So why can we still not put superior sigils and runes in the mystic forge? I understand that them being the highest tier, it would be silly to try to put them in to make a higher one, but since the forge rarely does that for them anyway (upgrading via forge with runes/sigils is incredibly unreliable and low chance of success) surely they could allow for throwing some in for a chance at a different flavor of rune/sigil. Just my 2 cents. I’m honestly sick of how unreliable the forge is in the first place and would rather it not be in the game at all, but since we’re stuck with it might as well get some more (potential) usefulness out of it.

You could do that for about a month after release, then they changed it.
Its good how it is, you are probably angry because you bought a bunch of cheap superior runes and sigils with the intend to put them into the mystic forge in order to get an expensive one back.
You also have a 20% chance to upgrade tiers in the mf, if you put upgrade components or gear in it, i dont think thats a low chance.
As you said, it’s at the highest tier and we can’t get anything out of it anymore.
Now I don’t have any clue on how Anet programs their stuff, so I’m just making assumptions here:
They use a template for mystic forge runes/sigils.
It probably follows a generic formula where you insert 4 of X tier and have a % chance to get 1 X tier mat or a % chance to get 2 X+1 mat.
Including superior sigils in this formula would break it and who knows what that might do to your game. So they just disabled it from being included.
I’m sure they can put in a condition that would combine these exotic sigils but I very much doubt that it’s a priority to design.

No I didn’t go out and buy a bunch of stuff thinking it would work. But I do have a ton of useless ones from salvaging that are worthless on the tp that I would rather get some use out of than vendor it off. And while it may say 20% to upgrade, I would argue that actuality of that. Especially when I can put in 100 minor runes and get 1 majors back. I still have yet to get a superior as an upgrade from a major. That’s hardly 20% upgrade rate. That may be true for gear (although I’d argue that too, it’s more like 5% for me) but it doesn’t seem to hold true for sigils and runes.
So you want Anet to alter game mechanics to increase the value of some useless stuff you have lying around?
Sounds reasonable.
I would argue that the game mechanics being altered is what is causing this scenario. You can put in 4 exotics and still get an exotic out, why not 4 superior runes / sigils? Some exotics are worth a lot more than others (ie. Precursors) and they stand a chance to drop, so how is it unfair to have the forge give you a chance at a better sigil or rune? As it stands currently, 3/4 of the sigils and half the runes are vendor trash. Even blues and greens (weapons and armour) can be salvaged for essences of luck, yet we can’t even throw superior runes/sigils into the forge. I agree with OP, though my rate of luck is much better for getting superiors from rares, i’ve had some great success (including several superior sigils of bloodlust) but it is hit and miss. Sometimes I’ve bought several and gotten nothing useful after forging them, other times I have 4 or 8 lying around from salvages and I get a good one out of it.

I just forged 350 mayor runes, resulting in ~100 forges overall.
Guess how much suprior ones i got? 19.
Your sample size is just too low.
People who might have seen a particular thread on the BLTP forum can probably conclude I would be in favour of a change like this. It would help normalise prices between unwanted Sup runes/sigils and those that are highly demanded. However, I don’t think ANet really sees this as an issue, so it’s very unlikely that we’ll see a return to the old system.
