Q:

When using a salvage kit, what does it even mean when it has a 10% chance of rarer items?

I’ve been testing out with the Crude Salvage Kit and Basic Salvage Kit, and I have not observed any different items, except for Ectoplasm when salvaging rares.

So what gives? Does it really make any difference whatsoever? If let’s say I was salvaging Worn Rags, does it give me more Linen then Silk?

Such as master kits primarily give elder wood, mithril ore, and silk scraps (on 80 gear). They improve the chance of getting items from the next tier.

I could also be mistaken and it refers to ectos only. I never really paid much attention to this or tried to keep track.

I have done some extensive research on this and as far as i can tell, the tooltips are either bugged because the different salvage kits dont give the advertised chance of rarer (higher tier) common mats or each item also has an internal chance of salvaging into rarer mats.

I believe the latter to be the case and for most items, like armor, weapons and t6 salvage items (rags, scraps etc) it seems to be around a 10% chance to get a t6 mat instead of a t5 mat. This was obvious because even the crude kit which, according to its tooltip has a 0% chance, also yielded t6 mats at a 10% rate. When salvaging with masterkits, which has a 25% chance for rarer mats, the t6 mat salvage rate was more like 12.5% (10%x1.25).

it’s closer to: base 10% chance of higher tier, then crude adds 0% to that, basic adds 10% for a total of 11%, master adds 25% for a total of 12.5%, etc.
Wanze’s link was a wonderful discusson on this.

So there is a base 10% chance of rarer mats, and normal salvage kit is actually 20%?

Master salvage kit is 35%? Is this true?

Wanze measured (1000 salvages each):
crude = 10.5%
salvage-o-matic = 12.5%
basic = 13%
fine = 12.3%
journeyman = 15.1%
master = 15.1%
mystic = 17.8%

No, a master salvage kit would raise the base 10% by 25%, so 12.5%, not 35%.

However, there is no official statement from Anet on this so my assessment is based on personal research.
It also seemed that lower tier salvage materials seemed to have a higher internal base chance to salvage the higher tier mat than 10%.

For example, frayed rags salvage into cotton or linen scraps but if you would use a crude kit, which according to the tooltip has 0% chance to salvage a rarer material, you would still get linen scraps 30% of the time.
