Here’s something I’ve always wondered… Why do Iron and Steel Ingots take 3 ore pieces while other ingots require 2 ores to craft? Same goes with Soft Wood Planks. 4 logs while other planks take 3.
Anyone know why it’s set up like that? It’s been bothering me ever since I started crafting.

There used to be a massive oversupply of these items. The increased number of materials needed to refine them was ArenaNet’s attempt to burn that excess supply and make the raw materials valuable.

This. After that, they simply didnt bother to adjust it again. I think they are quite fine with the high prices of iron/soft wood right now because it means that new players, who start their first character, get a little more gold from gathering.

That they then regret selling when they hit 80 and look at how many they will need?

Low lvl characters actually get more common crafting mats of the tier related to the zone when playing than lvl 80ies through salvaging, as their gear drops more often represent that tier.

Thank you for the replies, everyone!
Should’ve guessed as much the moment they increased the crafting costs for Silk and Hard Leather. I’m just wondering if they’ll do the same to Mithril/Elder Wood as there’s alot of those on the market, too.

Those were never as kittenilk. Probably because there is always someone using piles of them to make rares for throwing into the forge.

Mithril and elder wood (T5 materials) are just more commonly gathered than most other materials, as it’s the natural habitat for most L80’s to be in those zones. These materials are more commonly used for crafting higher-level (rare) weapons for use in the Mystic Forge, and thus the supply of these is relatively in-check with the demand.

Examples:

  • Frostgorge Sound (claw of jormag event) mithril and elder wood nodes are most prevalent, but with 2 nodes each of ori and ancient wood (T6 materials). Reason: it’s a L70-80 zone and you won’t find lesser-tiered materials there. Go southeast of Earthshake waypoint to Fireheart Rise (60-70), however, and you’ll find T4 nodes (platinum and hard wood). All because it’s a lesser-levelled zone.
  • Southsun Cove (karka areas) again, mithril and elder wood prevail here, with occasional ancient and ori nodes available. There used to be an ori vein near a champ spawn but this was nerfed ages ago. Reason: L80 zone.
  • Orrian areas. Straits of Devastation, Malchor’s Leap and Cursed Shore. Vast expanses of rotting death and age-old destruction from being under the water. A metric ton of mithril and elder wood nodes and also heaps of ori and Orrian (as opposed to ancient) nodes to be found. Reason: L70-75, 75-80 and 80 areas respectively.

Similarly, the drops from these zones (armours in particular) and the contents of bags of loot dropped from mobs resulted in a lot of silk and hard leather. This created a huge oversupply of these materials before Ascended crafting came about.

So, while I agree that lower-level areas are bountiful with iron, soft wood, etc. and whatever drops in those areas can also be salvaged for similar materials, I disagree with the method in which they have chosen to regulate the supply, and thus, use. If Ascended crafting weren’t being used, then yes perhaps there may still be an excess of these materials on the market, and their actions justified. But while there are {20(T2)-20(T3)-10(T4)-(ascended material)} recipes available (and this isn’t something that’s temporary), there will continue to be heavy demand on these items that were once vastly undertraded and disused.
