Hi,

I’ve been looking at prices for stuff you can craft at the higher levels. It always seems that the mats could sell for more than what you could get by crafting something. Is there any point in crafting anything if you’re trying to make gold?

Thanks.

Yes, there are items that are profitable to craft.

Typically those items are NOT completed pieces of gear though…

quickie example:
Settler’s Pearl Carver
Settler’s Orichalcum Imbued Inscription = 1g70s
5 x ecto = 1g80s
2 components = 5 orichalcum ingot = 50s
total cost = 4g1s
sell price = 16g
profit after tax = 9g58s

*edit: apparently, in the time it took to write that, the sell price dropped to 4g80s, which puts the profit at 7s instead of 9g :P well, there are others!

Thanks. I was actually thinking of the gear. Can you give any rough examples of things worth crafting. just to give me a flavor for the sort of stuff you’re talking about?

Due to the ebb and flow of the markets, it won’t be the same thing every day.

Insignias/Inscriptions tend to be profitable, but not in high volume (i.e. you can squeeze some gold out of low demand insignias because the materials are also low demand, but since they are low demand you are only going to move a few of them).

Other things would be items that appear on the crafting guide lists. Players that use those guides aren’t doing any shopping, they are just following a checklist so you can craft items and sell them to those players.

For me it certainly is. Let’s take a couple of examples:

1. Bolt of Damask. Current sell on TP is 13.5g. Mat’s from farming and doing dailies for a week more than covers the needs for a couple of bolts. Investment isn’t very much at all, mostly just salvage kit uses and such.

2. Deldrimor Steel Plated Dowel. Current sell on TP is 23.5g. As above, mostly made from disused materials and farming/mining nodes. Very little outlay compared to the profit.

I have no intentions of making ascended gear for any of my characters so I may as well make some profit from my materials. As I don’t play the TP and get by on a few gold a day from my limited time online I figure this is a legit way to make a rather tidy sum.

Well VD, my point is that you could probably have made as much, if not more, from simply selling the mats instead. I actually think, because there’s so much supply and demand, that prices all even out so there’s no profit from crafting vs selling the mats.

Anyway, thanks for the responses.

Considering that the Elder Spirit Residue and Mithrillium have no actual value because they’re accountbound, that’s a bold call. There’s no chance in hell you’d get anything like the profits from the materials used to craft these (20 x T2 / 10 x T3 / 20 x T4) if sold separately. Besides, the rarity (supply/demand) is the inflation factor. Going by TP stats just a few hours ago, it seems that not many people can be bothered crafting these materials for ascended gear.

You may be right. I guess I was looking at sell price when comparing, but buy price is more likely what you could sell the mats for. So, you do come out ahead by crafting those. Thanks for the tip.

Elonian Leather Square: cost to make = (1)(58)(14), sell for (2)(67)(16) = 43.6% profit
Bolt of Damask: cost to make = (9)(31)(94), sell for (13)(74)(99) = 25.4% profit
Deldrimor Steel Ingot: cost to make = (2)(54)(24), sell for (4)(24)(99) = 42.1% profit
Spiritwood Plank: cost to make = (2)(43)(24), sell for (2)(69)(98) = -5.7% profit
Deldrimor Steel Plated Dowel: cost to make = (17)(88)(84), sell for (22)(95)(89) = 9.1% profit (via buying the spiritwood and deldrimor)

I would very much appreciate you making and selling these I need to buy a lot of them and would welcome lower prices (even 1c undercut will lower the price 1c)

I just realized. crafting ascended materials is currently the fastest way to make gold in the game :P
Elonian + Damask + Deldrimor: cost to make = (13)(44)(32), sell for (20)(67)(14) = 30.7% profit = (4)(12)(74) profit
Takes about 1 min to buy enough materials for a month, then about 18 seconds to craft each day. so 4g in 18 seconds = 800g/hour

@Mystic – That’s assuming you can actually sell them for that price. There are no buy orders at those prices, those are just other sell orders.

You can only do that once a day, and most people crafting ascended gear will craft everything themselves as obviously it’s much cheaper. You are only selling to rich players who don’t want to bother with all the time gated crafting so volume is really low. This lets you get undercut very easily and you need to be patient as well as potentially lose your listing fee if you need to undercut someone else.

I make near 100% profit because I don’t go buying up other ascended gear on the TP to craft more gear for ascended materials. Thus, yesterday I made a tidy 100g+ profit from just selling Deld steel plated dowels. Allow some more time to gather mat’s and maybe 3-4 weeks I’ll have enough to craft another batch. =)

If your gathering all your materials, then your not really ‘profiting’ right? Your just converting self harvested raw materials into T7 dowels to get the max reward from all that farming right?

