Still Too Much Thick Leather
With the addition of Ascended Crafting the demand for silk scraps went up considerably, yet the demand for Leather didn’t go up at all. There’s almost 8 million Thick Leather Sections sitting on the TP going for minimum price and not a single buy order. The amount of Thick Leather Section sinks needs to go up. Maybe require more for ascended equipment, maybe new armor skins requiring a generous leather sink, just something to make Thick Leather Sections useful instead of just wasted inventory space.
Supply of the lower tier leather ran out, so no one can use the T5 leather.
Exactly. What we need is more supply of t2-t4, not less supply of t5. It’s exactly the thinking OP proposes that led to the current prices of silk – we don’t need a repeat of that.

But if thick leather demand don’t go up. The flippers can’t flip thick leather.
Think of the flippers!

I heard swimming all summer long makes flippers stronk! No leather needed…

I only really play my Guardian, so I don’t have much experience with leather other than I had enough to make a bunch of bowstrings when leveling Huntsman and Leatherworker. According to GW2Spidy the price of leather is about equivalent to the price of ore so if people wanted to craft leatherworker, they would.
Cost to level crafts: (according to gw2crafts.net)
Weaponsmith – 20 gold
Armorsmith – 20 gold
Tailoring – 20 Gold
Huntsman – 17 Gold
Leatherworker – 17 Gold
Jewelcrafting – 8 Gold
Artificing – 7 Gold
Cooking – 4 to 2 gold
I know gw2crafts.net isn’t the most accurate, but leatherworker is currently the cheapest of all the armor disciplines out there. If people wanted to level it, they would. I just leveled huntsman to completion, and a good chunk of my XP came from refining leather into bowstrings, so in my experience it’s never had a problem with supply and it’s not like I was going out searching for the leather. The last thing I want is something like what happened with Silk Scraps to happen again, but there’s a problem when 8 million Thick Leather Sections are just sitting on the TP.
no one cares if there is 8 million leather on the trading post. but i think most people care that they can’t afford silk.

No one cared that there were 4 million silk scraps on the tp for vendor value in November either.

A-net will eventually start to care if a item has no value and is to abundant. Look at silk or any of the special event currency. Also, A-net added luck to blue/green items to give them more value. Now you can profit from selling blue/greens on TP instead of them just another vendor item like whites.

Perhaps it’s time to introduce MF demotion recipes?

No. It boggles me why you think so.

It would just be a logical way to spread price disparity across different material tiers. Tier 5 leather is oversupplied; Tier 4 leather is undersupplied. A demotion recipe would bring the two together very quickly. Long-term, it would ensure that no material tier ever becomes oversupplied or undersupplied as long as there is demand for the finished product (Ascended gear, which I think is in a pretty good spot for time/money investment as a long-term hook to keep players playing).
Of course, the question is whether it’s actually enough of an issue that ANet would need to do something about it. I doubt it’s high priority, but as Ulion pointed out, ANet has taken steps in the past to address oversupply, so it could happen.
In any case, all of this doesn’t really affect me personally since my playstyle ensures that I have sufficient materials of the various tiers for my own needs without needing to turn to the TP. (Although I do often buy up cheap crafting components if they’re cheaper to obtain on the TP than crafting them myself.)

exactly. Are people just sadistic?
Oh items are cheap, let us complain and hope it’ll be expensive so people can’t afford nothing.
I’m much happier when silk is 8 copper instead of 1.97 silver
How about using that for making rare gear and salvage for ecto’s?

I’m not suggesting it shoot up to 1.97, but as it is I’m pretty much deleting leather out of my inventory. Until I used about 4 stacks to get 25 levels on Huntsman, junk items were worth more to me than leather. That’s bad. I’d rather it sit at 15 copper (a small amount higher) and fluctuate a bit like everything else instead of 8 million sections just sitting on the TP. Why you think it’s good that so much of it goes unused is beyond me. Demotion would be the best possible thing that ArenaNet could do to fix this problem.

I’d rather have a commodity collector NPC (remember the Zephyr Sanctum?) Who will accept a full stack of any type of common commodity (those with white name labels like Thick Leather Sections) in exchange for a loot bag filled with 5-10 random uncommon or better goods.
Let me use Thick Leather Sections as gambling tokens! At least that would be more interested than vendoring them.

And craft something for a profit with them. Or make 18 slot bags for yourself and your alts.

The value of those items seems to be derived from the other ingredients so you could have gotten about the same just selling those without wasting any time crafting.
The satchels also seem like a gamble.
I’m actually happy with the current price of thick leather considering some of the alternatives.
Tp is maintained by players, why would A-Net try to alter something within it?

They’ve already done that multiple times already(silk, crystalline dust, probably other stuff I am forgetting) so I don’t think that argument works.
I want to know if the OP bought a bunch of leather before he post it.
If you have too much of something just vendor it.
I rather the economy have a surplus of materials. So things are cheap. I’m not too happy with the other tier6 mateiral price.
Replacing the damask with elonian leather in the ascended insignias while leaving everything else alone probably wouldn’t be that bad.
Having items that are supposed to be equal in value not actually be anywhere near equal in value isn’t really a good thing. It’s like having one class that is great at everything while another is terrible at everything.

Why would I buy a bunch of leather? It’s filling up my inventory as it is for crying out loud lol.

I’m not sure how many I have. Maybe 80 stack? it’ll run out fast anyway if you keep converting it for the ecto daily.
hey people say the same about silk. If I buy more, I’d be a millionaire now.
