Q:
Crazy imbalance on timegated mats: why?
Good luck getting any answer on this forum, from a Dev at least.
Silk was near vendor price before this was introduced. They wanted to boost its worth and overkilled it. Now why they don’t reduce the cost to 50 silk bolts that’s beyond normal people’s logic. This has been complained about ever since silk hit 2s+ and we haven’t gotten a single answer from a dev yet. So yea they’re basically saying to suck it up.

They’re either not willing to revert changes like this once they’re made for fear of “angering” people who paid the higher price before ("WHAT?! It now only costs 50 silk? But I made 3 sets of Ascended gear when it was 100!!!! NOT FAIR!) or they’re simply clueless and / or stubborn.
Seems once a crafting material goes up it never comes back down. Soft Wood still takes 4 logs to make a plank compared to the 3 logs everything else takes and that was changed a loooong time ago.
If they made any changes it would be to push the other materials up to 100 per, not the other way around.
The whole point of these recipes is to sink large amounts of materials, they aren’t supposed to be dirt cheap.

the same price as mithril would not be dirt cheap it would be balanced.
Edit: Just to clarify, the reason they were dirt cheap before was because there was nothing to use them on before. They were only a way to get to max crafting level so they deserved to be cheap. Then they made ascended gear and it gave them a use. So there really was not any reason to change anything else as that simple fact alone would have made the cost go up since it is used in more ascended armor recipes than any other material.
Anet knew this and they also knew what increasing the refinement cost would do and what making the damask recipe cost so much would do. They are smart people so they knew. So they want things this way even if it is completely unbalanced and unfair(light armor classes punished for being light armor).

Well pure logic dictates that it should be the other way around (100, or even 150x Mithril (takes less to craft ingots, needed in less crafts, a lot easier to obtain) vs. 25x Silk (remember: needed for all armocrafting AND insignia) and 50x Leather – btw. Elonian Leather being the only one correctly balanced). Overly abundant Mithril wouldn’t clog inventories and Damask wouldn’t cost 3-7x times the other ascended mats do, being the most required element in the same time.
Would REALLY like a developer to explain/comment.

Sloppy, amateur design. Simple as that. GW2 is a great game and looks amazing, but don’t be fooled. Development struggles with the simplest of things like tooltip errors. Balancing a complex economy is way out of their league.
They probably made some calculations based on a singe value like drop rates or costs in the trading post, completely ignoring the reality of the game, the gameplay in practice.
On top of that, instead having a daily craft, there should be a daily cuota that gets added every day you log in, so if you log in 30 days, you can craft 30 in one go after you get the materials, instead having to craft everyday. But as it is, if you didn’t have the materials one day, you miss out you daily cuota.
The absurdity.
