New to crafting (Please help)
If you check the prices of normal versus fast, normal is cheaper.
Rolling totals tell you the prices to each stage starting from the beginning, but not everyone is going to be starting from zero.
[For example: normal jewelcrafting
Tier 5. Levels 300-400
Cost: 3.42.91 gold (Rolling Total: 9.86.04 gold)]
Let’s say you didn’t start using this guide until you were already level 300. It will cost you 3.42.91 gold to get to level 400. To get to level 400 starting from level zero will cost you 9.86.04 gold.
Subtotals also let you plan out your expenses for each stage so you don’t have to do it all in one go.
I personally prefer fast over normal since the time I spend putting offers on the materials needed and the actual crafting I might aswell been out farming the gold-difference back. Or what usually is the case, doing something fun. But if you’re patience, use the Normal ones (Note: Cooking has fast, normal and depends on how many Hearts you’re willing to use, Hearts stand for Karma-vendors unlocked by completing a specific Heart, great if you have map-completion, not so much if you don’t.)
As on how to make money, crafts aren’t that populer to actually make money with, but http://www.gw2spidy.com/ has a crafting section showing you what will make a loss and what will make a profit (aswell as when you search for an item you can see if it’s cheaper to buy or craft.) Very helpful website. The Ascended Materials that are time-gated sell for a small profit usually aswell, and it can level you from 450-475! If you ment in general to afford the crafts to level or something:
-Dungeons
- Nodefarm
- Worldbosses
- Daily and trade in your Laurels for Heavy Crafting Bag (only do this if you have no intention of getting Ascended Trinkets!)
- Champtrains in Frostgorge Sound
This is not put in any particular order, I’d recommend doing something you enjoy how-ever.
Astral explained everything else perfectly.

I suppose that is how we make gold from the TP, we should thank the people who sacrifice profit for convenience.
Hello! I am new to gw2 and am having trouble finding trees to harvest in the Caledon Forest. Can someone please point me in the right direction so I can start gathering wood? Thanks for your time ^.^
It depends on which wood you want to harvest. Caledon is a starter area which will have tier 1 (T1) wood, which is green wood logs. You can chop these down with the cheapest axe, once you have one bought from a merchant and equipped it.
For other tiers of wood, like soft wood, seasoned wood, hard wood (T2/3/4 respectively) then you’ll have to visit different zones which aren’t starter areas. For example, to the north of Caledon is Kessex Hills which is a L15-25 area. Here you’ll find soft wood (T2) more commonly.
Re-reading your post, I’m suspecting you’re only looking for trees in Caledon, so apologies for sidetracking. To do this, you’ll need to search around the entire map (yes this means physically running places). I’ve asked/tried to get all harvestable nodes (trees/ore/foods) more visible on the map when you press M, so you can see them easier. Anet doesn’t want to do this however. So it’s a matter of finding the tree nodes by yourself and having your axe at the ready. I wish I had better news.

Not luck and credit cards.”
Ok Thanks anyway! I thought that might be the case. I have been searching for hours now and haven’t seen one tree to harvest from. It is a bit frustrating but will keep trying.

That was poorly written by me sorry, I ment I take the fast guide, place the offers (which are considerably less in numbers than the normal guide) do something on my 80 that will compensate (and more) for the loss. Whenever my buy-listings are filled, once again I’ll save time than if I’d be putting in all different recipes the Normal guide contains. Time = Money, it’s how people spend the time that makes they key-difference. I still use buy-offers like (almost) everyone else.
Say the Jewelcrafting guide currently; the normal one is 50s less than the fast one. I also know that making the buy-offers and the actual crafting will cost me atleast 5-10 minutes more, so unless you make less than 3-6 gold per hour, the fast guide would be more beneficial. It’s especially important for the cooking ones with the hearts, assuming you haven’t got full map completion. But if you can’t make 3-6 gold per hour, then in this case the Normal Guide would be more benficial.
Fixed in the quote. :p

You can see the icons in your mini map for the different types of gathering nodes. (As mentioned, not th ebig map, but the little map in the bottom right of your screen.) You can see the icons on the wiki, and get a lot more info on them, here: http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Node#Resource_nodes
You simply can’t run around for hours and not find trees to harvest, they are all over the place. Hundreds per map. Just look for the node icons. Once you get close to a harvestable tree, it will be outlined in yellow and labeled “Aspen Sapling” or “Ekku Sapling” or whatever kind of tree it is (different kinds of trees give different tiers of materials). Same for ore and cooking ingredient nodes. Hope that helps.
Ok Thanks anyway!

A couple of tips on harvesting (and not just wood):
- You can zoom in and out the mini-map and look for resource nodes (but they only show up when you are relatively close….zoom out maybe one or two mouse wheel clicks).
- You can hover over the node on the mini-map and see what the resource is. This is not very important in the starter areas (as you only have one of each type of resource nodes) but in higher areas, being able to know what node is in what direction is invaluable.
- When you get closer to a node, zoom in closer and the node will display a small ^ or v if the node is above or below your current location. This also works for other mini-map icons (NPCs, story mission stars, etc.) and will help you know if things are below you in a cave or above you on a ledge. This is also VERY helpful underwater.
- If you are going out havesting, don’t forget to check your tools so you don’t run out halfway across the map. There is no reason to buy LOTS of spares (as you will earn some as story mission rewards). but make a habit of checking your inventory to see if you have the tools needed to harvest in the zones your are traveling to.
- Consider spending the gems on a set of permanent harvesting tools. I would never have suggested this before they became account bound items (they used to be soulbound to just a single character), but now that you can pass them between your characters they can be quite convenient.

Permanent harvesting tools? Are all three available, and how much are they?
Updated every Monday
The permanent harvesting tools are not all available at one time. Currently they have the Frost Wasp axe and I think that’s the only one for sale right now, for 1000 gems. You can check the gem store the next time to see what they are offering.
