I’m new to the mystic forge crafting process and I have just a small doubt about combining 4 weapons of the same type:

Do you always get an “upgrade” of what you put in there?

What I mean to say is: will you always get something better than the four items you put in the mystic forge?

the mystic forge is not always a money/item drain guys, 2 days ago, i bought my 4th CoF exotic dagger, and i figured why dont i throw it in the M. forge…… basicly out of 1 try, i got Spark… yeah before that i threw in some random rare daggers i crafted, about 50-60 of them, but this is my first try in a month, plus first try with exotics, and i got it so its all luck mixed in with some rng :P

That would be a no. Actually, I believe that you have a low chance of getting something ‘better’ from the forge. Some have noted they got something worse as well.

the only thing better I’ve ever got from the mystic forge was a named exotic (like Nikka’s) from 4 non-named exotics (like explorer’s)

I have gotten exotics (named and otherwise) from rares and rares from masterworks. It does happen, but not all the time .

I’ve personally dubbed it the mystic toilet because all I ever get from it is crap. so that would be a no. The only time I’ve ever received anything good from it is when I’ve put in a specific recipe, combining never works for me.

Devs are aware of this, but please note:

Swords can give you a downgrade (i.e. 4 green in, 1 blue out), and jewelry can often give nothing at all.

Other item categories appear to be working just fine, so you shouldn’t be getting kitten’d if you avoid those two.

Throwing in exotics give better chance since you’ll 99% will get an exotic back, you’re just playing the “which exotic will i get?” game. Putting in rares will have you playing 2 gambling games, “Will it go to exotic?” and then “which exotic will i get?”. See why people spend more and putting exotics in?

And yes, Swords can downgrade for some reason, had it happen 2x to me.

@ Himei: That is only of value to me though if your going for precursors, otherwise your assured to get 1 exotic for 4 put in, which will always be a loss (except for the odd precursor find).

Ah yes, forgot to mention that. Personally I keep my rare/exotic greatswords to toss into forge at a chance for a precursor, to sell (if you’re not aiming for Sunrise/Twilight).

Just for record…

I got Dusk at 1st try.
- 4 exo all free from fractal.
- 3 account bound 1 not
- random weapon didnt have any GS

In the past 2 weeks I have done around 500 combines in the MF, and found its about a 20% chance for an upgrade. Its very streaky though, I can do 50 items with a single update then the next 50 I will get 19 upgrades.
