Crafting in GW2 is very disappointing, meaningless, and not fun because:

—no makers mark (name of crafter) on the armour/weapons.
—no way to even view a players armour.
—the items you craft are not worth the time it takes to gather the resources, profif-wise.
—the items you craft are not superior enough in function.

I was hoping GW2 crafting would at least be as fun as some of the 15+ year old games. But its very downgraded.

Why didn’t GW2 make a game with excellent crafting? Beautiful graphics and a fun questing system are good, but there needs to be more FUN things to do in an online game.

Tell me about it. It was horrible trying to get the last 20 points in jewelry. It was really bad because out of all of the disciplines they decided jewelry needed globs of ectoplasm for their rares REALLY? globs in only one profession? yeah…not good.

Then they decided to separate the bags between different disciplines. Weird I thought they all could make gear and crafters bags for gathering/farming. But as a lw nope.

And then they didn’t make it a smart interface so that I could tell to buy the mats from the vendor to make the items or make the precursor item from the selection of the whole item I’m about to make (like make 1 dowel 1 malign dowel 1 pistol frame and 1 pistol barrel right there from the malign pistol selection window).

It’s quite weird that no one noticed these things.

For balance there are some things I definitely appreciate. Fast resource making when you have to make multiples, gone are the days of starting to make planks and walking to the kitchen making a three course meal watching a movie and coming back and it’s still not done. Also, I appreciate them adding a regular bag to multiple disciplines.

I don’t see anything that makes crafting fun in any game, unless it actually allows you to make gear or items you can use before you could earn the gold to buy them or farm them yourself.

Crafting in this game is actually a good way to make gold if you are clever and watch markets or even willing to gamble a bit.

I love the crafting, Master Crafter will be the only title I ever display.
Grinding is doing a repetitive task over and over that is not fun.
Just because you need X Karma and X Gold to get something doesn’t mean it’s grind. It’s only grind if you do the same thing over and over again to get X Karma and X Gold.

I agree, I like the crafting and have them all at 400.

It’s not as deep as I would like, but you really can’t have a perfect crafting system in a theme-park MMO, to be honest. To really have a grand crafting system you’d need to be able to run your own shop, etc., like in the sandboxes(UO, etc.).

I do wish the discovery system would be upgraded in future patches, so that you can actually create stuff, etc. It just needs more mix and match, and less discover something once and you are set for life. I think the Mystic Forge adds a bit of variability, which is nice, but not quite the same thing.

And, the name of the crafter on the items would be nice. Ugh, in this game… why is everything so anonymous? I hate how everyone is nameless in basically all modes of the game(crafting, pvp, etc.).

I don’t know why people say crafting is useless in this game, though, because the quality of items is basically as good as anything else, and you can make a large profit off crafted items in the TP, really.

In Horizons (now Istaria), crafters can not only make the usual weapons, potions, and food, but also spells and buildings. During some events, even portals or bridges. The crafts allows you to tailor your weapons, armor and jewelry much like this system, except that at the higher levels, you choose not one but three ways to tailor, giving a much wider of variety. The spell customizing shines, though; you can add range, accuracy, damage, crit damage, or some special effect depending on the school of spell (e.g. stun, slow, dot, etc).

I doubt you’ll see anything like it here, since it’d be hell to balance for PvP.

—the items you craft are not worth the time it takes to gather the resources, profif-wise.
—the items you craft are not superior enough in function.

Plus more pointless whining…

I would argue that wearing crafted armor or using crafted weapons that had some random persons name permenently attached to it is not only pointless, but a detraction from buying crafted goods on the market.

Can’t view armor? I don’t get it. I can view my armor, what are you missing?

Crafting wasn’t meant to be profitable. It’s a convenience and a way to round out your character if you so choose. It’s an optional activity.

With the exception of Legendaries and Ascended items that are made using the mystic forge, the items you craft are among the best in the game. You have heard of exotics right? A majority of all the different stat combinations that all of the classes use are available through crafting. So that last point makes absolutely no sense.

