There’s a list of beautiful weapons on the wiki, that can be forged in the mystic forge. Many of them seem to be a very good alternative to legendaries, many are very, very expensive. I’d love to go for Ilya+Mad Moon on my engineer. There’s just one huge problem…….

I can’t, for any good reason, go for this horizontal progression. If I don’t go for legendary or ascended weapons, sooner or later I will start lagging behind on the gear curve. Yes, at the moment it’s shallow, but at least a legendary will keep its relative power.

Why is this a problem? I’m a time limited player. I can only afford one of those weapons before summer, and if I don’t go for the legendary, I will regret it one of the future patches. I sincerely need this legendary just to beat the incoming threadmill. I hate the prospect of this happening. For all the cool skins implemented in the last patches, I will get none. It makes the GW1 fan in me cry.

Please fix this. All skin weapons need ascended status or they’re just worthless to normal players.

If only I had the time to grind out two weapons. As I stated, just farming one is already a big deal for me.

There’s nothing wrong with working slowly towards a weapon you want. I started working on my legendary last month and it would probably take another 6 months before I’m finished at the rate I’m going. I don’t mind taking so long because I don’t need it now so I won’t be hardcore grinding to get it. I’m only doing stuff when I feel like it.

There is no need for acended or legendary weapons at this juncture. None. And anyone who tells you other wise is lying.

For ages my level 80 char had level 75 armor and weapons and I have done it all – fractals, dungeons, WvW, the whole story quest, and never found this to be limiting. What it did allow me to do is save up for the weapons and armor I really wanted.

In the mean time there’s plenty of ways to obtain items with passable stats for cheap until you can get your target items – I suggest dungeons and the karma merchants in Orr for obtaining the stats you want, then transmute, transmute, transmute if you don’t like the look of them.

There is no race. And not having nifty things is not stopping you from being competitive in the least. How you play is a far bigger issue than what you play with.

losses remain within acceptable parameters.

Which is exactly what I’m doing, but going for a mere skin would give me a big setback on the upcoming power increase. Feels like wasted time in advance. This was so different in GW1. Sad quaggan.

I would go for the skin.
Personally I could care less about upcoming power increase but I do care about skins, so for me it is a no brainer.
Since I refuse to spend my time in game doing something i dislike, I will never set foot in FoTM.

Just decide what is most important to you as a player and go for it.

btw there is no such thing as a mere skin, some of those are OMG what skin is that! :P

Sorry I was probably abit unclear in my response, at this juncture I would only pursue ledgendaries if they offer you the skin you want or you are willing to invest the time, the stat bonus is somewhat negligable unless you are the min/max kind of player

As a necro they offer me neither, because of this I plan on pursuing an exoctic skin and the transmuting it to ascended stats (which I imagine will become easier obtain in the future – pure speculation at this point because they don’t exist) provided I still prefer my exoctic skin over the ascended gear look

Speculating on Ascended Weapons, when they don’t exist even in the most obscure recesses of the database, is moot.

I suggest you just go for your preferred skin. By the time that eventually ascended weapons will be released, you will probably have means to get them much more easily than now. The game could change in a way or the other, so planning for a perceived “vertical progression” when it could be 1-2 year later, is overkill.

TLDR; Enjoy your game now. Go for the skin.

Ilya shares same skin with Chaos Gun, Quip’s precursor, which is currently going for less.

Go for the skin. I doubt ascended weapons will be out anytime soon. I don’t understand why people are even worrying about this right now.
I especially don’t understand why you’d be worrying when you apparently have very little time to play. Just go for the skin. That’s what GW is all about. Sure, legendaries will some day in the future be better than exotics, but really. Why even think about that now. Look cool first. Besides, if it’s going to take you that long to get whatever you want, you might have some notice about ascended weapons should they come sooner than expected. Then, you can just use whatever you’ve saved for whatever and possibly put it towards the legendary/ascended if you still care.
Another thing, I thought they said they might be releasing more legendaries at some time. So I’d suggest against going for a legendary you’re meh about and get what you love. Maybe someday they’ll release a legendary that you love just as much as Ilya. If so, go for that one.

While I’m working at getting lodestone for Infinite Light, I’m also slowly grinding out the 2 gisfts that are common to all Legendaries so I can be at least partway reeady if a new round ocomes out that have skins I want. I encourage you to focus on your chosen skin, but also chip away at the Legendary shared compnents.

I agree with the OP the thought of spending that much time and effort on an item that will be left behind by the BIS legendary/ascended weapons makes me cringe and not want to try for the skin I want.

We do have an Idea how much better the ascended weapons are to the exotic thanks to the short term flub by Anet when they accidentally released the legendary upgrades while not OMG OP! It is still a 5% increase in basic damage not even including the stats on the weapon. People are so fast to argue that the increase isn’t significant but I highly doubt those same people are running around in fine, masterwork, or even rare gear. the reason we upgrade for that 6, 10, or even 3 percent increase to our abilities is because that little bit adds up fast and we are overall better for it.

Now that we know that Legendary weapons are always going to be BIS there is almost no reason to go for anything else first. I hate the skins of almost every legendary but Anet has already said they plan to increase level cap, and continue the vertical progression. This means in time the legendary will pay for itself, you will never again have to grind out your weapon which is a truly important part of your gear.

So while the Flame Seeker Prophices may be easier and cheaper to make than the Eidolon of Nullification it is automatically better because of its legendary status. 3 expansions down the line Flame Seeker will remain BIS while you will constantly need to grind out a new shield and transmute the Eidolon over and over again. Or grind out both and transmute the Eidolon over the Flame seeker.

The problem IMHO is, if the mystic weapons are not supposed to be on par with the legendary weapons, then they need to cost a significant amount less. If getting my mystic weapons was on par with say a precursor then It wouldn’t be a big deal. But because the grind is nearly the same or sometimes more than a legendary. It feels like such a waste. I already had a hard time getting into the grind but this takes the cake for me. Either I grind for a weapon that will be left behind, or for a weapon that I don’t like the look of.

Edit
In case you were wondering OP, I did chose to go with getting the skin I wanted. but there is a very bitter taste in my mouth over the whole thing.
