How does mystic forge work?
If you put 4 axes into the MF the output is guaranteed to be an axe. If you put 3 axes and a dagger the output could be any kind of weapon or armor. Putting 4 different armor pieces in (different in either slot or weight) could give you a weapon or a piece of armor.
Essentially, in order to guarantee a type of output you must put 4 of the exact same things in. To get an axe you must put in 4 axes. To get a heavy helmet you must put in 4 heavy helmets. If you put ANYTHING else in your output will be completely random.
3 daggers and an axe will give you a random weapon and will never give you an armor.
I mix water weapons and sub-80 weapons every day, and the result is always a weapon.
Only if you mix armor and weapons will you not know which you will get back.
Answer to all 3 is yes.

It takes goals and extends them indefinitely. Many theorize it runs on the tears of those that it has scammed and works buy stealing dreams and replacing them with bitterness.
I just put four pieces of chest armor into the forge and got shoulder armor back: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lMxlReysNXw
Am I supposed to use all armors of the same type (all heavy, all medium, or all light) to get the same output?

Yes. If you want a light chest you need to put in 4 light chests.
I truly wonder what stats ANet has on everything that has been flushed.
Some of those numbers must be staggering.

I’d like to see an in-game explanation on at least the basics of how the Mystic Forge is supposed to work. I know I can look it up but it’s tedious. I have so many pieces of gear that I want to use but it’s the same as throwing stuff away in my book. I’d really like to delve into the finer parts of it but it’s not at all encouraged by Anet. I also don’t want to watch like 3 hours of YouTube footage.
You sit on it, drops your items into it, and then flush your money down the drain.
Until direct-to-graymatter downloading is perfected, I’d say spending a good 6 minutes reading the wiki will tell you 95% or more of what you need to know about the Mystic Forge.
I wonder what your basis for comparison is…”

DONT DO IT! .. Thats all i have to say about the Mystic forge..
1000g wasted so far! Nothing in return.
I understand that when you combine items of the same tier, there is a chance for your forged item to be of a higher tier (ex. greens -> rares, rares -> exotics). However, the mystic forge allows you to combine both weapons and armors. That is where my confusion lies:
1) If I combine weapons and armor, will the resulting item be either weapon or armor?
2) If I combine all weapons, will the resulting item only be a weapon?
3) If I combine all weapons or armor of the same type (all daggers, all shoulder pieces, etc.), will the resulting item be that same type? Thanks!
1) It can be weapon, armor, or jewelry (getting jewelry is significantly less common though).
2) Yes
3) Yes, although there have been bugs in the past to where specific items would produce another item type. I believe these have all been fixed now though.
More MF info:
The forge has a 20% chance to upgrade the rarity of your loot (blues->greens, greens-> rares, rares->exotics, exotics->exotics though)
That means that on average it takes 16 of the lower quality items to yield one of the higher quality. The forge kicks one back unless you get the higher quality in which case that extra one is kinda eaten. This is an average and if you forge a lot you will get hot and cold streaks. The more you forge the more it evens out.
If you put in 4 items of the same level into the forge, it will produce a higher level item. If you mix levels it seems to average them out but give an increase to the average level. How much it adds seems to be RNG based (as far as I can tell).
You can also upgrade green-> rare or rare->superior runes/sigils in addition to armor and weapons. You can not forge 4 superior runes together to try for a different one. There is a chance that you will get a soulbound run back (dung specific runes can come out of the forge).
That’s probably all you need to know if you’re just forging items and not doing any forge specific recipes like for mystic weapons/recipies/clovers.

I will say that I found the forge to be useful while leveling.
Keeping your gear up to date with Karma gear is easy, unfortunately though, that Karma gear can’t be sold or salvaged when you are done with it. What I do is simply store the gear I’m replacing until I have 4 items and forge them. Sometimes the new item is useful, but most of the time it is simply profitable (you can get Karma gear from the MF, so sometimes you get a piece back that is just as useless as your old gear was).
