Pre-500 Advice
Cheapest is to discover everything and not repeat any recipes.
Cheapest is to discover everything and not repeat any recipes.
That’s very broad. Just discover from 400-500? Refine nothing?
up to 425 is refining and inscriptions
425-450 exotic research
450-470 refining stuff with new recipes (very, very slow)
470-500 exotic research
You might be able to make some cheap sharpening stones or research other recipes but to be honest you shouldn’t be worrying about coin if you’re making ascended. If money is tight then don’t do it yet. It is a big money sink, big time sink, and you’ve got to be willing to throw every type of resource into it to get things done.

Thanks. This is the sort of general layout I was looking for.
I don’t need the absolute cheapest method. If it’s going to take ridiculous amounts of time, I’d rather just spend more. I definitely have the gold (1,200), I’ve just read that spending 200g per profession isn’t necessary unless you want to get to 500 as fast as possible. Anything even up to 100g wouldn’t bother me.

There are websites that tell you exactly what to do which is why I did to go into detail.

I’d appreciate a link to one.
All of the guides I’ve found have been focused on speed as opposed to efficiency, and cost around 200g per profession, which I keep hearing is not necessary.
I am slowly leveling weaponsmithing on the cheap.
400-425
Refine ori and ancient wood. Harvest this yourself and use a crafting booster.
425-450
Here you need to discover/make some exotics. Seems celestial recipes do not give the same amount of XP as the traditional T6 inscriptions do, however, if you already have a bunch of those refined crystals around, then crafting celestial is cheaper than using T6 creature parts. Again use the T6 mats you already have.
450-?? I am currently at 465 and been refining all the various ascended ore I have collected and crafting the 2 time-gated components. So far I have refined 19 stacks of Bloodstone ore, 3 of Dragonite ore and some of the other material you get from JP chests and the like..
So far, I have not needed to buy anything, apart from some shards (used karma) and that crafting material from the master weaponsmith vendor.

I raised my Huntsman craft to 500 last night and this is basically how I did it. Total cost was 70g but I was short on Ori, Ancient wood and Ectos. With a little more patience and planning I could have easily gotten that cost down to 40 to 50g.
Thanks.
So where do the Toxic recipes fit into this? I’ve already got the Torment Sigil and Maintenance Oil recipes from PvP boxes in the past four days.
EDIT: Never mind. Got’cha.

Get to 415 crafting rares. You can even sell greatswords, staves, and a few others at a profit.
After 415 follow the advice elsewhere in this thread.
Eh. I did it by making exotics, and salvaging them for dark matter. Perhaps not the cheapest way to do it, but in the end it looks like I can recover the closes in about 2 weeks of modest TP work. I got my levels, bonus progress on a second profession towards 500, and the dark matter I needed for a shiny bow.

If you’ve prepared properly (and you’ve started to by looking at the screenies) then it should only cost you 40-50g all up going from 400-500. My ele did this with artificer but spent way more than needed due to being very under-prepared, but my ranger maxed 400-500 huntsman with about a quarter of the expenditure. I’ve started out getting weaponsmith done on my warrior, so far at 425 which was done by refining ancient wood and ori —> ingots.
GW2 crafts.net does make things go a bit smoother, however it’s not all that accurate for best use of materials and inscriptions, and even less so if you’re using a crafting booster (highly recommended), which they don’t yet account for. But having maxed 500 with 2 crafts so far, the 3rd is easier and will take less time and even less advice from gw2crafts.net… it’s all about re-discovering recipes, and making stuff while they’re still orange in the list (max experience gain from them).

Not luck and credit cards.”

This was exactly my initial impression. I’ve used gw2crafts a lot in the past, but I knew it wasn’t offering the cheapest method, which is why I made this thread.
I have a stack of crafting boosters, too, yes. I’ll use them, for sure.
Get to 415 crafting rares. You can even sell greatswords, staves, and a few others at a profit.
Definitely not. 400-425 should be pure (self-farmed) t6 mats refinement if you go for lowest cost. Save those undiscovered green and yellow recipes for later, they may not give too much craft xp individually, but they do add up when used in bulk.
Remember, remember, 15th of November
I have weaponsmith, Huntsman and Artificer all at 500. This is how i did it. I crafted Vision of the Mist for my Mesmer before beginning so i have enough Orichalcum Ingot to craft so the three profession was already at 425 before i start. Anyway the principle stay the same. Refine Orichalcum and Ancient wood until you get to level 425 is a good way and really cheep since you gonna use them to level up your crafting after.
In theory you need to craft 24 exotic weapons (discovery 24 different recipe, don’t craft 24 of the same recipe). In practice with my crafting booster 21-22 Exotic was enough. With Artificer my first to reach 500, i refined my empyreal, bloodstone dust and dragonite ore. You need to refine those anyway so do it while it give you XP, but 1 problem. It work for the first profession and you can save 1 or 2 exotic, but after that you will have enough refined ascended material for all the weapons you want (except for the Dragonite) so do you really want to craft (and pay) for refined material that you could never use or use in about a year.
I did my own little guide to find what combination of weapons/inscription where the less costly and i take really a short time to do that by your own. In the end, if you by everythings it will cost you about 120-150 gold. But for me it cost me about 100 gold to get all three to 500, mainly because i had to buy all the ectos since i used all mine on my Vision of the Mist and 77 Clovers for my second legendary. The rest is pretty easy to get. About 15 of each fine crafting material and between 600 and 1500 ori ore/ancient log for each crafting profession. This is costly if you but it all, but myself i got 7 character and i can get 50 ori and wood in about 15-20min each day so it wasn’t a problem.
For artificer 425-450, I discovered a coupple of exotics and mostly potions. I crafted a stack of outlaw potions in addition to discovering other potions.

Just make exotics that sell at a profit. Since you have a high capital you can craft all your exotics in the 20-30g price range and sell them for a profit. Granted this will only be valid for about 6 hours after I post it before everyone does it and the prices bottom out.
You can easily make 20-30g crafting to 500 if you just make things that sell at a profit.
I found that discovering 19 exotics (while using crafting booster) got me from 425 to 500.
For my first profession, I did 400 → 425 with refining, then 425 → 440 or so by making superior potions, then 440 → 450 by discovering exotics, then 450 → 475 by refining ascended materials (took a while), then 475 → 500 by discovering exotics. I ended up discovering about 17 exotics this way.
discovering exotics is by far the most costly part of this. all the other parts give you a profit or are required, but each exotic will cost you about 6g to discover (8g price – 2g sale). so 114g vs. 102g. It’s hard to make this much cheaper.

Forge & more JSON recipes
Cheapest way:
400-425 refining ori(then sell back the ingots to TP if you don’t need them)
425-450 discover sigils/potions (discover a few exotics if you REALLY have to)
450-470 refining ascended mats
470-490 discover EVERYTHING you haven’t yet, blues, masterwork, rares (especially rares)
490-500 Craft 3-4 exotics
I’ve done all 3 crafts with 0 materials in bank, and used about ~80g. Also worth mentioning that I sold all rares I crafted, but you can throw them in the forge or salvage if you like. You get a kittenton of rares, selling them yields no loss.
Also, if you craft exotics, check TP prices first. Some exotics can be sold for nearly the crafting cost (Rabid’s, Soldier’s, etc).
