If you need a lower level mat especially leather or fabric you have a hard time as level 80 as you mostly get higher level items dropped even in lower level areas.

Would be handy if you can manually select you preferred drop-level, especially in WvW and EotM.

I think its actually working as intended because it gives incentive to play lower level characters. New players, that level their first toon, have an advantage over lvl 80 players to gather those resources, so they get more gold for their loot.
I wouldnt object a gem store item to determine your loot level range but i wouldnt like, if everybody can just chose it for free.
Personally, i just collect all my champ bags and open them with a character in t4 level range, so all the blues and greens that he gets out of the bags, salvage into linen, rugged leather, platinum and hard wood. As far as I know, the droprate for precursors and named lvl 80 exotics is not influenced by the lvl of the character that opens them but the kind of lootbag.

If they actually WANT to increase the ability of LVL 80s to obtain lower tier materials, the solution is more loot bags and less item drops (maybe just in lower level areas?).

Maybe add a guaranteed loot bag from Vets while slightly increasing the chance for a loot bag from normal enemies?

There is a thread suggesting a way to downgrade mats in the forge, seems like a related concept, and one that I like.

I open all my champ boxes on a little 25 toon that I leveled with scrolls since I already have all classes at lvl 80s. It works pretty good since it only changes the gear to at level gear and doesn’t give you dust. At lvl 25 I get soft wood, wool, and iron…..works for me.

I agree that would be a viable solution but they have to be careful about the quantities as letting me turn 10 Silk into 100 Linen would have significant economic consequences…..
