Giant Eyes are too rare.
I do agree that Giant Eyes could be made a little easier to acquire. My idea:
All Giants now have a chance to drop Giant Eyes when killed. The exact drop rate probably needs to be determined by ANet, but I’m thinking a 1% chance from Veteran/Elite Risen Giants and a 10% chance from Champion Giants (like the ones in Diessa Plateau or Harathi Hinterlands) might be appropriate. The Legendary Sand Giant in Dry Top has a 25% chance to drop one (to give players a bit more incentive to fight him. He’s woefully ignored in most Dry Top instances due to the sheer amount of time necessary to kill him if you don’t have a massive T5/6 zerg).
There is also a very rare chance for Basilisks to drop Giant Eyes, but it’d probably be along the lines of “Charged Lodestones from Sparks” rare.
Somehow it seems that all things with “giant” in them are kinda hard to achieve
Giant Eyes
Giant Slayer.
Giant issue IMO
I remember last year I was looking up the recipe for Immobulus, came across the 250 Giant Eyes, thought “hmm, seems like a lot, maybe I’ll just buy em from the TP”, checked trading post….. only 58 of them available…… “well, kitten”
I’ve seen a total of 0 of them in over 2 years of play. I tried to farm them once, but soon gave up. Would be nice to have them drop a bit more frequently, but I admit that they are a low priority for me atm.
I’ve seen a couple from heavy moldy bags… but yea they are ridiculously rare. An increase in the chance to get them from bags or adding in another source would be nice.

Immobulus is only exotic. Silver Dubloons are for a legendary.
In spite of that, Silver Doubloons are FAR easier to get than these eyes.
First thing you have to do though is stop farming for them with a lvl 80 character.
I recently purchased around 1400 heavy moldy bags on the TP because I was trying to bump up my T5 and T6 materials fast due to wanting to fast track a legendary I was ready to build but was short on the T6 materials and thought Id try something different rather than buy them straight up. I got 8 giant eyes which I sold for around 4g a piece. They certainly seem like they would be a pain to spot farm.
It’s the most fundamental problem with GW2 as a whole (in my opinion): you can’t just go out and farm the things you need to make the special weapons. Take Legendaries for example. In MMOs there have always been two ways to create an item like a Legendary:
1) Easy way: For the rich players, make it quickly by simply buying everything you need. Or if you’re very rich, just buy the item out-right.
2) Hard way: For poorer players, head out into the world and gather, collect, and farm your butt off to get the items you need to start crafting. Cost effective, but takes MUCH longer to complete.
The hard way doesn’t exist in GW2. There are some items you simply just can’t go out and farm. Laurels have made T6 pretty negligible now that you can get the bags from a vendor for only 1 Laurel. However, rare items like Lodestones (Charged cough) or something like Giant’s Eyes simple cannot be farmed in any way. Bags are a joke. If those rare items could reasonably be farmed to the tune of 6-10/hr there wouldn’t be any problem.
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen a neat skin that when I go to the Wiki to check the mats and see a requirement of 250 Giant Eyes, Charged Lodestones, or something else I have maybe 2 of (I’ve never once looted a Giant Eye in over 2 years of playing) I just quietly close the window and go back to playing. I’m not saying I want the more exotic, rare skins handed to me. Some of these items SHOULD be difficult/time consuming to get. But they shouldn’t be straight up impossible for poorer players/casuals to get just because of item rarity.

I’m pretty sure in WoW for example you always had to do a raid or something to get a piece for your legendary item.

And pray that the item drops…
And pray that nobody else rolls/beats your roll…
These mats should be added to the Champ loot bag table, along with all other T6 mats, including Ecto.
In 2 years of playing ive seen 1 of these drop from a Heavy bag in Orr.
In 2 years of farming Orr I got total of 11 Giant Eyes. All came from Heavy Moldy Bags. In that time I grinded enough mats and gold to make a Legendary. Really, there is a problem with that drop.

I think there is another post about this somewhere. I dont think there is an official position othere than talking about the TP and the market.(usually complaints about the price veiled as issues with the drop rate) This video might help you understand what I’m talking about.

I have 5. Four from heavy moldy bags, and one from Mawdrey II. I about died from shock.
I have two sets of data for the drop rate on these.
First set (prior to change in drop rate of blood, fangs, claws)
538,092 Heavy Moldy Bags opened
495 Giant Eyes. 0.09% drop rate
Second set (after the change in drop rates)
217,036 Heavy Moldy Bags opened
224 Giant Eyes. 0.10% drop rate
They are indeed rare.

