Legendary or ascended gear first
You should start gathering materials for a Legendary in my opinion.
If you don’t want to go Fractals up to 50+ and you don’t want the ascended armor because if its skin, you really. . .really don’t need it!

Mmm, not true, the stat difference between Exotic and Ascended is about 5%, but the damage difference is slightly more extreme, especially when considering Berserker’s and Assassin’s since they have compounding stats.
Additionally, with the amount of money you spend on the precursor alone (unless you get lucky with RNG), you can get a full armorset and 4 weapons, give or take 2 weapons depending on how many crafts you get to 500.
Unless you really like the skin, I would go for Ascended instead.
I will just repeat myself:

You won’t notice these 5%. If there is a certain boss who can onehit you, he will do also if you are full ascended.
Get the ascended trinkets and stuff with laurels and keep your exotic armor.
Go for a legendary. You will have more fun with it.
I would concentrate on the legendary but have the ascended armour ticking over in the background. There are not a lot of materials required for ascended armour that are also required for legendaries. The only thing that will really impede your progress is the cost of getting that profession up to 500.
My advice is to get good at the lower level dungeons, particularly Caudecus’ Manor, Twilight Arbor and Sorrow’s Embrace. If you run these regularly not only will you be getting gold towards your legendary, you will also be collecting t2-4 cloth and leather. And there’s another advantage here too. Soldier, rabid, shaman and magi insignia can be salvaged from armour with those stats bought from token vendors, making levelling up crafting relatively cheap.
Sure, it would be slightly faster if you concentrated on only one, but not a lot, and if you intend to do both anyway this is the most efficient way.
