Getting the precursor weapon
The best way is to save money and buy one off of the trading post. The mystic forge is random and unless you make hundreds of gold a week it is not worth it. ~250attempts with rares 0.4% chance and ~160 attempt with exotics 0.6% chance. So just save up your money for a precursor while getting the other mats. http://gw2legendary.com/ 1200-2300g legendary prices have doubled from last year.

Don’t gamble on forge.
Since this is your first, I assume you don’t have a lot of gold. It can be depressing losing all of it.
So it’s really worth it to save up 700-800 gold to get the precursor?

Value always lies in the eye of the beholder.

A guildie got 6 precursors one evening last week. He used random lvl80 exotics of same type, the cheapest ones available on TP.
This hasn’t ever worked for me, though, and I decided to pause any Legendary pursuing until I just get a precursor as a random drop (which could and could not ever happen), but not otherwise. I believe this could theoretically happen as I have being getting a solid amount of Ascended armor and weapon drops recently (4 in the past 2 months). My MF is 123%.

Is the legendary really worth it? That’s the question you have to ask yourself first. The answer to that will then carry over to the question above.
As to mystic forging precursors, keep in mind that some people quit the game because they gambled everything they had and got nothing out of it.
Good example: You want to buy a car, but you only have $2,000. The car you want is $14,000. Your credit is horrible so that’s out of question. This leaves you with three options:
1. Give up on buying the car. (Not getting legendary)
2. Save up to get enough to buy it. (Buying precursor off trading post)
3. Taking all you have and going to closest casino hoping it’s your lucky day (Mystic Forge)
3. Taking all you have and going to closest casino hoping it’s your lucky day (Mystic Forge)
On behalf of the 675g worth of exotics & rares/$100 worth of gems that are no longer mine, do not choose this option…

Think of it this way: Is it worth it to have a guaranteed precursor at 800 gold, or would you rather risk becoming one of those players that always complain on the forums about their trillion gold loss?
I dropped a few hundred gold trying to get mine from the forge since I wanted my legendary to be “pure”…then said screw it and saved the cash and bought mine. It’s quit demoralizing just throwing that much game time away into the mystic toilet.
I usually keep rare weapons that drop for me and put them through the mystic forge. You could argue that I’m losing the revenue of selling said weapons, but I don’t look at values on the TP for those, so I’m not losing much to my mind. You can’t miss what you’ve never had, as they say. If they turn to exotics, I keep those also and throw them in the mystic forge when I’ve got 4. I’m focusing on a few types of weapon, since I haven’t decided on a specific precursor. I figure that if I change my mind on which legendary I want, I can always sell the precursor and keep the money to buy the precursor I want.

unless you’d rather throw 700-800g in the mystic toilet and get nothing
alternately chances of precursor are meant to increase with the rarity of the items you throw in
so try 4 ascended Great Swords
getting your crafting to the point where you can make those will use up a lot of your T6 mats tho so make sure you do might/ magic gifts first

Except for the part where you can’t put ascended weapons into the mystic forge, and even if you could, there’s no way in hell it would be worth it given the cost.
According to some recent large scale tests (thread on this board), the odds of a precursor from 4 Exotics is between 0.7-0.8%. Last report he had tossed 7K worth of Exotics in the Flusher and gotten 20 precursors.
