Q:

I have been playing guild wars 2 for 2 months. Now it’s time for me to set a goal and thinking about crafting a legendary weapon for my thief (most probably incinerator).

For veterans, where do I start in crafting a legendary weapon? Thanks!

A:

World Completion first, due to the WvW requirement. You may have to wait a few weeks for your server to change colors, giving you access to areas that would be nearly impossible otherwise. Even if you don’t start with PvE world completion, start working on the WvW portion as soon as you can and watch for when your server takes over difficult areas. Using a thief is a huge advantage, as you can use stealth and SB #5 to get around really quickly and check off every camp behind enemy lines without a problem.

When to get the precursor is kinda unclear. It depends on whether you expect prices to go up (in which case you’d buy asap) or down (buy at the end). I prefer the precursor first as it essentially sets my goal and pushes me through getting the rest. I bought Spark when starting Incinerator at around 900g, and thought I was paying too much. I got lucky :x

Aside from those, get your clovers before your T6 materials, since when you roll for clovers you’ll get some T6 in the process. The rest is really up to you. Obby shards and badges are easily farmed, especially now with megaservers Balthazar is often captured through most of the day. The plat/mith/ori can be farmed daily while you focus on other goals. I recently did incinerator myself and didn’t have to buy any metals to complete that part of the legendary.

I’m not exactly a veteran, but this is how i’d recommend it, being someone who’s almost done with their legendary (about 300g from my precursor which is the last piece)

precursor first, if you can handle it
world completion
mystic clovers
T6/Ectos or your Gift of Incinerator
Gift or T6/Ectos

by that point you should be in excess of all the karma/badges/skillpoints/etc. that you need

Precursor first and foremost.
After you have it, the rest is easy and you can take your time for karma/tokens/completion/mats
Or you’ll end up like me, with 5mil karma, gifts ready in my bank, watching the pre i need jump up in price everytime i have nearly enough to buy it, thanks to TP flippers.

Just don’t have enough time to farm the daily gold needed to keep up with artificial inflation :\

I REALLY regret not buying the pre 1 year ago, hoping to get a drop or an update that introduced precursor crafting.

I originally planned on getting the precursor first (howl) but 3 weeks ago, it rose 100 gold in price, either do to TP flippers or increased demand, as I’ve noticed about 6-8 buy orders usually that keep the buy price over 470 gold when it used to be 370 back in may. Therefore I’m going to spend the 550ish gold I have stored up on T6 mats by placing lowish buy orders for them, and I’ll probably place those buy orders later today, in hopes that the precursor price will decrease a bit by the time I acquire enough gold again to place buy orders.

Definitly do map completion first. Its probably the most fun part of the whole process, and once that is over, the massive gold farm begins. Salvage every rare you get and the ectos will pour in for your mystic clovers (do after or during map completion when you get ~231 ectos/enough karma and skill points) and then the gift of fortune over time. After you have all the raw ecto you need, salvage any more that you get to save a bit of silver on crystalline dust until you get 250 of that, and you’ll get tons of luck along the way.

Make sure to level up the crafting disciplines you need to 400 relatively early, I’m glad I got all of mine to 400 last summer before ascended crafting made it a bit pricyer.

As for money, I’d recommend running as many easy dungeon paths as you can every day until your eyes bleed, for the gold you can get and the tokens that you can trade in for ways to make more gold. I hate AC and CoF and SE and TA and CM so much now that I’m completely sick of them, so it gets to the point where I’ll “waste” a day playing spvp or WvW, which doesn’t derail my progress too bad since I have some small time TP flipping waiting to pay off. I’ve also been selling old stuff of value to help out, such as promoting all of my charged cores and selling them to my guildmate to avoid the TP tax, salvaging 2 strength runes and 6 perplex runes from old character builds that I don’t use anymore.

I suppose it sounds like I’m getting a bit desperate, but I finally feel like I’m starting to get close to making this thing. I even ran around like a maniac on my necromancer in cursed shore last night chopping down all the trees I could find for my gift of deforestation. I’ve had my gift of mastery and clovers done for a year, and I gave up several times and blew my money on other stuff like T3 armor and gem store stuff because the gold farm was too daunting. Now, today, after coming back to GW2 at the beginning of May, I feel like I stand a chance of finishing howler in the next few weeks. I basically just need enough gold for my precursor, icy runestones, and the 10 gold gift recipes. If howl falls back to its “normal” price then I’m looking at another 500 gold left to get, which is a lot, but I’m confident that it won’t take me more than a few weeks to accumulate that much.

