I wish crafting progression was smoother
In case you havent noticed there is something called the trading post where you can buy material you need.
you level too fast in this game to get enough materials to level any crafting skill alongside your level. And the only way to not stay in zones lower than your level gathering materials is to play trough 2-3 characters to 80. with 2-3 characters at 80 you should have been able to gather enough materials to get at least 1 crafting skill to 400. unless you rush trough the zones.
also, there is no one who force you to grind to get the materials. + your better off grinding money at lvl 80 then buy hte materials. grinding low value mats for mid level crafting isnt worth the time and effort.
If getting the gold to buy materials from the TP is easier than just gathering them, then I think it’s indicative of a fairly serious issue.
Why bother with a Gathering system if players are just gonna grind money instead and then buy their ingredients?

because you need lvl 400 in a crafting skill to create legendarys and other unique weapons in the mystic forge.
Also crafting provide an alternative route to maxing your character level.
Did I mention all crating skills is pretty much obselete due to too many people have 400 in all crafting skills ? unless you want a quick level, a legendary or another unique weapon skin the crafting skills serve no purpose at this point.

I don’t see a connection between my question and your answer.

Because the gathering system is used for the materials people don’t buy. Ores and wood are usually not bought, since they can be gathered. What blocks progression, especially in the 100 crafting range, are the fine crafting materials such as vials of blood, which are not gathered, rather found as drops.

Picking one to rank up at a time might feel like a quicker progression process. I spread materials on all Crafts after launch, but quickly priorities which ones i wanted to do sooner.
Use http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Crafting_material to identify the material you want to get, then click the material for source locations and go farm them. TP is an option, but not required. Also, doing 100% map completion gets you a stack of a material of that map’s rank/tier (along with other loot). http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Map_completion
The last Craft I got to 400 was Leatherworking, and I did it slowly. I did it merely for the Achievement (Anet points/hero tab) of getting all Crafts to 400 and not because I wanted anything it could produce. One day, there might be new recipes added to the game and other possible motivating reasons to get all Crafts to 400. My 1st character was a Thief and have not had a medium class character since, was also an aspect to not doing Leatherworking sooner. When I made alts with Heavy class, I had motivation to get that Craft ranked up to be able to make gear for them (with particular stats).
If you don’t plan on using an alt much for a few days, park them at a jumping puzzle loot chest, and login once a day with them to get some loot they might be able to use.
I’ve been sharing materials with guild mates.