I’ve got a few thousand Heavy Moldy Bags logged. 0 Giant Eyes.
I did have 2 of them drop for me from mobs over the lifetime of my account.
Wow, so it’s about a 0.1% drop rate. No wonder they’re so rare. O.o
I remember when I was trying to make the eye of rodghort…I think I got like 1 giant’s eye out of like a week of farming all the giants I could find. That was it…
I’ve had more precursors drop than I’ve had eyes drop. If that doesn’t say something, I don’t know what does.

What exactly do you think it’s supposed to say? I’ve had infinitely more giant eyes (about 10 or so) drop than precursors (exactly 0) over the course of about two years. It’s all random.
- Complaint about Heavy Moldy Bags being hard to get is non-issue….they are not.
- Complaint about Giant Eye being very rare from these bags is valid, but they ARE a RARE material and should not be falling out of the sky – Semi-issue, but not overly unreasonable.
- Non-Legendary item requiring 250 Giant Eyes to make is VERY unreasonable…..complaint on this is 100% valid, IMO.
I suspect that the original release plan was that Giant Eyes would have another source and that source is bugged in some way and has never been corrected. Similar to the way the Copper > Silver Doubloon promotion recipe has been bugged since release (and has never been fixed). THAT bug, however, only effects a true Legendary item from being generated, and thus is “less” unreasonable.

The item is only used in 4 recipe I think. Even if Anet increased the drop rate, I highly doubt people will actually farm for it when the price plummet.
There is an underlying philosophical question here, which is “should the game have items which are so hard to make that on average less than one can be crafted in a day among the entire player base?” I actually like the idea that such an item exists.

I’ve sold a few dozen of those doubloons, and still have a few dozen in my bank, but in my two years of playing I’ve never seen one Giant Eye…
I have one drop for me in 2 years and really want to make the eye of Rodghort.
So with this drop rate I will have enough to make my scepter in 20 years, cmon Anet really :[

I dont’ know why everyone in this post felt they have to farm the item their self.
If you want to get 9 more giant eye, it cost 27 gold. I don’t think farming for 27 gold is that harsh.
I’ve spent a fair amount of time in Orr, have ~3500 hours, and have gotten a single Giant Eye. Yes, I believe this item needs a drop rate increase (and we need more giants in the game)!

Its 27g today because someone is selling theirs… If I needed to buy 250 of them the price would be well above 4g a pop by the time I finished. _( Supply and Demand)

I dont’ find it too difficult to fill the buy order quite honestly. You probably have to do it slowly in a patch of 10 without having people aggressively over bidding you.
If what you said is true, the price won’t stay at 3 gold, which have been the price for quite a while. (Supply and demand). Supply is low but quite honestly as a recipe which is used only for 4 items(and 3 of them require low amount), only the immobulus require a huge amount).
(edited by laokoko.7403)
Don’t expect anybody to be walking around with Immobulus any time before the game folds.
It is my opinion that Arenanet are scared to change drop-rates. It causes manipulators/speculators to get upset about their “investments”. This is why I confidently predict that it won’t be changed.

I was refering to trying to buy all of them at the same time (buy order or straight up purchasing). If you put in 250 buy orders with an item this low supply you’d simply be forcing people to outbid you (overbidding by a few copper). Now throw in someone else’s 250, and you can rest assured it will take a very long time before your order is reached. Unless you overbid the other order, introducing a bidding war and temporary inflation. (When both are done price will gently return back to around 3 gold.

I constructed my Immobulus this past winter, during a time when the buy orders were about 1g25s-1g30s. The period before I bought the eyes had the buy order price a bit over 2g. A month after I finished mine, the price shot up to over 3g per eye. It took me approximately three weeks to have the orders filled, with a lot of overcutting by 1-5c.
The items are just too bloody rare for the quantity needed for that weapon (the 1 and 10 eye weapons are fine).
My guild (most of us playing since launch or before, with 3k-6k hours) averages out now to more precursors than giant eyes; and we all have spent a great deal of time in Orr and Arah.
I’ve had 0 eyes and 1 pre (champ bag)
Guildee1 had 2 eyes and 1 pre (forge)
Guildee2 had 1 eye and 1 pre (forge)
Guildee3 had 1 eye and 0 pres
Guildee4 had 1 eye and 2 pres (karka, dungeon chest)
Guildee5 had 0 eyes and 4 pres (karka, forge, forge, mob drop)
Guildee6 had 0 eyes and 0 pres
Guildee7 had 0 eyes and 0 pres

well bid 3.50. see how many people follows. That being said, maybe a bunch of people did, that’s why the price skyrocket.
probably not a good time to bid on it since not much people is in ore during the halloween event.
