I finished my 3rd piece today and that’s enough of that! Or so I thought.

As I was making the vision crystal to finish off Zojja’s Artifact and it occurred to me that I had collected 1500 of each the bloodstone, dragonite and empyreal mats. Then I had a real wake up moment.

Anet will 99% likely reuse that mechanism for crafting armor, and there are 6 pieces per set, or 3k basic mats needed. If you want celestial ascended armor you’ll likely need at least 30 charged quartz too.

Don’t stop farming now boys and gorillas. We’re not even close to finish line.

You think that will be bad?

http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Elonian_Leather_Square

Now look at Bolt of Damask, and start thinking about how that recipe will look like:

  • 50 Bolt of Silk = 100 Silk Scrap
  • 1 Glob of Ectoplasm
  • 10 Thermocatalytic Reagent
  • 20 Bolt of Wool = 40 Wool Scrap
  • 10 Bolt of Cotton = 20 Cotton Scrap
  • 20 Bolt of Linen = 40 Linen Scrap

The Insignia will probably require 3 Bolt of Damask, just like Deldrimor Steel Dowels.
And then we take a look at how many Deldrimor Steel Ingots we need for an ascended weapon.
It is basically the same amount as we need Orichalcum Ingots for exotics.
So a set of Cloth:

  • 1 for Damask Coat Lining
  • 4 for Damask Coat Panel
  • 2 for Damask Epaulet Padding
  • 1 for Damask Gloves Padding
  • 1 for Damask Gloves Panel
  • 1 for Damask Helm Padding
  • 1 for Damask Helm Strap
  • 1 for Damask Pants Lining
  • 4 for Damask Pants Panel
  • 2 for Damask Shoe Upper
  • Total: 18 for a set the parts + 6*3 [ 18 ] for the insignias = 36 Bolt of Damask

36 Bolt of Damask mats:

  • 36*50 Bolt of Silk = 3600 Silk Scrap
  • 36 Globs of Ectoplasm
  • 360 Thermocatalytic Reagent
  • 36*20 Bolt of Wool = 1440 Wool Scrap
  • 36*10 Bolt of Cotton = 720 Cotton Scrap
  • 36*20 Bolt of Linen = 1440 Linen Scrap

Good luck farming these materials, as you will mostly get high level materials with a level 80 character.
So most of the time you will get Gossamer and Silk, the lower level mats are basically unfarmable.

This is what I fear it will look like.

I agree with your estimations. I recently did my main’s tailoring in anticipation of this causing price spikes but I only had to buy a few mats because I recently leveled a character and purposefully stagnated in the level ranges of the most expensive mats so they dropped more readily.

I believe the driving force behind these ascended tier recipes and methods of attaining all the other ascended items is to require high levels to communicate with lower levels as a method of keeping lower level zones active, which is healthy for the game as a whole, its also a method of wealth distribution since low level characters don’t typically farm dungeons or have access to as many lucrative world events.

Ow. O.o

I’ll probably just skip the armor and slowly work on my weapons. With 8 level 80s and full or almost full sets of weapons on each, this alone should keep me mindlessly occupied for years. If I’m still playing the game at that point, I’ll look into armor.

I believe their issue is more with the fact that if an 80 goes to a lower level zone to try to farm linen you end up getting cloth from salvages because the gear still drops as lvl 80.

Pretty much a useless post — nobody said anything close to that. Honestly I’m surprised you didn’t launch into an “entitled” argument.

This topic is really a lament on the perceived effort for crafting ascended armor — essential ascended weapon x6. Don’t derail it just to float your ego.

You forgot to count all the stuff you need to level your craft to 500 too.

The day I reached 500 in my first craft has been the day I had been sure, never to do ascended armor. Leveling 400-500 needs silly grinding as it is now. And we even don’t have any nodes for wool and leather. But I will wait some days, and sell all the stuff I stockpile for it and buy myself nice other gear in the game. There will be new legendary stuff soon too. More money might be a good choice for that too

Bear in mind they said that the weapon ascended mats will only be a portion of what’s needed for armor. I bet that they will add another time-gated material to thwart anyone stockpiling ascended mats in preparation.

You’re better served by stockpiling mats that will assist you in getting 500 in whatever armor craft you use, such as:

- T6 mats such as gossamer scraps, orichalcum ore (this will possibly spike again in price) and hardened leather sections.
- Ectos
- T6 fine materials such as powerful bloods etc.

One can speculate that they will reuse the current recipe setup that weapons use, i.e. the lower level tiers of mats specific to your craft, so you might want to grab some stacks of those while they are dirt cheap.

