I feel like crafting, especially early on, is too much of a grind with little to no reward.

I gather tons of copper ore. I gather a few gemstones. I make one ring and one earring of each kind of gemstone. And then…I…do it a few more times, because I didn’t level enough to unlock more stuff to make. Then I start making intricate gemstones, and I make one of each again…and…I can’t use them, because I’m not high enough level yet. Once I am high enough level to use them, I still can’t make the next tier, so I keep making things I already have 10 of just so I can get my crafting skill up a little higher. Once it gets to where I can make new stuff, I…still can’t use it, because I’m not a high enough level yet. Rinse and repeat, forever.
Even worse is making weapons or armor. I get one of each piece of the armor I can make, and then…I need to make 4 more sets to get to the next tier. I make one of each weapon I can make as an artificer (keeping in mind I only need one of these myself), and then I need to make 20 more to get to the next tier.
I can’t sell them for profit. I can’t even break even. I can salvage them, to make more and save a little time gathering stuff, but all in all it feels like an absolute and constant leak of resources and money from my bank for little to no actual reward.
Oh, and every single time I get close to unlocking a new tier of craftables, half of the ones I can make and actually have ingredients to make…stop giving experience. So I’m stuck making these weird middle-of-the-road type things until I can grind them up to the next tier.
Is it supposed to be this way?

I stopped reading after the first paragraph (forgive me) but I noticed you didn’t mention anywhere that you’re using the Discovery tab…
When you make a certain type of item (ex: Helmet), make sure you use the Discovery tab to “discover” the other related items as well (Chest, legs, shoulders, etc)…
You can pretty much level up exclusively using the Discovery feature.
Read up more about it on the gw2 Wiki.

You have to use the discovery tab to make the crap I mentioned for a jeweler, dude. I figured it was implied. It’s barely possible to make ANYTHING without using the discovery tab to pick the jewel you want.

It sounds like this is what he is doing. I’m having a similar experience as the OP. I do jewelcrafting, for example, and in each tier I make one earring, one amulet, and one ring for each gem type (discovering each along the way). I also make one of each craftable jewels (using the filigree) and this STILL does not take you to the next tier. Also, I did all of my refining first (silver ingots, for example) to milk as much experience as I could before moving on to the discovery phase.
For example, I’m lvl 60 but only have lvl 135 or so Jeweler and I’ve already discovered every single recipe I can possibly make in that tier (I craft with the wiki page open making every possible item variation). In order to go the rest of the way to 150 to qualify to make Gold stuff, I will need to make a crap ton of silver stuff getting virtually no experience for it because I’ve already “discovered” that recipe.
Same with artificer. I’ve already discovered all 7 of the softwood recipes for staff, trident, focus, and scepter, plus numerous lvl 125ish potions (I didn’t have the raw mats to make ALL the potions, but I did about half). Now i’m stuck around lvl 130 and can’t get to seasoned wood until I lvl to 150, which will take forever and a load of mats to do (since I don’t get much experience anymore when making an already discovered recipe).
It’s very frustrating.

Also, the way I’ve been trying to gain more EXP without blowing through 100’s of mats (e.g., silver ore and soft wood logs) is to do as much refinement as possible after discovering every recipe.
For example, I discovered the amethyst silver band (using an amethyst nugget). Now, I use all my nuggets to refine them into “amethyst lumps” basically in anticipation of making amethyst gold rings. The problem is that this isn’t getting me to lvl 150, so I can’t even refine the gold ore into ingots yet.

here is the breakdown for jeweler crafting 1-325. http://www.guildwars2-crafting.com/jeweler.html. It’s pretty straightforward and the pattern follows after the 325 similar to any other crafting system.

Bsquared – I sympathize with your frustration, but I just want to clarify something about your process. You say that you are discovering one of each ring, earring and necklace for each gem – and then discovering the filigrees for each gem. Great – but you’re right; that alone won’t get you to the next tier. Are you then using those upgraded jewels to discover the Masterwork level recipes for the tier?
For example, you take an Amethyst Nuggest and a Silver Filigree – combine them to get an Intricate Amethyst Jewel. You can then take that Intricate Amethyst Jewel, a Silver Setting, and a Silver Band to discover an Amethyst Silver Band (Master). It’s a different Discovery from the initial Amethyst Silver Band you would have discovered with the unadorned Amethyst Nugget. You can do this with the ring, earring and necklace for each gem type. If you are following what’s on the wiki – it can be easy to miss these since they don’t spell them out the way they do the regular recipes. These should get you to the next tier.
If you are already doing this – my apologies. Then I’m rather stumped on why you’re hitting a dead zone getting from Silver to Gold!
