So I’ve heard that if you put a skin or transmute a different skin on the first stage Ascended Back, you will still be able to infuse it in the mystic forge and keep the new skin.

Can anyone confirm if this is true.
And if so, does this also work with the base exotic back you use for transforming it into ascended backpack.

I’m curious about this too, I transmuted the Exotic back item from Southsun to my Rox Quiver before I knew the ascended version existed.

if I can keep my Rox quiver skin and still get the Ascended item stats great, but if in trying to transmute to the Ascended version and I lose my beautiful quiver only to get stuck with that Doc. Oc. back-piece I’d rather not bother with it.

You’ve heard incorrectly. Once you transmute an item, it becomes a completely new and different item, meaning the mystic forge will no longer recognize it.

This applies to anything and everything, ascended back-pieces, legendary weapons (a transmuted twilight/sunrise can’t become eternity), etc…

From the wiki:

If you transmute a Prototype Fractal Capacitor (Ascended) with the skin of another item, the Mystic Forge will still recognize it as an ingredient in crafting the Beta. It will then lose the transmuted skin and default to the Beta skin.

This is what I have always heard. You will still be able to ‘upgrade’ the item in the MF, but the new item will be a completely new item and will lose any infusions and any skins applied to the old item.

In short, I have heard you can still upgrade an item in the MF but you WILL lose your skin.

I wouldn’t apply a skin to a backpiece unless I am finished upgrading the backpiece first.
