Mystic Forge Stones
They are placeholders for any forge you do, they do not act as another gs is you put 3 (you got lucky), they randomize your forge. They have as much of a chance to give you an exotic like any other thing, the exotics are not “unique” to only using the stone.
So they just take the place of a fourth item? They don’t even increase the chance of something “special” like they say they do? And there’s no special recipes for them? Bummer.
They are also used in creating Mystic Salvage Kits:

XGhoul hit the nail on the head. That’s exactly what they’re used for and they don’t imitate what you’ve also put into the combination (ex. 3 GS + 1 stone does not equal 4 GS)
It just saves you from using an extra exotic/rare or whatever else you’re putting in.

I just toss it in with whatever, since it acts as a random placeholder. I threw it in with 2 shields and a torch, and got back a random shield. I don’t plan on throwing in my other 2 with anything worthwhile, just garbage exotics and hope for a random chance at a good one.
Considering how mystic behave, i don’t buy stones at all. The stone behave randomly as rare or exotic, and even not as a 4th sword/whetever, attempting a precursor. It just save you from using a 4th rare/exotic, risking to get something else at all, even an armor piece noone need. Save your gold/exotics for ectos, better use than this crappy bugged system.
