Ok i was merrily and happily ignoring ascended crafting because i really feel it’s not required for me to do everything i like in the game. Then BAM i get a chest drop. First truly “lucky” drop for me. So i decided to make a new thief class to use ascended gear. My question is …if i’m going to craft a full gambit of ascended stuff for my thief is there any particular craft i should focus on or will i need to get them all to 500? I haven’t played a medium armor class yet so i just don’t know. I would like to use the crafting to level her up so i need to know whar direction to take before i start.

If you want everything Ascended you will need a Leatherworking for your armor and Weaponsmith for your weapons, if you use a pistol you will also need Huntsman.

Ascended armor has almost no stat advantage over exotics. The real advantage is that ascended stuff can be infused with agony resistance, which is needed for fractals. And if you do fractals, you will likely have more ascended drops later on.

Ascended trinkets are what makes the real stat difference. Check the stats on Wiki / Dulfy. Ascended trinkets can be bought from laurel vendors.

So you don’t really need to craft it yourself.

cmon you cant say they dont make a difference, it might only be 2% but its still a difference, even when you get the plus +5 toughness on each piece

There is a difference in stats, but for having crafted a full ascended gear you don’t see any difference in game while you play. I saw a difference when i upgraded my trinkets from exotic to ascended, but for the armor nothing. I have maxed crafting to 500 on all 3 weapons profession, and 1 armor professions, but for now i only crafted 1 weapons and 1 set of armor and don’t plan of doing more. Simply because its not really worth it. I’ll probably eventually craft a second ascended armor for my main when i reach 1500 dragonite ore again and its only because i enjoy doing the World Boss Train once in a while so i accumulate Dragonite at a good rate.

Hmmm… thanks for all the feedback. I do not do fractals. I do spend quite a lot of time in WvW, but my PvP “abilities” are such that ascended armor wouldn’t really help, because let’s face it – if you don’t PvP and you come across a good PvP player, an extra bunch % of anything isn’t worth beans.

Maybe I should just use regular crafting to 400 to level up the thief and leave it at the 1 piece of ascended that dropped, and go for trinkets. I also don’t really want to spend hundreds of gold on increasing crafting from 400-500, because I’m trying to make a 2nd legendary weapon.

Ozmaniandevil you do the good thing there. Too many people just end up crying over ascended because they can’t live without it, but can’t or don’t want to craft it. Myself I did 1 set of armor for my Main for the Agony Resistance (and until the next fractal update that will bring the max level to 60-70, this AR is useless to me). I spend most of my time in WvW and I’m not pushing for a second ascended armor for WvW, i prefer to spend my gold on a lot of other things right now and i don’t feel disadvantage at all.

Second point. Its really not that expensive to level up to 500 in crafting. (At least for the 3 weapons profession and Armorsmith). The major costly part in that are the Orichalcum/Ancient Wood and these can be gather. If you have several alts you can leave them in a particular place (Orr or Frostgorges Sound) and check on gw2nodes to see which server have the best nodes placements so you can run all your alts everydays. Now i don’t really need Ori/Wood anymore, but until recently i use to make almost 50 of each everyday for a run of 10-15min max. Of course i had 7 level 80, but several new players in my guild with only 1 or 2 level 80 where able to gather about 30 of each in about 30min per character using this method. The only different is that they run more maps and nodes with less characters (so they need to run between nodes more that I do). But still with 1 character you can do this for about 30min per day for a month and get to 500 in a crafting profession. With 2 level 80 you can cut the time by half.

The point of ascended weapon and armor is not the stats they give, it is the weapon damage and the armors they add.

ascended weapon does 5% more weapon damage that the exotic ones, with how the damage is calculated that actually equals to 5% “overall” damage increase. To put that into raw stats, if you have 2000 power, a 5% weapon dam increase would roughly equals 100 power increase in addition to the 5% stats increase. That’s a lot.

ascended armors also adds 5% defense, each 1 defense = 1 toughness, that’s a pretty good stats increase.

I just finish crafting a set of ascended armors, and let me tell you they are expensive. The main reason is Bolts of Damask. Even for heavy armor, it requires 25 Bolts of Damasks and each one costs 14 gold. I don’t see these Damasks comes down in price either, as the cloth required are really really hard to farm.

I would say focus on the trinkets and weapons. They make the most impact and are much cheaper.
