GW2 : crafting feedback
I have five character with an exotic weapon and full exotic armor, each I crafted myself. I checked the prices of crafting vs buying from the Trading Post. I don’t remember how much gold I saved per item, but it was at least two. So a conservative estimate says I saved at least 70 gold. 70 gold in my pocket says to me crafting is not useless.
And that doesn’t even account for all the gold I’ve made crafting and selling items for a profit. So I’m going to have to disagree with you. I’m not saying it’s perfect; I think giving every character access to all eight crafting disciplines was a mistake. But even with its flaws, crafting is far from useless.
I wouldn’t say it’s useless. It’s just too tedious, time consuming and/or expensive to do while leveling up because you can acquire the same quality of gear faster and cheaper through other methods.
Crafting Fine and Masterwork gear, especially at lower levels, should be dead-easy since you can easily acquire this type of gear through drops and karma vendors. The amount of materials required and/or the drop rate of those materials should be lowered quite a bit. Rare and Exotic gear should still require substantially more materials since this is supposed to be the good stuff.
While leveling up, crafting was very disappointing and frustrating. I couldn’t acquire enough materials to craft gear appropriate for my level. Trying to farm the materials would cause me to level beyond the the gear I’m trying to craft (and I didn’t have enough materials for that next tier, so I’d farm more and fall even further behind). Or I’d blow all my money buying fine crafting materials to make gear that I’ll out level in short order (and that could be bought for a fraction of the price on the trading post). The only reason I stuck with it was out of stubborn tenacity of trying to keep my crafting level on par with my character level.
The real comedy is that sometimes you gain so much experience from refining raw materials and discovering recipes that you almost out level the gear you’re trying to craft through the very act of crafting it!
Once I hit 80, crafting started to become fun because vertical progression stopped and I now had a fixed target I was shooting for — first getting a Masterwork set, then working my way into a Rare and Exotic set. Finding Rares and Exotics as drops was still fun since it was better than my Masterwork gear, but I wanted to keep crafting so I could get the exact stats I wanted. It was a great progression.
Considering how quickly we level, it needs to be really easy to craft gear at the lower levels, then gradually ramp up to where it is now for level 80 Exotics. By no means should the good stuff be handed to us on a silver platter. But crafting should be something you can enjoy and benefit from during your leveling experience, not something that you put off and only start thinking about once you hit 80 (or if it is something you only think about once you hit 80, then just eliminate the lower tiers entirely and make it so you can only craft level 80 gear).
Crafting (besides Chef, perhaps) seems close to useless until you get to lvl 80, and then only if you have level your craft to 400.
I found out that there is just no profit to be done unless you farm tons and tons of materials, and by the time you have the material for the gear you want, you have already outleveled it.
The only things I found useful to craft before lvl 80 were Boxes, Jewerly (and then, only lvl 65 jewerly) and Food.
I think that if they let us craft lvl 400 stuff at any level, and remove every recipe that is not needed for the lvl 400 recipes, no one would notice, and no one would miss them (with a very few exceptions)
Crafting is fine.. the only thing I find absolutely stupid is I can craft things, place them in my normal bank slots to pass to alts or I can sell them on the trading post to sell to anyone, but try putting crafted items into guild bank and its a big no no.. utterly stupid!!
I would like crafting a lot more if they would at least make the weapons look different. Because a bronze sword and an iron sword should not be the same. And I doubt a steel shield would look like a wooden buckler

But a Wooden Sword does not look the same! At level 400 crafting, you get unique looks.
My 2c on crafting:
I dislike the fact that you can’t craft what you know unless you’re “aligned” to it. I KNOW HOW TO MAKE A MEAT STEW, DON’T MAKE ME PAY YOU 40C TO MAKE A MEAT STEW.
I personally think that the DISCOVERY panel and Crafting Experience are unavailable unless you’re aligned, but you can still make whatever you know. This makes some semblance of sense, because you still know how to make whatever it is you know how to make.
