Exotic vs Legendary Weapons
Bragging rights maybe? No, otherwise.

To Be Honest, I think Legendaries are there for if you have nothing to do. So it does have another good side keeps you playing for something. Of course this is just my opinion you may not need to finish everything before you try for one.
They are supposed to keep up with any increase in stats when expansions come out. This is often put forward like its a major selling point. (Shrug) Considering it costs hundreds of golds to get one, I don’t see any cost savings here but whatever makes them happy.
Prestige, bragging rights – down the road they will be on par with Ascended gear so if you’re into min/max, it’s required.
When I see someone equip a legendary, , I can safely say that for the most part you know your class, the game and some mechanics since you invested all that time to acquire one.

When I see someone else with a legendary, I know they were as bored as I was
Am I legendary yet!?

considering that ascended gear costs gold and ectos ie accessory are 50 ecto each if you cant get guild coms backpacks much more multiply that for having to upgrade to a new tier every year for the next decade or so, not counting the cost of also upgrading them to infused so they are BIS or the benefit of having a better weapon than others can even get for wvw etc for a few weeks or as long as it takes to earn the new currency for the new tier each time and it makes sense to upgrade now
some people also like the idea of bypassing the treadmill to remain competitive if they want to do multiplayer content in an mmo…

or they really like sitting in LA playing the TP or they had a thousand odd dollars to burn on some pixels

That assumes that when expansions come out, that there will be a brand new set of gear needed to grind for, or that there will be new gear each year (it wasn’t in Guild Wars 1 so it’s not a sure thing it will in Guild Wars 2) and that the new gear will be as horrendously expensive as ascended gear.
If they don’t have new gear each year/expansion or it isn’t so expensive, then it’s not cost effective. Particularly for the people who spent several hundred gold just on the precursor. I don’t know the average cost for a Legendary, but from reading the forums I wouldn’t be surprised if it ranged between 500 to 1000 gold. New armor would have to be ruinously expensive if that’s considered cost effective.

I used the quest as a way to explore the game. The quest required that do dungeons, go around the entire game world, try my hand at WvW (shock horror – I found I enjoy WvW a ton!), figure out crafting, and many other things. It became a grind towards the end but I’m glad I finished it.
Now that I’m done, the experience has triggered a whole new set of goals in the game for me. For example, I found that mesmers are cool in WvW and became interested in the class, and so am leveling one. I found I really like crafting, so am slowly working towards Master Crafter. And I even found I like Jumping Puzzles and so eventually look to complete all those as well.

Achievement points.
I think that the fact that they look BEAST make them worthwhile…
