It doesn’t really matter much ;-)
Crafting is now used mainly to get some easy exp.

But there are some points to consider:
1) do you use custom utilities, like foods – that could suggest “chef” (check http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Nourishment)
2) you want some craftable skin – weapon/armorsmith
3) you have more metalic / wooden / jewel / leather mats -> specific profession.
4) you’re going for a specific legendary -> need some profession maxed out.
5) don’t have many cash → check guides to see which is cheaper to max out ;-)
6) want to earn money with crafting → think ;-)

if you dont want to craft, then sell them. crafting is a good way to gain xp but if that doesnt appeal to you, lots of gear can be purchased for less coin than the material cost to craft an item.

My advice to a Guardian: Weaponsmith…. if you want to craft your armor at the same time while you level, you can do that, but for a 2nd craft I usually suggest Chef or Jewel Crafter. Armorsmith has less return on your investment than a lot of the other options. Also, leveling Weaponsmith and Armorsmith in tandem is a pain…. I did it on my Guardian (who is 400 in both) and won’t do that again. There’s a reason my warrior is a 400 Armorsmith and 400 Huntsman…. less overlap with demand on mats.

There is a vocal crowd out there that likes to pretend that crafting is of no value. I will continue to sell them the things I craft and pocket the profits.

Crafting is not the cheapest source of leveling gear, but there are a bunch of cool things you can get with crafting. Or, you can buy those cool things and not get free xp for making them yourself and leveling your crafting with the mats you gathered.

I went with weaponsmith and armorsmith on my guardian. I liked making my own armor, but I also liked gathering. Weaponsmith never really took off for me. I didnt realize it at the time but I picked two of the most expensive crafts on my first character.

craft the stuff you know you are going to use, unless you just want the xp.

That’s kind of why I don’t advocate doing those two together… even though it makes sense for both Heavy Armor classes.

One thing that can curb the cost of leveling weaponsmith is to work on Hammers / Maces / Axes so you drain more wood and have less demand on your metal crafting mats…. Instead of discovering one of each type of Greatsword, discover one of each type of Mace…. you get the same crafting XP, but you use less expensive mats to do it.

I do something similar when going through armor crafting, discovering just hats, gloves and boots. very few mats needed in comparison to the other armor pieces.
