Question about gathering tools.
I’ve noticed that if I use much higher tools than required I get a few more occasionally from each swing.
From what I’ve heard, no there isn’t. But if what the previous poster said is correct, how much higher? It may very well not be worth the increased cost for the occasionally few more.
You can also get other materials. Cinnamon sticks and walnuts from trees and stones from ore. You will occasionally get an extra log or ore but that seems less common than getting other stuff. IIRC, I have on rare occasions found stuff that doesn’t make much game sense, like loot bags or even weapons.
I do not believe what Lil Puppy is correct at all ….see there is this thing called WvW and there is a payoff if your world is winning, the rewards are called Power of the Mists http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Power_of_the_Mists seen here which has a gathering reward…also look here http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Gathering_tool and nothing says that bigger tools equal more gathered . It just notates that if you try to gather from a node ranked higher than the tool you might get ruined pieces.
After getting several ruined ore chunks and plant fibers due to me forgetting to swap tools, I just decided to use the higher level tools. I only buy iron tools now, as I’m playing through areas with iron and silver and soft wood trees and so forth. More expensive, less frustrating for me. Not only do I not have to worry about getting ruined materials, but inventory is easier to manage as well.
I have not noticed any difference when returning to lower level zones. It seems like I’m still getting the same number of materials from each node, with the same chances of additional materials (cinnamon sticks, malachite/amber/et cetera). The durability of the tool is the same — an iron pick used to mine three copper ore loses three durability just like it would for mining three iron ore.
Of course this is anecdotal evidence, but I would still be surprised if better tools gave better results for lower level nodes.
There is no advantage to using a higher level tool, except that you don’t have to carry around multiple sets of tools.