This is either someone who has barely even scratched the surface of crafting, and is disappointed they aren’t being handed god-like weapons and armor or bags of gold from the TP, or this is just trolling. Can’t figure out which is more accurate.

Since the OP hasn’t responded to thier own thread in the past day, I’m going with the latter.

To answer some of the questions: I have maxed a craft skill: cooking:

But i do not craft anything to sell, because selling the matts required would give me more profit than the actual selling price of the finished product.

By the time it takes to fight mobs every step of the way gathering… i’ve already made more money than i could hope for in the finished product.

So basically, crafting in this game is not even as good as “old school” crafting. I was hoping the crafting in GW2 would evolve into even more crafting fun, but instead has turned crafting into something weriod.

Crafting in GW2 is for leveling to 80, and getting your legendary.

Didn’t read all the replies, but I thought I’d add my 2 cents. I have never enjoyed crafting more than in this game. Sure its not a big money makers, but it does give me 10 levels of experience! and for pretty cheap too; 1 maybe 2 gold if I dont sell all my crafting materials. (which I dont since its so nice and easy to just put them in the bank with the deposit all button). Oh, and its awesome how I can make gear that is level appropriate. You could never do this in Wow. Crafted gear was always inferior, or freaking expensive. In wow you needed to get two professions up to max if you wanted to maximize your play experience but it was so freakishly boring because you had to do it at max level basically. It was just too expensive. I stopped even trying to level my crafting professions after a while. Here, in GW2, I don’t need to craft at all. I can get all my crafting needs from the TP, but I do it anyways because its fun and lots of xp.

IF just we was able to craft named stuff, with particular look, would have been the most worthy thing of this game. Sadly , is just a grind , useless waste of time and mats, be a 400. Expecially if you don’t have a precursor to work for.

By the time it takes to fight mobs every step of the way gathering… i’ve already made more money than i could hope for in the finished product. <snip>

So basically, crafting in this game is not even as good as “old school” crafting.

Just yesterday, I started huntsman on one of my characters, with an eye towards getting a legendary. My experience has been that you could make money crafting, without doing any gathering, so I though I would put it to the test. I gave my character 50 silver, a jug of karma, and lots of bag space. No gathered materials at all. The karma is reserved for buying the rare recipes from master trainers.

So far, I’ve gotten through the least profitable part, the bronze tier. My character has 64 silver, so I’ve managed to make a small profit, just on ordinary blue and green stuff, and parts. Anyone else, yesterday, could have done the same.

Yes, it takes some effort. You have to compare prices, and choose between buying raw materials, refined materials, and components. With the finished product, you have to choose between selling on the TP, to the vendor, or salvaging. Sometimes, you have to wait for your offers to be filled. Or for a lower-priced item so sell, before yours does. You sometimes have to reprice offers to buy or (taking the 5% loss) sell.

Yesterday, I made money by manufacturing one part, by making and selling blue and green weapons entirely from bought parts, and gasp selling green items to the vendor (no kidding!). Yes, I was actually able to turn a profit vendoring green items. Between all those, I went from 0 to over 75 (86, actually).

Is it worth it? Compared to the alternative of farming in Orr, definitely not. Once I can make rare items (at craft level 125), it will get more worthwhile, though still not as profitable as Orr farming. But if you enjoy figuring out the puzzle of where you can make a profit, it’s good fun. I personally get satisfaction from beating the system. If you don’t, and you just want to button-mash and Make Money Fast, then crafting isn’t for you.

File it with those jumping puzzles, look elsewhere for your fun, and leave crafting to those of us who enjoy the effort.

P.S. I agree that it would be better if we could look closely at others’ armor, at least in cities, and if there were a maker’s mark or at least initials and guild. It would also be nice if we could customize the dyes on armor we make, and sell dyed armor.

