Master Crafter - I am one, and what a pointless/sad situation it is.

So I got the Master Crafter achievement. I am personally happy I did it as it was a goal that i wanted. Along the way I learned some “efficiencies” to make leveling faster, and each craft went faster then the one before.
Now I figured I could perhaps make some money back, and WOW did I find out how absolutely wrong I was.
Crafting suffers from 2 major problems (as a Master Crafter):
1. You cannot see any recipes from any craft that you are not active in. This is really a poor design flaw. Clearly the database knows what recipes you know, so clearly it could load that info in when you go into your character view and then crafting tab.
2. 40s crafting fee switch. 40SILVER! With as hard as it is for most players to make gold, it costs this HUGE fee to switch to another craft to make something. I don’t even charge 40s to make items, nevermind as a fee on top of charges/tips. There are enough crafters out there that there is always someone else who can make an item without having to switch crafts and incurring that fee.
Sure the 2nd problem is something I knew I would incur once I leveled my crafts on a single character. But I really did not want to craft-level 4 characters with 2 skills each.
Please do something to make crafting something beyond a massive gold sink in the game. Sure some crafts make gold, but its minimal, or its because they hit that perfect niche at the right time.

First off, congratulations. Quite an accomplishment in my opinion. Not sure how difficult it actually is, but I just don’t have the drive to do it, at least not right now.
In regards to your “issues” Don’t mean to sound mean, but it sounds like a personal problem. As a new player, the only incentive any player has for doing this, is the Master Crafter Achievement. There was never any mention of any other reason to do this, unless you count the fact that you could level from 1 to 80 by doing so.
Would it be cool if they did add something to it, sure, but you can’t be mad or upset that their isn’t any bonus, because they never said their would be.
On the plus side, being a Master Crafter allows you to craft all the Legendary components on your own, despite the extreme cost, is still a cool thought.
Would also like to add, that with only 2 crafting disciplines on my character, I have made approx 10g just this weekend from crafting. That’s 10g profit. You can make money, just takes time, patience, and a good idea of the market.
Goodluck.

You don’t have to get all of the professions on one character you know. I got master leatherworker, went to my level 1 necro, got him to 400 jewelcrafting, and I’m at 2/8 for master craftsman.

Still it lends to an issue, its economically unsound to level ANY crafting, as short of taking up jewelry making, (jeweler drops are rare and infrequent, compared to armour)I have found I can sell mats, and purchase virtually anything for less or equal to the cost to craft it myself, and that’s not taking in to account the 3-4 gold it took to get the crafting to max.
Case in point, My friend and I just gave away to a guildmate, about 1.5 gold each, in mats to help him go from 300 to 400 in artificing. Then we spent another 2 gold in supplying and supplementing with trading post purchase, the items for him to craft us an exotic staff. We could have just BOUGHT the staff, for 4 gold off the trading post.
And with the resources we spent to level his artificing, I think we all barely broke even.
After the selling tax and listing fee, I think you actually LOSE money after making items, even exotic.

I’m not hearing a lot of incentives to start taking crafting seriously

There’s virtually no incentive beyond getting Legendary items at present. At least, insofar as I’ve been watching, the only way to net a profit in crafting is to gather all of your materials yourself right now.
I’ve watched overnight as all Tailoring Exotic items were undercut so ridiculously that you don’t actually break-even on crafting and selling them to try to recover the costs from leveling it.
Essentially, it may well be faster income to farm materials and sell them, and then buy the items you want until you have enough of a money cushion and crafting boosters to make the crafting leveling process less painful. This is probably the approach I will take with my remaining 6 professions.

I don’t know what’s happening with the trading post — if there are gold sellers who are spamming it with 1c above vendor price (as many have suggested) to keep the economy crippled, or if there are just an overwhelmingly large amount of people who are too stupid to realize they are losing money by selling things for 1c above vendor (as the TP takes a cut). Either way, I point at that as a large part of the problem.
I find crafting fun and useful myself, for filling in the gaps in my armor, but I admit that if I do the math of what I could buy along the way instead, it barely works out. The XP gain you get from crafting though, is pretty excellent, so in my book it’s worth it for that.
As with all systems in the game, I like the “system” itself with discovery, etc. and hope that it’s just a good foundation on which they will build. The single most interesting thing they could do, in my opinion, is add some more crafter-only gear sets which are soulbound on creation – at max level, so at least we could have some unique looks. Maybe there are such things already, but I haven’t heard of them?

I’m just collecting mats as I level my first guy to 80. Once I level cap, I’ll start working on crafting. I should have a good bulk of needed mats by then and I’ll just go from there. I’ve got most professions to 25-50 just but crafting bars/planks to make some room for more ore/wood. I’m a hoarder
