I’ve always made it a point to gather crafting materials, even ones I don’t need, while I’m out and about in the game. Going from place to place, I’ll always collect wood, metals and cooking components, selling whatever I don’t need at the auction. But lately, I’ve been noticing the drop rate for salvageable leather items has been really getting scarce. Hides don’t drop regularly from animals, junk-grade leather items or leather scraps don’t seem to drop frequently from the sentient enemies I fight either.

This is a bit perturbing for me, since I’m a leatherworker and a huntsman. I’m kind of loathe to give WoW any sort of credit, but I’ll say this; it did at least have a guaranteed way to acquire basic materials for all its crafting skills. Mining guaranteed metal, herbology guaranteed herbs, disenchanting guaranteed magic dust or whatever the hell it was and skinning guaranteed leather. I was honestly rather surprised GW2 didn’t include any sort of skinning mechanic for animals. Instead you’ve got to rely on salvaging leather materials.

Has anyone else noticed any other kinds of materials getting tough to find? For that matter, would anyone else be interested in seeing a skinning mechanic of some sort for the game?

Tailor gets screwed as well for the same reason. You can only gain the materials through drops and you usually outlevel the areas where the materials you need drop. I’m at 400 jeweler and the only thing I had to buy from the TP was gold. I’m in the 300s tailoring and I’ve already bought a couple gold worth of materials because it’s too hard to get what you need just by drops.

To be fair, though, with your WoW example, I played an enchanter before they did the whole “everybody else gets a roll to steal your stuff in dungeons” change and it was fairly difficult to get materials you needed solely by scavenging because you had to rely exclusively on green or better drops.

I did have to buy some leather to craft leather materials to keep my leatherworking around the same level as my character (i.e. able to use the materials I am encountering), but I’m having more trouble with tailoring. I didn’t have enough materials at lvl 15 to craft lvl 15 gear, and the jute, at least, was priced much higher on the auction house than leather or metal. cloth gear was also priced much higher than leather or metal gear. Is anyone else seeing a large gap between light armor prices and other armor prices?

Yes. Medium armor drops way more than light or heavy armor even though leather is needed much less than light armor.

RNG is RNG, I’d say. I haven’t been keeping track, but my stockpiles of Cloth and Leather have been growing at roughly the same pace as each other. (They’re both outstripped by Wood and Metal though, since I get much more of those harvesting from nodes. As a result, I usually vendor any metal or wood items I get rather than salvaging them, unless they’re Masterwork or Higher, then they go on the TP.)

I use the puzzle as a quick easy way to subsidize the material farming that’d come from beating plentiful mobs in certain events.

what rank material are you having difficulty finding?

Taking a high rank character into low rank maps= mixes high rank loot of your character with rank loot of the map, which can add lower potential to get materials of a lower rank.

for my rank 80 Light armored Necro and Elem, I got exotics from AC gear & Karma vendors in Orr. Elem uses Shadow armor style (rank 25) transmuted, and the Necro uses Heritage armor style (transmuted).

(I’m not seeking to stack materials or need more… except to make weapons to chuck into MForge infrequently for a chance at a Precursor. selling blues and greens helps to buy materials for insignias from TP infrequently)
I haz too much Silk and thick Leather Sections, but I also has alts,… will use the silk at some point. not the leather though
