I would like to know what are the pros and cons of salvaging rares after the latest patch. Do they have a better chance than fine & masterwork of dropping MF? Or exotic mats?

Rares and exotics don’t drop Essence of Luck at all. Only blues, greens, and ectoplasm.

That said, Rares do drop Ectoplasm, so you can get Essence from them indirectly if you turn around and salvage those.

Not sure what you mean when you’re talking about “exotic mats”. If its lodestones or fine crafting mats (like claws, fangs, ect) then no, nothing salvaged will give those. If you’re talking about the new Dark Matter mats for crafting Ascended gear, then also no, only Exotics drop that.

The only things you can get from salvaging rares are Globs of Ectoplasm, metal / cloth / leather / wood (usually Mithril and such, occasionally the T6 materials like Orichalcum), and whatever upgrade the item has in it (Runes, Sigils, ect).

Keep in mind that salvaging ectos seems to give a very large amount of luck essences (though I don’t know the actual number, just that it seems to be very high). So since you get, what, .8-.9(?) ectos per rare on average, they can end up being very good sources of luck. Of course you may still prefer the cash, from the rare itself or from the ectos.