Anyways, that post got long, but I hope that my story will help you.

Edit: After making a quick spread sheet for the gift of fortune, and looking at pricing trends to determine the value of a low but reasonable buy order for all the T6 mats (sans dust since I salvaged for them and with an extra 250 fangs for howler added) it will cost me 555 gold, which will put me back into the poverty zone, but at least I’ll be able to sell any new T6 mats that come in randomly after that. The good thing is that I save about 100 gold using buy orders for everything rather than buying sell orders.

My suggested order of things to get:
1) Gift of Battle (Badges from WvW) + Bloodstone Shard (200 SP) + Gift of Exploration (Map Completion)
2) Mystic Clovers (Karma + SP)
3) Gift of Mastery (Karma)
4) 100 Icy Runestones + Gift of Legendary (gold and materials and a dungeon’s tokens)
5) Precursor (gold)
6) Gift of Magic + Gift of Might + Gift of Fortune (materials)
7) Legendary
the reason for it is to find things you normally find while collecting unbuyables (karma, SP, map completion), so that when you go to buy them, you won’t need as much. same for collecting gold for precursor: be collecting T6 mats for Gift of M&M at the same time.

I’d switch your Icy Runestones to after your pre because the runestones have a static value and having that extra 100g can let you take advantage of a drop in the pre price, but otherwise Mystic’s suggestion is probably the best order.

I’ve heard that T6 prices may rise soon due to the CP going away and anet banning tons of bottersin the past few weeks with a new method, and some of the pricing on spidy already reflects that. So I bought up all my mats yesterday, and I’ll wait to do the precursor then the runestones in the next couple of weeks. I don’t know if it was a good idea doing it that way, but I didn’t want to risk the mats being much more expensive when I needed them, and howl is still a bit expensive, so I’m hoping it might go back down to where it was a month ago in the next few weeks.

you know, I started like that, but then I realized that gift of legendary requires dungeon tokens and materials. bah. materials should be later. updated list:

1) Gift of Battle (Badges from WvW) + Bloodstone Shard (200 SP) + Gift of Exploration (Map Completion)
2) Mystic Clovers (Karma + SP)
3) Gift of Dungeon (dungeon tokens)
4) Gift of Mastery (Karma)
5) Precursor (gold)
6) 100 Icy Runestones (gold)
7) Gift of Legendary (gold and materials)
8) Gift of Magic + Gift of Might + Gift of Fortune (materials)
9) Legendary

I should add that the order will change depending on the player – what they already have and what types of activities they like doing.

Thank you very much for the replies. I am currently sitting at 130g not very much I guess and It’ll take a long time before I get that Spark. Currently doing dungeons and completing the explorable areas. Have made my chef and weaponsmith to 400 just yesterday and started to make clovers as well.

I wonder how longer it’ll take me but I hope that I can get there soon

My advice: Wait until you get a precursor. If you happen to get one that’s not the one you’re wanting to make, then sell it and use the gold from that to buy the one you want. Get 100% map completion done while you’re trying to get the precursor, so you’ll have that out of the way. If you’re going for a legendary that requires lodestones, run the dungeon that drops them everyday (at least two of the paths); CoE for charged, SE for destroyer, TA for onyx, etc. And save all of the T6 you get.

Better hold off your T6 mat, shard, lodestone. DON’T try to make any of the gift before you get yourself a precursor. This is very important before once you made a gift you are no turning back.

Try world completion first, you may have luck getting a precursor but save up gold as a backup plan. In case you done your map completion and still no precursor, buy one from TP, if you dont have enough gold, see if the mat in your bank is worth enough to pay the precursor cost. If yes, sold them and buy yourself a precursor. This is why i said not to make any gift, as the mat cost could be the key to your precursor. NOTHING is more important than a precursor. Even if you dont want to make a legendary later, you can still sell it for much more gold later.

Once you have a precursor, only a matter of time to your succeed. Dont gamble dont rush because you will never be the first legendary user nor the last.

I personally disagree, as I’ve said before in this thread, T6 prices may be permanently rising, and I didn’t want to take that chance, especially since my precursor spiked a few weeks ago for no reason explainable other than flippers (howl) and I thought it may go back down while I build up my gold again.