Having the name of the crafter on items should only be used on soulbound, account bound items. As much as you would like to see your name on a bunch of stuff people are using, there’s a greater amount of players who don’t really want this. No one wants to wear an item with a crafters name on it like XxPotsmokerdudeXx … well you get the idea. I personally wouldn’t purchase any items in the TP with another player’s name permanently attached to it.

I found cooking to be really fun. The recipes aren’t as internally consistent as the recipes in the other crafts and there are more combinations and layers of ingredients. There were plenty of times when I put three ingredients into the discovery boxes and needed one more that I wasn’t sure about…I found that to be quite fun.

Lots of erroneous statements here, like everywhere on these forums.
- Crafting is probably the easiest way to gain XP.
- Crafting your own stuff is useful, for example to make your own Magic Find armour set or to perfect your build with the appropriate runes/jewels.
- You can make money with crafting. No every craft isn’t profitable, but some are. You just need to understand the market.

If you think that crafting isn’t fun, I won’t stop you from doing something else.
If you think that you can’t get rich in crafting, I won’t stop you from doing something else.
If you think crafting is hard, I won’t stop you from doing something else.

Guild Wars 2 is a game. It has many and varied aspects. Just as there are correct and incorrect approaches to working in a dungeon, there are correct and incorrect approaches to crafting, but you are forced to participate in neither. If it’s not your thing, so be it. Look for another aspect of the game that calls to you.

You may have issues with crafting, lisamee, I have issues with dungeons. They are hard, unprofitable (what with all that armor repair) and un-fun (armor doesn’t break when things go well). But that’s my cross to bear and I won’t lay it on your shoulders or demand that things be done for them. Dungeon’s just arn’t my thing. It sounds like crafting isn’t yours. So be it.

“Crafting is not profitable, but…”

Should be even on low lvl, but it’s not. You can buy bag or craft it buying rune of holding and gathering/buying resources. Amount is similar, if you already have resources – yes, you can earn few silver, but… oh wait, paying fee/tax and you earn almost nothing! Scraps? You refine them, but price on trade market is the same, so even refinement doesn’t work. Why bother then? Armors? Come on! Rares and exotics demand from player super-rare and super-amount of mats. You need lot of farming to gather them or buy it, ok… so why bother in crafting, can buy it now.

But… if you gather everything around you if you have new character you can get lot of exp and let’s say for cooking, which is probably most profitable for your own good – you have free potions and boosts. Cool!

But#2… if you want money you should sell ALL mats you gather. Easiest way imo is farming Centarus in WvW, cuz they’re dropping Heavy Supply Bag (4s each) and they drop it pretty often, so in hour I would dare to say you can earn around 1G just from those bags, not to mention other loot. It’s sad that PvE standard area can’t give you that (for instance best tier crafting gossamer can’t be earn other way than 100% map completion high level areas or… WvW).

It’s my opinion, and I’m not even playing 2 months, so I may be wrong, just my view after few weeks of playing.

Summary

Craft is fun in some ways but by all means not profitable as it should be, would dare to say not profitable at all if you’re not 400lvl and have tons of super-rare mats from wasting time on farming them. Why we have to buy spools and runes of holding? If I’m good at crafting and someone’s not, why he has more money from selling mats than mine refinement, investment in crafting tools and time. No crafting=more money, period. Unless you’re chief which can produce nice boosts.

what bugs me about crafting is it just takes so many materials and by the time you can gather those materials the gear it can make is often outdated to your character or you’ve already found alternatives to the gear you wanted to make.

In addition for all the weapon skins in the game, the crafting lacks a huge amount of variety in the looks of what you are crafting, would it hurt to use some of the skins from mobs and npcs and throw it into the crafting system? does every greatsword have to look exactly the same from crafting level 50 to crafting 300+?

I do kind of wish there was more soulbound things we could make with crafting, to give me more of a reason to craft. I wouldn’t want anything that gives a boost over other players, but more items like the furniture or plant tonics that artificers can make.
