..or was I just really unlucky, twice?

After stocking up on potatoes the past few weeks I decided to craft some brown dyes (cooking profession). Since it takes 100 nutmeg per vial now since the nerf, I only had 250 units in storage, thus enough to create only two vials of unidentified brown dye.

After removing the remaining 50 nutmeg from storage to my bag, I revealed both dyes and they turned out to both be “Far Mountain Dye”.

I thought that was bit unlucky (as there are so many variations of brown available). So, I switched characters to one that I have spare karma on (who is parked next to the nutmeg vendor), purchased another 250 nutmeg, and deposited it. I switched back to my cook and, now that I had 250+50 nutmeg to work with, proceeded to create 3 more unidentified brown dyes.

Once revealed, all three of them ended up being “Khaki Dye”.

Now, I’ve made quite a few brown dyes in the prior weeks and have never had that happen before. However, since the patch it seems like every time I create a set of dyes, upon inspecting them they all turn out to be the same color. Or maybe I just got unlucky, twice. Seemed odd enough to ask about, though.

I’d like to do more tests, but potatoes take a while to stock up and I don’t really feel like wasting anymore of them if a dye/crafting bug was recently introduced.

Did you /bug it? It does seem odd and it’s expensive for players to verify. The devs would have an easier time determining if it’s just a streak of bad luck or if something is wonky. We have a pretty prolific dye crafter in our guild. I’ll ask him if he’s noticed anything.

And, please, update this thread – for chefs, our only real money-making options are dyes and Omnomberry Bars, as pretty much every other foodstuff is on TP for a few copper each.

All I can add is that those screenshots are from today, post last night’s patch. If anyone else has tried crafting several of the same type of dye (e.g. brown common) today, and then identified them one after the other and revealed the exact same dye each time.. I’d love to know as well.

I tend to believe (from the results I posted) there is a bug at work there, perhaps in the manufacturing of the dye, perhaps in the identifying (as I’m not really sure when the color of a dye is actually determined), perhaps in the fact that I identified 3 dyes in less than 5 seconds.. who knows.

It may even be something that can be reproduced and manipulated. I’m sure the wheels have already started turning on some exploiting mind out there somewhere, which is why I’m kind of surprised a developer hasn’t looked at those screenshots and checked into this.

Or, it was just dumb luck and I should have played the lotto today.

There are 49 brown dyes of which only 27 are common, so the odds of your first dye matching your second are 1:27 for the Far Mountain example. And 1:729 in your Khaki dye production. Given how many players in the game opening unID dyes, someone is bound to see some lucky/unlucky combinations, i.e. it’s not entirely crazy that you had bad luck here.

However, I do agree it’s worth calling this to their attention: easy for them to test and verify if it’s an issue or not.

According to several posts from ANet, the random roll for opening stuff happens when you open it. I believe they specifically mentioned Black Lion Chests, salvaging, and the standard unID dye (I don’t remember seeing them mention crafted dyes, but those should work the same). In other words, if there’s an issue, it’s probably happening when you double-click, not when you create the dye.

Why do you think they haven’t looked into this? They don’t respond to every post; in fact, they respond to relatively few posts. If there’s an issue, it’s exploitable and I’m sure they would like to fix it before confirming it, and thus allowing people to take advantage of it.

I think I have enough mats to craft a few unID dyes, so I might try my own lotto and see if I can duplicate your results.

I couldn’t replicate your results.

I tried this with the unidentified yellow dye (master) that can drop common, uncommon, or rare. I crafted two (all I had the mats for) and ended up with two different dyes, one uncommon and one common.

One thing you didn’t mention was whether you split the stack or not. I did (because I’m afraid of accidentally clicking too many times)

So then I tried with unID orange (plain) (common only), since I happened to have a lot of the mats for that. This time I didn’t separate the stack. I ended up with two different common dyes.