The crown pavilion leaving and Anet’s new anti-botting measures may reduce the supply of T6 mats in the short term,

http://www.gw2spidy.com/item/24358

This pricing for ancient bones is an example. As you can see by looking at its price over the last month, it has raised from the high 30s into the mid-high 40s, and that could be even higher soon when the CP goes away and if S2 doesn’t give us an easy T6 source.

Because of this I thought it would be safer to finish the gift of fortune and get the other stack of T6 I needed for the legendary gift before the precursor, and I feel relatively wish in my decision, especially since it may be easier to buy howl for cheaper (the next step for me, then runestones, recipes and the gift of deforestation). But if you’re going for a more expensive legendary, than maybe getting the precursor first might be a better idea.

Can you give some insight on farming obby shards? With the recent changes to karma farming, I’m having trouble finding up to date info.

I’d recommend simply karma training in WvW or in the Edge of the Mists or any other event train-like system such as CS or the crown pavilion (although thats leaving). The karma just pours in like water as you do other fun activities in the game, so you should be able to get all of the obsidian you need by the time you have enough gold to buy most of everything else.

Question now that legendaries are account-bound rather than soul-bound, and you can do almost everything on any alt and give it to the alt that wants it: what about bloodstone shards? Are they still soulbound? What if you have everything else you need but the alt you want to use it on has no skill points? Another alt can make it and give it to the alt that needs it, right? Or am I missing something.

I threw dungeon token weapons a while ago into the forge and suddenly got the storm (pre-cursor for meteorlogicus). I didn’t expect anything really.

I was about to give up with incinerator cause I can’t play my thief properly so I bought the bard (pre cursor for minstrel) for my mesmer 2 days ago. Now I am confused what to craft lol.

But the real problem is the T6 mats. They are so expensive right now. I’ve got some from making the clovers but the amount I acquired is much less than the needed mats.

How do you get T6 mats easily? Is transmuting the materials worth it for making T6 mats? Thanks!

Wow, congrats, thats exceedingly lucky for someone who started playing GW2 only 2 months ago! I came back to the game a little less than two months ago (after finishing the gift of mastery and my clovers last summer) and I finished the gift of fortune last week when T6 mats were starting to increase again, and also bought 250 extra fangs needed for howler, so all in all I spent about 550 gold last week to finish it. Now I’m back to almost 300 gold from medium term investments finally cashing in, and I still have a bunch of skill points, dungeon tokens, and a perplexity runeset on my thief-mule to sell, so I basically just need the precursor (380-460 gold atm) the runestones, the recipes, and the gift of deforestation.

As for promoting T6 mats, this resource may be helpful
https://docs.google.com/a/elmira.edu/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0As-wCpIszrT9dFB3YjVUVFhfenlDUUpXTVBIdm5qWmc&usp=sharing#gid=12

I use it as a guide to convert my hundreds of unused skill points into gold, typically through lodestone promotion, since there is essentially no risk involved, but it makes less money than more tedious methods like kitten T2. This assumes that you want to buy all the materials and sell them for profit though, so without taking that into account promoting most mats to T6 should be cheaper than buying them outright if you have the skill points, but there is some luck involved.

As for what legendary you should craft, thats up to you. I think the minstrel would be a bit easy to finish in the next few weeks, and it will definitely provide you with instant gratification! I also personally believe that incinerator (along with bifrost, sunrise and twilight) are a bit too common and bland these days because so many people have them. The legendary offhands and main hand legendaries are cooler to me, in part because I don’t see them every day. You can also use focus on a huge amount of classes, as you can with incinerator, and if you’re a human female mesmer, it looks so kitten good with the chaos of lyssa and infinite light, which one of my friends has on their mesmer!

Oh also, I once wanted to make meteorlogicus, but I only really use it on ele, and since I main necro in WvW cause its basically an AoE death machine there, howler became a much better and more obtainable choice for me (once its done in the next couple of weeks).

I advise against crafting Minstrel because it’s just not a great looking legendary. I think it’s a cool item but it just doesn’t compare to the others, and it’s not even the best looking focus.

op-
WvW map completion can be the biggest headache. Go in right now, get your server’s garrison POI/vistas, and the two northernmost towers on your borderland, especially the northeast tower. Go to eternal borderlands and get the POI/vista for your keep and the four closest towers. If your server controls the castle in the middle, get everything there. Then go back through everything and pick up everything that your server controls. Fridays can be your best bet for picking up map completion because the matchups restart, so people k-train all day and then on reset, there’s a bit of volatility with a lot of the holds. You may even decide you like WvWvW.

