Keeping crafting up with character level??
The wood and ore you find in an area is a good indecation of what level the crafting is. Though I think iron ore is used from 25-50 But you do have to make steel at some point I want to say 35 ish. But not 100%. But basically what ever gathered items you find in an area is what you’ll need for our level. With that said cloth seems hard to come by. So if your doing armor crafting you’ll probably level faster Han you can make armor. I know I did.

This came from the wiki and was posted in the discussion tab on the crafting material page:
Tier 1 | lv 1-19 areas
Tier 2 | lv 20-45 areas
Tier 3 | lv 25-50 areas
Tier 4 | lv 50-70 areas
Tier 5 | lv 70-80 areas
Tier 6 | lv 80 areas

This might not be completely accurate but it does give a good overview. And the page itself can tell you per mat where to find them in-game.
The problem is (as you’ve experienced yourself, Neko) your character invariably out-levels the crafting tier they can craft and that level based equipment is generally cheaper on the TP than when self-crafted. Add to that the relative scarcity of crafting mats you are able to farm at tier-level, it is much better to just bank everything you farm/salvage and start your crafting at around level 70 (if you want to level from crafting) or even after you hit 80. You should then be able self-craft your exotics and perhaps even some ascended equipment right away, having bought (or found) blue and green equipment on the way to 80.
That said, if you never want to use ascended (the only reason to self-craft as they are account bound) equipment, you should never get into crafting at all. You will make more money selling your collected mats (for the right price) and buying what you need from the proceeds. Sure, some people will invariably come and disagree with me, but the examples they will allude to where crafting can make you money are a few niche markets where they are quite possibly already stakeholders.

SandraSolace gave a good response, but I will add that when I up levelled my alts I did my crafting in five hits. At level 18 I crafted armour and weapons to level 75 and got myself a full set of level 20 greens (the crafting took me up the last 2 levels), then I crafted to 150 for my level 35 greens, 225 for level 50, 300 for level 65 and last I crafted to 400 for my level 80 yellows. Ascended has changed the game a little and now that I have all crafting skills I haven’t bothered to use crafting for my latest alt, but I hope that helps.
