Mystic salvage kit - less than 25% rare salvage?
Well unfortunately, since it’s 25%, you could technically salvage 1,000 times and not get a rare, since it’s 25/100 chance every time. It doesn’t add up the more you salvage, or make it more likely to get a rare.
To sum it up, it does indeed seem like you’re having an unlucky streak, but don’t be gambler! Don’t think “My luck HAS to change now!” and keep going at it if you think you shouldn’t! :P

25% drop chance will still average out to 25/100 drops. Drop chance never increases nor decreases by how many prior drops you have or haven’t gotten. If it has a 25% chance to drop that’s 25% chance every single time in every single percentage scenario ever, that’s how percentages work.
That being said, if the drop chance is truly 25%, the amount of rares he gets will average out to 25% eventually. Eventually.
That’s why I’d like to hear from other people who use the mystic salvage kits – if other people are getting 25% or more rares per 70+ salvage then I’ve just been unlucky and there’s no problem
what are your experiences using the mystic salvage kits, does 25% gossamer and orichalcum from 70+ fabric and metal salvage sound correct?
Gossamer and ori are rares now? O_o How are they different from copper ore and jute?
I seemed to be getting very few rare mats from my mystic salvage kit as well, so I tried a little experiment. I bought a bunch of white lv 70+ daggers and cloth chest pieces from the TP.
Out of 40 daggers I got 1 orichalcum proc; the rest mithril.
Out of 25 vests I got exactly 0 gossamer; the rest silk.
Yeah, random “could” produce streaks like this, but it smells really fishy. Even with a 75% failure rate, getting 25 misses in a row is pretty low odds; worse than 1 in a thousand.
Does level matter? Should anything that would ordinarily give tier 5 mats have the same 25% chance regardless of whether they’re lv 70 or lv 80? Does rarity matter? Could it be that lv 75 whites are meant to be truly worthless?
Well, I ran a much larger sample, 200 level 80 Acolyte Leg pieces. I got a total of 11 Gossamer, so about 5% of the time. I got 3 silk quite often though, about 30% of the time. 2 silk around 50% of the time, and the rest was single silk.
I walked away not quite understanding what the real break down is. But I was wearing full MF gear totaling a little over 100% MF. Considering this aspect, I figure that the 3 silk proc was “rare” as well as the gossamer proc, getting me around a 35% rare rate.
The method is still full of holes and I plan on doing another run soon with all my MF removed to see if I can isolate the factors more.
I’m pretty sure I was getting ~25% gossamer/orichalcum with master’s salvage kits, though, even with white items. They both list a 25% rare material yield but mystic kits definitely seem to fall short of that

Gossamer and Orichalcum make level 80 exotics, Silk and Mithril make level 80 rares

I just tested this with 25 level 80 white rifles, 8 of 25 salvages with a master’s salvage kit yielded orichalcum or ancient wood. Tiny sample size but that seems about right

Even though it’s all chance, there are things you can say for certain. For example, if the chance of yielding rare materials is 25%, then the probability of not getting a rare in 22 salvages, as the original poster did, is 1/561 — pretty unlikely.
Edit: and CTzar’s outcome — 1 or fewer rares in 65 salvages — would have probability one-in-six-million.

so should I be using my Mystic on 70+ whites too? So confused o_O
I think there’s a typo on the Mystic Salvage Kit. On the store it says a certain amount, but on the item itself it only says 10%…unless they’ve changed that in the past week or so. I reported it through the ingame reporter, but I keep forgetting to post it here.
Suffice it to say, I was rather unhappy having bought one when it said “get the best amount of rare materials possible” only to have it arrive and say that it gave a 10% chance of getting rare materials. I need ecto dangnabbit.

Me too. Confused about what items it’s worth it to use Mystic/Master kits on, and what items to use lower kits on.
Is it worth it to use Mystic on white, blues, and greens? Only level 80? Only level 7x-80?
Can you get ectos from those, or only from yellows/oranges? What’s the level minimum? What about for ori, gossamer, and ancient? Is it the same as ectos, or different?

That’s the black lion kit, not the mystic salvage kit. I’ve heard that the black lion kit actually has a much higher rare salvage rate than listed but I haven’t tested it myself

I think there is always a chance to drop higher tier materials than you usually need to produce stuff of that level. For example made with jute can be salvaged and give wool as rare chance. At 80 it is just between silk and gossamer. And for the exotic and rare stuffs the ectoplasm you can get. At the moment I am using the yellow kit(I think for about 16 silver per 25 uses) at the rare and exotic stuff level 70+ because of the ectoplasm.
Anyone knows if white, blue, green stuff can be salvaged to gossamer or the highest leather if it is at 80?
And is it true with the black lion kit having a higher rate? I think it says 100 for recovering upgrades stuff and maybe because of this the other rate for rare stuff is lower and it is intended that way?
When it says 25% chance to get “rarer materials” it does not mean Tier 6 crafting materials (Gossamer, Orichalcum, etc.). Those are considered common crafting materials and are not affected by the type of salvage kit. When it says rarer materials, it means Glob of Ectoplasm and other rarer crafting materials (i.e. better than white quality). I wouldn’t use Mystic/Master salvage kits on anything less than a green item, for whites and blues I simply use basic salvage kits as they give the exact same chance to get Tier 6 crafting materials, and no chance of giving rarer crafting materials.
Black Lion Kit lists a 10% salvage rate, but it’s actually more like 90% chance, and yes, I do use it frequently.
So the rare stuff means the fine materials like totems or other stuff? If it only meant ectolpasm then it would be useless for stuff lower than 70+ yellow. And you can’t use it at white and blue to get totems and stuff like that?

This would be handy information if verified. You have a source for this?

Yeah I’d like to see one too – I’m not saying it’s definitely worth using master’s salvage kits on whites, but when I do use master’s kits on whites I seem to be getting around 25% return on T6 materials, and mystic salvage kits return much less than that
Also, using basic salvage kits on 70+ yellows will give you an ecto much more than 10% of the time
masters’ kits are supposed to be identical to mystic kits as far as performance goes, regardless

That really isn’t how percentages work, for something like that to happen would be almost impossible. Percentages are just that, and the more you do of something, the closer it will be.
For example, prospecting in WoW (Actually, I’m an avid crafter in ever MMO, I love it) but I have quite honestly prospected over 200,000 elementium ore along side similar, yet more obsidium. I get almost exactly what percentage of coloured gem I am suppose to after a huge batch of prospecting. Same with disenchanting and basically, everything that follows the pattern of percentage.
That said, as the OP already stated, his sample size wasn’t very large. He should however still be in the 22-28% range.
Anyone tested this since today’s patch went in? I haven’t been doing a lot of salvaging
I just did a bit more testing. I bought 200 various white cloth armor pieces ranging from lv 70-76 and 4 master salvage kits. I used the master salvage kits on 100 of the pieces and 100 of the charges from my mystic salvage kit. I made sure to divide each level of gear evenly between the two types of salvage kit. The results were uninspiring:
Master salvage kit: 5 items gave gossamer.
Mystic salvage kit: 2 items gave gossamer.
With numbers that low it’s doubtful that the sample size is enough to determine whether there’s actually a difference between the two, but combined with the experience of others it is at least suggestive. And the sample size should be large enough to strongly suggest that neither kit is giving 25% upgraded mats. Maybe level and quality do factor?
