Q:
Soft wood plank
It’s because when the game was launched (most people were lvl’ing up) there was an insane supply of these logs. To counter it, Anet made changed the recipe from 3 to 4.

AKA newer players are punished for not playing earlier.
new palyers are not punished cause price higher so they get more gold for what they farm
They are also not punished because to new players, 4 logs per plank IS the norm. If anything, it’s more a punishment for old players.
Only harvest enough soft wood to get you to the next tier of crafting mats. Any you harvest after that can be sold to get the best of both worlds.
Due to how the node locations are set up some places are better to gather than others.
The ideal locations are multiple nodes “near” a WP. There are a couple of these around in Gendarran Fields, Harathi Hinterlands and Fields of Ruin for soft wood. There might be some in Brisban Wildlands as well but I don’t spend enough time there to know.

^ Basically that. With the introduction of Ascended crafting though, demand for Soft Wood has also increased dramatically. I’m still hopeful that ANet will reduce Soft Wood Planks down to 3 logs again.

Softwood nodes are plentiful
Try Diessa Plateau, Kessex Hills, Snowden Drifts, Lornar’s Pass as well.
Yes this is totally nuts cause you spend a proportionate amount of time collecting the other mats and then all of a sudden you need 25% more.

There is boink all for softwood in Diessa and where there is, you’re getting chased by wolves all the kitten time. Same in Snowden. Kessex is toxic these days and not a lot of fun to play unless you’re there for the Toxic stuff.
As for Lornar’s? I’ve had more fun walking around an Ikea shop that forces you to walk in one direction only, for the entire time you’re there. At least Ikea sells Swedish meatballs.
Field of Ruin isn’t bad, but farming is boring. I also run Dredgehaunt for iron ore and seasoned wood, then sell off the excess seasoned wood to buy soft wood.
After saying all that, I hate farming and this is not how I ever wanted to play this game.
I have an exxcess supply of soft wood, in fact Season Wood is the new soft wood. If you dont have enough soft wood, your simply not looking in the right spots or just …lazy i guess. I had a great farm in Diessa/Kessex where after farming my two “Routes” on those maps id have about 90 soft wood logs, aka 20+ Planks. The repsawn rate is literally like 30 mins, so if I wanted I could farm them hardcore but I did it maybe twice a day at max. I have more than enough soft wood to last me….Seasoned though….ugh./
Well folks, the issue aren’t in the node farming but simply the amount needed to make planks. All other wood need three logs to make one piece of plank while soft wood requires four. Is it really fair since it’s now a part of the ascended crafting? I think not but interested in other peoples opinions aswell and hopefully A-net see this thread and reduce the amount to three logs alongside all other types of wood.
Because the wood is so soft, it takes more to compress into a plank. The biological make up of soft wood producing trees stems from the fertile Tyrian soil in which they grow. Couple it with the extra moisture in the air in those areas, and you have a recipe for over saturated, mushy trees.
balsa wood is a hardwood hard vs. soft is what type of tree it comes from, not it’s physical description.

My apologies. I’m not tree expert, so I’m going off of what I assume. Perhaps we should ask Trahearne for confirmation. He hasn’t been doing much since we saved his leafy behind.

The point was not about the existence of soft wood in a particular map but the existence of soft wood that is frequently clustered around a nearby WP. The clustering enables gathering a decent number of logs without having to waste too much time running around.
Crikey, one player is afraid of a few wolves in a low-level map, another wants all the wood nodes clustered around one wp. Next you will want all the wood auto-loaded into your bank when you log on …
And yes, the existence of nodes is very much to the point of discussion. The reason why softwood planks require 4 logs is because there are nodes in so many maps!
Diessa Plateau is probably the best map for softwood and iron ore, both of which you need plenty of. There is a permanent rich iron node in the same place, everyday. Most of the softwood is located in two areas close to wp’s for the particularly lazy players. One is in the west close to the rich iron node, the other is the east where the vet oakhearts wander. Furthermore, if you run (use a speed booster if this is so painful) along the south road between these two areas, you will find even more iron ore and softwood.
Crikey, one player is afraid of a few wolves in a low-level map…
You have obviously completely misunderstood my comment. I’m not afraid of wolves, I just don’t want to deal with them ever, just like I don’t ever want to have to farm mats with my gaming time.
“Play the game the way you want”…
Would it really kill this game if I could purchase Ascended items with Badges of Honor or Karma?

You do get that Ascended crafting requires this material, right? It DOES effect the highest level of crafting.
Nobody is being “punished” (what a ridiculous way to look at everything). They did change the raw requirements early in the game due to the over abundance of this material being available. It is harvestable in more zones in the game than any other wood resource node.
Why they have NOT changed it back IS a valid question, however.
…..

I wouldn’t say it would kill it, but it would effectively remove a major long term goal from a lot of players lists….and that would not help it one bit. Nobody is NOT allowing you to play how you want….that misquoted statement does not say, “Obtain the best gear in the game (that is not actually needed) any way you want..”.
To be honest, I’m guessing that eventually there will be other methods to obtain Ascended gear, but for now, it needs to be a rarity item that is difficult to obtain and presents a valid long term goal to those that want it. It is certainly not needed (sans very high level Fractals) to play 98% of the games content.

I dunno. I DO agree with Herr that WvW-only players should not be forced to do PvE content to get Ascended gear if they want to remain at the top of their game. Being able to purchase Ascended gear with Badges SHOULD be included, in my opinion.
That said, isn’t it possible to accumulate the mats needed for Ascended doing only WvW? Dragonite/Empyreal/Bloodstone can all be acquired in WvW, and all necessary materials harvested. I think the only item that can’t be acquired in WvW is Obsidian Shards, unless there’s a WvW vendor that sells it that I’m not aware of.
i don’t view it as punishment for late comer to the game, in fact it gives them a way to make more gold by creating demand for the wood logs.
