Any combination of weaponsmith, huntsman, leather worker, jeweler, and cooking works. I personally went with huntsman and cooking, but I have the other crafts available on other characters (each of my characters has a unique craft and all of them have cooking as a second craft since it’s very easy to level once you’ve grabbed all the account-bound ingredients).

You don’t have to choose right away, and with your other character slots you can easily have one of each crafting professions, so if you decide you want something else you can just use an alt (or just switch professions on your main).

If you eventually want ascended armor or weapons, I’d suggest going for those instead. They aren’t necessary (really it depends on what your build is) and they are expensive/time intensive, so make them a long term goal instead of something to focus on. Technically for your profession leatherwork (for armor) and then huntsmen or weapon smith makes the most sense, if you wanted to craft your own weapons. The down side, on my first character I had the problem of not having enough materials (through normal gathering) to keep my crafting level up to date with my actual level. So it wasn’t well after I hit 80 did I actually hit 400 in my crafts to give me gear with the stats I wanted.

Also if you are trying to make money, it’s hard pressed to do that with both of those professions. Most people go for ascended trinkets with fractals/laurels/guild missions and don’t have a use for jewelry. As for cooking, the vast majority of items sell more to a vendor than to other players.

That being said, there really isn’t a wrong choice. Just go with what you think would be the most fun. If you find you don’t like it you can always just switch to another profession (and use an alt to cover that one if you decide you want to get it at a later date).

ranger equipment will be made from leatherworker and huntsman/weaponsmith
then again, you won’t be able to make level-appropriate items while leveling, so I wouldn’t suggest going by that :P

I love my ranger. It was my first character. Don’t listen to the people when they say pick something else. If you have fun that’s all that matters! It wasn’t until I came on to these forums that I saw every one complains about everything!! For my ranger I choose huntsman and leather worker.

I am a hardcore casual player at best!!
Always up wind from my prey. I want them to smell my farts!

If this is your first character, go huntsman/leatherworker, as they will be a bit more useful to you while leveling… and yes, you can/will get enough materials to craft as you go.

If you already have materials to craft because you’ve played other characters, it really doesn’t matter.

Anecdotally – It seems my leather/cloth workers all get metal armor and weapons from mob drops and vice-versa for my weapon/armor crafters… RNG hates me. YMMV.
