“Obtaining a legendary should be done through legendary feats…
Not luck and credit cards.”
In the effort of unlocking a few more skins, I’ve been getting on my crafter alts and doing some catchup work. I have since noticed that the prescribed recipe for a Steel Axe (using all Steel and Seasoned components) results as a humble Iron Axe of a higher crafting level (150), instead of (75) as with my other iron axe.
Have Anet made a boo-boo here? Are there supposed to be any legitimate Steel axes and not this big gaping hole in between Iron and Darksteel?
It’s an Iron Axe because that is the skin. The iron and steel weapons have the same skin. The darksteel ones have a slightly … darker look.
Maces, greatswords, daggers, shields, etc. all have a different skin, even if the icon is essentially the same. I was able to unlock all of the above in their different constructions. Steel however, seems to be the only odd one out. It becomes an Iron (x) whenever it’s crafted, and the skin is still Iron so it’s known.
So if Iron and Steel weps have the same skin I think it’s a glaring oversight by the devs. Why isn’t there a steel version to unlock?
The entire 3rd tier of weapons has the same skins as the second tier. Seasoned Wood weapons have Soft Wood skins. Steel weapons use Iron. This was true even before the wardrobe.
This doesn’t explain why they wouldn’t have a different skin. Why bother even having a 3rd tier of craftable weapons if the skin was going to be the same as the 2nd, and every other tier’s is a different skin?
Makes no sense.

Because of different stats.
Maybe they thought iron and steel look the same? Kinda like we have Hard Wood that is actually from soft wood trees and vice versa.
Looks like ANet agrees with you.
Steel and Seasoned Wood weapons are now properly named and have a new set of skins associated with them.
I checked and the Steel ones have a golden hue over the same design. Puzzling, steel doesn’t usually come out bronze in appearance, but maybe it’s a Tyrian finishing wash?
Brass cladding, maybe?
Well, I crafted all the new Steel/Seasoned weapons for completion’s sake, but yeah, the weird gold/yellow colour is quite bizarre.
It depends on the temperature when tempering the steel.
