Why have they dropped? Is there a way to craft them or still obtain them?
They dropped because everyone who hoarded and speculated are impatient and dumping them.
Mainly, noob speculators

I would argue that noob speculators stopped buying them as well.
I dumped mine yesterday when prices were highish just because I was broke and needed to dump something to make some money. Not that I had a whole lot of cores anyway, basically just the 20 or so I got from the event (minus the 10 synergetics I used for my own blade pack). Still made about 60g on them though, so I was pretty happy.
Also partially because someone pointed out that the “new shiny feel” from the blade packs is wearing off, which I feel may be true to some degree at least. And supply of the cores seems like it ought to be pretty high in general considering how many I got and factoring in that many people farmed the events more than I did (and have better luck than I did). So I didn’t feel like risking holding them. Especially not with speculation that the blade shards might be tradable for assault cores, which I do think there’s a chance of, since the devs have obviously gone out of their way to ensure Blade Shards are still obtainable by making them drop from Aetherblades, farmable from the Sprocket Generator, and so it follows that the might make cores obtainable as well.
In essence, I dumped them because I needed money and because I don’t have much confidence in them as a long-term investment. Not that I’m a particularly good with investing in this game, probably more the opposite (maybe I’d fall into that noob category Vol mentioned, heh) but there ya go.
I did what Electro did for those reasons but also because I understand that living story rewards are ALWAYS going to be a spiffy new backpiece and investing in something that gets outdone/outdated every few weeks is futile. Plus, these things were extremely fugly and only good for cheap exotic-tier any-stat selectables.
Prices almost always drop after an event as players offload what they don’t need after the event is over. There is also usually a surge the day before the end as people buy enough to supplement what they have gathered themselves in order to do whatever it is that they want to do with it.
I didn’t sell mine because i wanted to keep 10 of them (and the type i have the most is only at 8 ) so that i could use them later on, and since i’m not sure which color to go for i couldn’t sell any of them…but i also found out that the ‘regular’ blades are purple’ish? At least i’ve seen a screenshot where they looked like that. I thought they would be not shiny at all, so why is ‘everyone’ trying to get 10 of those cores? That purple’ish doesn’t look so bad.

The regular Ascended spinal blades glow yellow, not purple. The icon is purple (for some reason) though. You can see what all of them look like on the Dulfy page. http://dulfy.net/2014/02/18/gw2-spinal-blade-backpiece/
As for why everone wants the colored ones instead of the default… people just like red, blue, or green better than yellow I guess. Or perhaps its because the default Ascended one does glow yellow, but the metal bits are still grey, where the colored ones actually paint the metal as well. Or maybe people just view the colored ones as the “final version” since it requires an extra step and think the regular Ascended is “unfinished”.
I expect the prices for core to be similiar to the catchers backslot items in a few months. Investing in power core are a long term investment anyways. It will be awhile until the supply drops below 100 and becomes very profitable.
I swear i’ve seen a purple screenshot ._. but actually i’ve seen those yellow in game and was wondering what i was missing, now i get it. If they had a more intense glow probably i would prefer them; at first i was aiming for red but the glow itself seems less shiny then blue or green ones, so now i’m just not sure which one would be better lol.
I don’t find them that pretty since i don’t like mecha-like stuff, so maybe i just let them at the normal yellow version and save some gold, waiting for a chance to get another ascended backpiece from some other event later :x
I would not be surprised to find the mysterious vendor who will take blade shards will also be selling power cores. We will see when he/she shows up I guess…
I sold them all right after I looted them at least some coins from those ugly expensive scraps
Yeah, I sold mine mainly because I am not interested in coloring my back piece and if I want a color the ascended yellow would match what I got anyway.
I sold my spare Power Cores a few days before the end of the event. Made a tidy 30g profit. Then bought one more spare Static Core which I was short on when prices tumbled after the patch was over.
I do think it’s entirely possible that ANet will include new ways to get the different Power Cores since Blade Shards are staying (players will definitely want to customise their look, so why pass up an extra chance for gold/mat sinks?), so my advice would be to sell soon unless you’re rich enough to absorb the potential loss and not be bothered.