Ancient wood barely broke 1s before the patch, and now it’s 8-9s. I’m betting that gossamer will be the one that really jumps in price, since the T6 leather and metal are far more abundant, and gossamer has a lower drop rate by far.

All speculation atm, but with lower tier mats going on the cheap, now is the time to stockpile, while there is a ton of time to do so.

I did this already in the first days after ascended weapon crafting came around because its way cheaper to craft your ascended mats and weapon in the end compared the cost of mats to level your craft to 500 once, the prices spike.

Unfortunately, i only play heavy class, so i gotta wait until the ore prices went down a bit to stock up again. But i will still make alot of gold, selling all my cloth and leather.

For those that are asking for extra gathering nodes for cloth and leather, those are the most common drops from lootbags.

On the other hand with time gated mechanics it will not be impossible to farm/buy all needed mats on time when they are needed.

Cotton is a major pain in the kitten to get. Even with the relatively lower amounts needed that stuff is going to shoot up in price.

Unlike with wood/metal you can’t just go to some cotton plant and gather it. You would need to farm mobs for quite a while to get the salvage items for it for you to go craft an ascended piece. No one is going to go do that.

On the other hand we do have a lot of people salvaging right now to increase their MF. Unfortunately no 80 can just go to the appropriately leveled zone to farm that level of gear to salvage (it’ll give me level 80 stuffs).

You can get cloth from some bags as well… but it’s hardly a reliable method.

I would stock up now unless you expect them to put in an event that yields a lot of lower->mid level cloth.

You had the brains to figure out which materials you’ll need but you lack the insight of preparing exactly what you need at rock bottom prices? Weird.

I’m the original poster here and I can assure you that I did not go through this bit of mental gymnastics just to ignore my own conclusions, that have been confirmed by others here. I’m just a little disappointed at the shear mass of materials needed for this, and the stupid amount of time that will be needed for farming mats that cannot be bought.

This game was not supposed to be about gear grind and farming.

Anet sold out and casual gamers are screwed. They will not be able to keep up.

Funny part: nobody has done the math for ascended jewelry which is coming too.

Jewelry is going to be funny bird because we can get some of the Ascended gear by other means that are also time gated and imo are not at all reasonable. I want an Ascended back piece dammit! (and I hate the Fractals). Time gated guild missions anyone?

What ever happened to playing this game the way I want to play? That was a part of the promise that sold me this game.

Anyway, we have a crafting slot item for “Electrum” which actually exists in the real world. It’s a blend of silver and gold and those will probably be time gated items that are fused using thermocatalytic gold sink mats from the NPC. This will likely be the material that we use to make bands, hooks, settings and filigrees.

Time gates again. The Anet development process has gotten pretty predictable. Where is the outrage? Gone, because only the fanbois are left.

As for the gems used in Ascended jewelry those mats will likely be fused too, or perhaps you will just need large numbers of them, in the same style as the Triforge Pendant.

Cooking anyone? Or a different game?

There are plenty of “casual” players who are very good at this stuff and would love to have rewarding content that could be completed in a couple of hours play time, per week, because that’s all the play time they have.

As things stand now, unless you can support Anet in their quest for daily login numbers, you’re screwed right out of the best gear the game.

Yes with about 100 bags and it was about 1/10. If you’re just going for cloth that’s about 1/20… so about 5%. Small sample size though so that could be off due to the nature of RNG. Farming up even 100 bags would take a while (especially compared to how long it takes you to farm up 100 wood/metal), so that’s another reason why I don’t think it’s a good method. I thought time gated tokens was bad (Pristine Relics, Laurels, Guild Commendations). Crafting is an abomination. So much grind, so many resources, so much tedious sitting at a crafting table going through inane discovery design to grind something useless and arbitrary just so that I can waste even more of my resources to bypass the artificial gate that is levelling from 400-500 before I can begin throwing even more resources away.

At least the token system focused on content to acquire items, this new system is just multiple layers of grind and hoops to jump through. Ascended crafting is the worst addition to the game since launch. If you love the TP and sitting at a crafting table it’s great, if you like actually playing the game outside of the city it’s awful. The worst part is, you don’t have a choice if you want the best gear.

Well we saw a lot of fail game for some reasons. Didn’t we ?

First don’t get me wrong I love this game!

We have already broken The Manifesto in our hands with a lot of broken promises so just calm down for now and wait what will happen. Wait for Arena.Net’s and NCSoft’s move for it.

Good things still can happen. Like more drop and gather rate.

So if this game force us to do something really bored we can move on the next game so simple is that.

If things go wrong as they sometimes will, we can find next game as always!

Why not! Look around, good games coming already.

And don’t tell me people will never move to next game.. Yes maybe a few will continue to play but majority not.

