Q:

I’m seeing these terms used in reference to high level armors and weapons, and I’ve been trying to understand what the terms mean. I know a few things, like exotics are needed to craft legendaries, but I don’t know what the difference between mystic and exotic is, and I just NOW heard of ascendeds mentioned in another thread. I can’t find a guide or anything that explains it all. Might someone please explain to me what these terms mean and how they relate to each other? Or otherwise direct me to a helpful guide? I did try the official GW2 wiki, it wasn’t any help. I couldn’t find anything on google, either.

TIA!

There are multiple tiers of items in the game. The most commonly discussed are:

  • Rare items: yellow names. They have almost maxed stats, but are considerably cheaper than the next tier. Some people buy those while trying to get the next tier, some ignore them since they’re not the best thing anyway.
  • Exotic items: orange names. They usually have maxed stats. Dungeon rewards, for example, are exotic items. They are expensive, though, so not everyone has full exotics on their characters yet. Until very recently they were the highest tier, stats-wise, but ArenaNet has just introduced…
  • Ascended items: pink names. Those have just been introduced in the game. They have the highest stats, but for now there are only ascended rings and backpieces, there is no ascended armor or weapons. Which means, right now, if you want to have a maxed stats sword, you would need an exotic sword. ArenaNet said they will introduce ascended weapons and armors in the future, though.
  • Legendary weapons: purple names. Stats-wise, they have the same stats as exotics. The only difference is that they have unique skins and require a lot of time to get, due to those unique skins. ArenaNet has said that, when they introduce ascended weapons, the currently existing legendary weapons will be changed to have ascended stats, so they would always be maxed stats items.

“Mystic” items don’t really exist. “Mystic” is usually something linked to the Mystic Forge, in Lion’s Arch (see a description here). There is a weapon set that can only be obtained through the Mystic Forge called mystic weapons, which are just exotic weapons with a different skin.

“I think that players are starting to mature past the point of wanting to be on that
treadmill, of being in that obvious pattern of every time I catch up you are going to
put another carrot in front of me” – Mike O’Brien right before Ascended weapons

Mystic=Exoitc<Ascended=Legendary

Mystics items are special tier craftable from Mysic Forge. Exotics are best dmg and armor stats in game (right now) without back and rings. Ascented are better version than exotic (adding weapons, armor and other stuff in progress) Legendaries have special skins, visual adds etc. and stats same like exotic (in future will be update to ascended)

OK, the terms are mixed here.

First: item rarity affects item stats – the damage they cause, how many attributes they grant and how much of an attribute boost they provide.

White (regular)→Blue (Fine)→Green (Masterwork)→Yellow (Rare)→Orange(Exotic)→Pink (Ascended)→Purple (Legendary)

Ascended gear is only available for rings and accessories, and legendaries are shared at maximum power – so, they are exotic in power at this time (no ascended power level weapons exist – yet).

Mystic weapon are simply a set of weapons that can be crafted in the Mystic forge with a fixed recipe and fixed stats. They are Exotic in power, and look blue with a lightning element.