If you where to pay others to farm with buy orders on the raw materials, then spend your daily craft allotment on refining them into dowels, then you are making some profit as well as selling your daily craft time.

Some people will argue that there is an opportunity cost involved in farming your own materials. Were this the real world, I would agree, but since every second spent in a video game is your recreational time, I’m inclined to leave opportunity costs out of the equation when discussing “profit”.

You can’t really leave it out. You need to consider what else you could have been doing to make gold that could have been an even better investment of time.

And if you are not having fund doing what you “could” be doing then it cost more.

If you are having fun gathering the mats, I am more incline to believe there is no opportunity cost because the profit you are gaining is simply the result of having fun.

The profits have TP risk associated with them. I played it safe(ish) with Deldrimoor chest pieces. At sell now there would have been a loss, but I knew that I wanted to craft my own armour so when I put up one at a time for sale all I was risking was my listing fee.

Yes, but this is in the course of my normal play.

I don’t play the same way everyone else does. I’m happy to get by on 2-3g profit a day most of the time. I don’t care how anyone else plays or what they do to make money within the game, but this is how I roll. I’m not using the materials that I craft, so I make money from them so someone else who needs them has better use for them. And I’ll just have to find a better use for all that unwanted coin. =)

you do profit more by crafting with what you gather rather than buy.
the reason is that you’re not paying 15% TP fees for selling what you gather.
buy 100 mithril, make lump of mithrillium (costs ~30s)
vs.
gather 100 mithril, sell with 15% fee, buy 100 mithril, make lump of mithrillium (~25s-30s = costs 5s)
vs.
gather 100 mithril, make lump of mithrillium (costs 0s)

so crafting it from what you gather saves ~5s (15%).

2 tips:
1. Always give check sell orders and buy orders. It tells you how much you could sell for vs how much people are willing to pay, and if there are a lot of high price buy orders and just a couple sell orders, you know your items will sell fast due to high demand.
2. Don’t tell people what you’re crafting (I’d say help people learn to craft for profit, except I’m breaking that right now) because the more people doing it, the less profitable it is. I crafted a bunch of __________s for profit and as soon as people saw me making a pretty coin on it a bunch of other people started doing it dropping it from a 15% profit to a big loss. Try to slow that effect down, because eventually other people will notice and get in on it, so try not to flood the market with stock, or tell everyone what it is you’re doing.

@Mystic According to the wiki, the 10% fee and the 5% fee are both paid by the seller, so if I buy 100 mithril ingots, turn to mithrilium and sell it I pay the same 15% fee I’ll pay if I gathered the mithril and crafted it, unless I’m misunderstanding your posts. You will pay 30 silver, just in the time spent gathering mithril. It’s much more effective to just buy the stuff than to gather it all.

you do pay 15% tax on the final product (mithrillium in this case, except that is non-sellable, so it’s kinda bad at illustrating)
but you pay 15% either way.
the difference is is you also pay 15% on gathered materials you sell vs. no tax on gathered materials you use.

But if you use them, and then sell the new item, you’ll still pay 15% tax.

I get where you’re coming from, but honestly ascended materials take a while to gather base materials for and almost no one has the patience to turn over high profit like I just did. Like you said, these materials are high demand and don’t stay on the TP long, but they do take an age to craft from scratch (thanks timegating).

I make 4-5 gold per day just selling one baked item from cooking. I’ve made a fair bit off damask cloth. I know peeps can do well on some of the lower crafted components that are used to make final crafted items, but I haven’t really bothered with it. As with most crafting games, diversity and knowing your markets are a must for profiting.

I remember selling a bolt of damask cloth in the first days of ascended armour for 10 gold and thinking I’d been really smart. Oops. Mind you I put the money back into raw materials and silk scraps were sitting at about 70 copper at the time. I had also thought I was clever for stocking up on bolts of silk beforehand. As it turns out my one stack didn’t last very long.

I haven’t updated my spreadsheet on damask cloth in a while. In the first few days since it came out I was making 4-6 g profit on it. The last few I sold were netting around 1.5 g each. I tend not to play the TP too much in GW2 as I burned out on it in WoW. Cormac is correct, though, one must check the material prices to be sure there is profit to be had.

Word travels fast in this game, but it’s true time gating will make it harder for others to intrude on your crafting. The second tip is more for other stuff.