I dont farm the bags myself but get them from the TP. In this case, i got them to research Silver doubloon droprates and the profitability of opening those lootbags (which of course relies on the market value of the various items on the loot table).

Silver Doubloons rose quite a bit in price over the last month und subsequently also pebbles, nuggets and lumps, while t2 fine crafting mats nearly lost 100% value in the same time span.

A month ago, i nearly made 100% profit on the 40k lootbags i opened, this time it wasnt nearly as much and i wouldnt consider it a good profit per hour (of clicking).

However, doing this kind of research for myself gives me an advantage over others, once the values of the items on the loot table rise again, i know what kind of profit i can expect at the actual price of the bags.

Yea thanks for popping all of them, it gave me more info ^^. I was looking at the current possible ways to reliably farm cloth… and so far I havn’t come up with any good ways to get what we would need on a daily basis for the ascended mats. Unless they introduce something… the price on these cloths is going to skyrocket when they are in high demand and the supply isn’t increased. I have multiple alts filled with these cloths atm btw (I obviously didn’t farm it though lol).

Am I the only that isnt put off by this in the slightest?

I dont consider the pressure for max stats in to be huge enough to whine preemptively about assumptions. WvW is inherently unbalanced and you’re more often losing or winning based on the situation that wouldnt be changed with 10% more or less stats, and all known PvE has been beaten repeatedly so there is no requirements for ascended armor there either.

Based on that opinion, I welcome a long-term goal with nice intermediate pay-offs (finishing each part of the armor), because that IS something this game sorely lacks.

I hope ascended armor follows the patterns set forth by the weapons to comply with my symmetry ocd. It’s bad enough I cant equip two of the same ascended rings.

So WvW already being imbalanced is a good reason for not needing to get 10% more stats when they are available how?

With that kind of logic, giving Eng’s an orbital ion cannon in WvW is fine. It’s already imbalanced so making it more so is no big deal! That’s just poor reasoning.

As far as the rings you can get the same stats just not the same item (only the infusion slots will be different). Sorry that bugs you through : /

Yea I got different rings, it’s not really a problem gamewise but when you OCD you gotta OCD =P

As far as the 10% goes I wanted to emphasize that there is a list of actual, current problems with WvW and that worrying about a potential stat imbalance and the cost to “catch up” to the early adapters is just a bit premature.

I think something people are potentially discounting in this thread is that ascended armor, most likely, WILL NOT ONLY COME FROM CRAFTING/DROPS. I’m willing to bet it will be available other ways (fractal relics, WvW, maybe even laurels/karma.) In fact, I think Anet would be insane if it were done like weapons…crafting will be one of several options, not the only one.

I see it far more as they will be making the imbalance worse… so I should hurry and get it so that I’ll be more on par with the other people. It’s another imbalance factor that I’ll have to deal with and I really don’t like that.

At the same time though I don’t like sPvP. We’ll see what happens when they put in custom 5v5 deathmatches though.

The question is will the new armor skins be cool?

I think you’re looking at ratios all wrong here….
For weapons, it’s generally ALWAYS been a 5-1 ratio of the Node mats.
Compare the two by looking at Inscription VS. Insignia.

  • Lots of logs & ore compressed into Dowels … 2 dowels if Rare, 5 if Exotic
  • a single bolt of Fabric = Insignia.

which one uses more resources currently? … As you get higher into the crafting levels, it’s obviously the Weapons that use the most raw resources. 50 mithril + 120 iron & platinum per Deld Ingot? … It only makes sense that it uses 5 bricks of Dragonite & Empy shards too. And yeah, if you’re a huntsmen then you know we already have the recipe for Elonian Leather. But that doesn’t mean that’s the complete recipe for an Insignia. Expecting everyone to get 60 darkmatter & 30 empyeal bricks for instance for a full armor set, is just insane. …. 30 bloodstone bricks and maybe 30 Darkmatters is reasonable. …but 3000 empyr shards is just ridiculous (even though I can easilly get 200 a day in 2 hours of jp’ing)

I am both scared and excited at the thoughts of how the ascended armor (more specifically the leather) will look lol.

We also will use the same ratio in recipe for the metal (will be used in armorsmithing). Weapons and armor both take the same number of globs. I don’t see why it would all of a sudden be different for ascended tailoring.

Actually a higher weapon tier does favour raw damage over condition damage. Weapon strength increase also counts.

Not imbalanced because of stats and it won’t favor a server? You seen what bloodlust does to a GvG? Ok… now take that and apply it to an entire server. Stats matter regardless if you solo roam most of the time (like me) or do large zerg clashes. Upleveled players are far worse off even if they have their main utilities/traits… because of stats… It’ll get even more noticeable when ascended armor in as well.
