Legendaries and the selling of such.
Not a good idea.
If you take away the cost of a precursor and just add the cost of the other parts
then you will see the selling price ( after listing fee and sale fee ) would be very little
And because its a weapon no one really wants it will take alot longer to sell and most likely be undercut by 1copper allot.
Best way to get a Legendary is to make the clovers first save up all the T6 mats, lodestones, ecto’s world completion ext ext.. then once you have “everything” other then the precursor… figure out what you want to do then.
The last thing you get should be the precursor weapon and we have Crafting to L500 coming soon that Anet have SAID you will be able to craft a precursor so by the time you have everything you may be able to craft one for under 100g or maybe even less if its more time gated.
YOU WILL NOT MAKE money that way and the money you do make will no way be worth the 200 skill points, map completion, cost of 77 clovers and all the other parts that you will need to refarm all over again to do it a second time.
Remember you only get 2 gifts of exploration when doing 100% map completion not something i would want to waste..
200 skill points you can get easy now with champ farming
Do some champ farming.. in the past week and a bit ive made 300g and so has my friend from 3 hours a day only!
Ive put in 1000g worth of exotics into the mystic forge.. 1000 ecto’s to get 240 clovers. and never did i get a precursor i should have just saved up all this time but i wanted it quicker! don’t try to shortcut it .. it only makes it harder to get i learned the hard way.

It depends, but some legendaries are cheaper bought than made(if you consider how long it takes for map completion which is the bulk of the time sink for crafting one, the rest like karma/tokens are gained naturally by playing the game).
That being said, the margin for profit isn’t that big compared for cheap/unpopular legendaries to farming with the time you’re doing map completion.
You’re also gonna sit there for a while waiting for the item you listed to be sold and in the end you probably only get 100-200g profit(which was like 5-10 hours farming last event, way too low for map completion time sink).
I’ll give Minstrel as an example, it was listed for 900g and sold according to spidy, its 722g to make and 765g after taxes and it sat there for quite a long time.
You’re probably better off investing in limited time items that have a high possibility of gaining in price over time.
I appreciate the input very much, thank you. I just feel like, I usually have poo for luck, and the random chance for a pre isnt going to happen, Im about halfway done with getting all the mats and everything, and that all hasnt even been that bad. I havnt farmed or anything, just been enjoying the game for the past year. I do appreciate the advice though, thank you. Just knowing the only way to get a pre is random dumb luck (which I never have) or spending hundreds of dollars of real life money is very discouraging. Maybe though. Just maybe. My luck will cash in. ;D
just dont go putting in lots of items into the mystic toilet thinking a nice dusk will come out… ONLY ever put in a few yellows once in a while.. never any more! save save save!!! and u will have it… play the mystic toilet and you will kick yourself in the butt like i have
It would still sell for around 1k gold (Cost around 900 gold to make) and the listing fee would be alot. It would barely be any profit, and for the 1m karma and probably 400 SP its not worth it…
I have a friend who decided to do this and his legendary on the TP just got undercut and has been sitting there for a few days already. This is a gamble and I do not recommend it to anyone.
With the “promise” of precursor crafting and new legendaries on the horizon, i wouldn’t be surprised if, when these are announced, precursors take a bit of a drop in price due to people racing to the new legendaries.
Just work on everything else and save gold. It’s the most reliable way and farming gold is easy as pie with these new events.
GLHF!
Don’t do it. You’ll lose money on the listing fee and you won’t be able to afford relisting it.
The risk of being undercut + having limited demand for the item is a recipe for disaster.

Bad idea. You’ll either spend too much time gathering tier 6 mats or too much money buying them, plus getting the other components (like mystic clovers), etc for a legendary you don’t even want. Only to have to do it all over again for the legendary you do want.
Just save money, do some orichalcum farming every now and then and you’ll eventually get there. Or you might get lucky and get a precursor drop. Just be patient and slowly work your way towards your goal and you’ll start seeing some progress.

As others have said it’s a big time investment for not a lot of gold reward to craft and then sell a finished legendary weapon.
One method that really helped me was to do dung’s and then turn the tokens in for exotic daggers then forge them. Daggers are the best token->item->gold item you can buy. Spark is big big bucks if you get lucky. Even if not, daggers are the most expensive 1h weapon on average.
Another alternative is to get 3 foci (least expensive weapon from tokens) with the tokens and toss in 1 forge stone (which you may have a lot of from achievement chests). The forge stone makes the weapon you get out random. Lower token cost, but more risk involved with this method.
You’ll always get something you can sell from something you couldn’t (dung tokens). Which will move you closer to your end goal even if you don’t wind up ever getting a precursor.
NOTE: Some tokens are better turned into rares then salvaged for ecto’s. Dungs that reward level 68+ rares for 30 tokens I would use this method instead and use those ecto’s towards your clovers. This still moves you towards your final goal.
Pre-patch I was farming up tokens like nobodies buisness. I was doing things like SE path 1/3 then swapping to an alt to get 60 tokens per run every time. Now you can’t get as many, but the dung’s reward you with more hard cash. Again… this cash you can use to help you with your legendary and tbh you’ll make more in a shorter amount of time now, you just can’t farm the ever loving kitten out of them on alts to get tons of tokens.
Learning to play the TP is another great thing to help you get to your goal. The general idea is buy with order->???-> profit. If you’re clever and figure out something that not many are doing you can make good cash while you’re off killing stuff in dungs. WARNING: this can also have some risk involved as the market is constantly changing (at the same time you can use that to your advantage though).

No real point to get a legendary, no functional point at least. I mean, unless you wanna invest countless hours just to look different Same stats as exotics. It’s pointless.

Soon legendaries will allow you to change the stats on the weapon when out of combat. PVT->Zerk->Whatever on the fly.
They’ll also automatically be given the same stats as the top weapons (they’ll have ascended stats once those are released).
The ladies love to RP with guys with legendaries.
Seriously, they love it.

Which is kind of useless if you ask me. It only really serves as a QoL thing when changing your whole build (which is not something you’ll be doing on the fly, because it requires a completely new set of equipment and a full trait respec). Otherwise, you’ll just end up having a weapon whose stats don’t gel with the rest of your gear.
If you take 5 minutes, grab a pencil, paper and do some basic math (doesn’t even have to have the most accurate prices); you will realize within seconds why this is a very VERY bad idea and the huge loses you will have.

Just think of it this way, you’ll have access to all the ascended stat combinations right when they are introduced and they are time gated to acquire. There are roughly 23 stat combinations right now so it is potentially worth 23 ascended weapons.
From what we experienced for trinkets you can expect each piece to be gated 10-30 days with a next to impossible rng acquisition rate so that’s definitely something to consider.