Map completion is a nice start because you will explore the entire overworld in the process and see all the nooks and crannies and fun stuff in the game. Even if you decide that a legendary item is too much work, map completion is a big/fun task.

Don’t waste skill points. You need them for clovers/bloodstone shard. They aren’t hard to come by but you don’t want to be 50 SP away from the shard and you have stuff like Mortar on your engineer.

Thank you very much for the spreadsheet. I have decided to make Meteorlogicus first as I can use it for my PU mesmer in WvW. The Minstrel can wait for later. Also, I’’ll be levelling my elementalist. Scepter will be the main weapon for it so I guess Meteorlogicus will be very useful.

Mystic Clovers definitely should be one of the first things you get, since many of your “failures” yield things you need elsewhere in the Legendary.

I’m done with the clovers for now and looking to get more T6 mats. Which are very expensive and quite rare.

Orr events like plix, temple of mel pres, and the various defense events (not the champ farm) are the best way to get t6. Pop an omnom bar and undead potion before party up (just with anyone at the event it helps you both get more loot) and use a class/weapon set that’s easy to tag with like shortbow thief, flamethrower engi, and staff guard. you’ll get alot t5-6 fine mats form drops and also heavy moldy bags (open them if you fell lucky or sell them if you don’t it comes out about the same in the long run). magic find is important for these events so if you have extra boosters this is the time to use them you’ll also get a ton of blues/greens i recommend salvaging them for luck ( use basic kits) if your MF inst over 100, after that increasing it more or selling you blues/greens is a personal decision. Also for most T6 fine mats the t5 to t6 MF recipe is usually a way to save money if you have spare SPs as long as they’re for personal use not selling on the TP.

Edit: Sigil of fire is also great for tagging mobs.

Thank You very much. I noticed that the laurel merchant sells t6 mat bag. I just noticed it after i bought my ascended trinkets. I should’ve used them for this instead

The only things I’m missing right now are some T6 and the very expensive charged lodestone.

Laurels are heavily time gated so I would only recommend using them if you have nothing else to use them for, the bags only have 3 T6 mats in them so that’s about 1.3g worth a day, the Gift of Fortune requires 2000 T6 (plus 250 ectos) so it’s pretty much a drop in the bucket. Another thing that helps is to pay attention to prices a day or two after the living story updates for example venom and totems were cheaper after the last update because they’re dropped from common enemies in the new area. As for Charged loadstones the best advice i can give is to run COE as much as you can they’re along with the cores a relatively common drop from the chests there, the mob there are lvl 80 too so they can also drop T6.

After a month I’m finally there just a few days more to farm the Gold needed for the icy rune stones. Got lucky someone donated 167 pcs of pile of crystalline dust from random peeps from LA.

Also congrats. It makes me think that maybe I should’ve asked for more help with my legendary. I received 12 seasoned wood logs from someone, and 2 armored scales and 1 gold from a generous pug in AC. Everything else I financed myself, and it was tough but a great feeling… but on to the next legendary project soon.

Anyway congrats, and I hope that shiny shiny skin brings you joy

Question now that legendaries are account-bound rather than soul-bound, and you can do almost everything on any alt and give it to the alt that wants it: what about bloodstone shards? Are they still soulbound? What if you have everything else you need but the alt you want to use it on has no skill points? Another alt can make it and give it to the alt that needs it, right? Or am I missing something.

According to the wiki bloodstone shards are still soulbound.

You can do the step that needs the skitten any character, as the result is account bound even if the shard is not.

I see people (strangers in map chat) begging for money/stuff for legendaries every so often, didn’t know people actually gave them anything. O.o

I was thinking of making the minstrel next since i use focus a lot. But I need to give my self some rest. Crafting one is so tiring lol but very much worth it.

I didn’t exactly beg. I linked my progress in LA (linking mats) then donations come pouring. I didn’t know that some people are so kind and supportive. I also asked some of my guildies to sell mats at a cheaper rate it helped but nothing is more helpful than those free mats from LA peeps.

This method will take a lot of time though cause you have not set yourself to get a goal. You may or may not pursue it halfway. Which is a waste of time. For me atleast
