Turning Karma to Gold in Mystic Forge
Hey there-
After they removed jugs of karma as a daily achievement reward, karma is much harder to get.
105k karma > 7g.
7g is a couple dungeon paths, 105k karma is a couple days worth of events. So it’s up to you, but I would say it’s not worth it.
What i meant was when i dungeon, etc for gold i also get karma, and that karma builds up, Would this be the most profitable, or is there something that gives more gold?
Using karma to buy cloth items (and forging those to salvage) is much better. You could average between 1 and 1.5 karma per copper you get back, which in hindsight could have netted you more gold.

Considering that you can make more than 1g in return for each skillpoint, clovers are not a good way to get rid of your karma.
I think right now, buying light lvl 55-60 gloves with karma, throwing four of them into the mystic forge and salvaging what you get out of it for linen is the best way to make gold from karma. Some cooking recipes have a better ratio but you will never sell that much food to get rid of hundreds of thousands of karma.

I was looking at a 1K Karma to 50-60 silvers conversion thanks to the wardrobe patch. Then again it’ll most likely be unusable in less than 1 month so :/
I go to Kennelmaster Warsnout in the Iron Marches, buy light armor shoes for 315 karma and forge them. Then I salvage the result (you should use crude kits for this, but I don’t bother) and get linen.
Is there a cheaper vendor?

I don’t know the criteria for something that can be combined to get linen, so I can’t tell if there’s anything cheaper.

It’s cheapest at level 16 for wool, level 31 for cotton and level 46 for linen. That means buying Watcher’s Helmets from Lionguard Micah, Lionguard Coats from Joukje and Crab Grabbin’ Gloves from Bram Dawnrazer. There are other level 16 light armour (Haven Cloth Helm, Moledavia Gloves), but Watcher’s Helmets are the ones I get.

Too bad there is no lv 21, 34, and 49 for those as those levels as, if you don’t get a boost in level after forging, you will still have greater variance for jute, wool, and cotton respectively for lv 16, 31, and 46.
I am not in need of gold and rather save my karma so i havent really put some numbers into this but it might be worth checking out, if its more profitable to buy light chest armor instead of gloves because chests salvage into 3-5 cloth while gloves only salvage into 1-3 cloth.
The karma price difference might also warrant that going for wool instead of linen might be more profitable.

This guy might be the one to look at. He sells level 49 light chest armor for 462 karma.

Wanze, are you sure about the 3-5 and 1-3 salvage numbers?

This also explains this stuff a lot too.
Note: Level ranges not shown are purely one tier.
That link says chest armors salvage to 1-5 scraps instead of 3-5.
If you get an average of 4 scraps for salvaging chest armor, then the De Molish chest armor comes out ahead (462 karma per scrap versus 532), but if you get an average of 3 scraps per salvage, then the Crab Grabbin’ gloves come out ahead. (616 karma per scrap versus 532)
So once you hit 80 and have a decent set of gear, what really is the point to karma anymore? I’m not even trying to get an ascended item right now so this junk really has no use.

I’ve tested amount of basic materials salvaged from items – not a large test, but enough to get at least some numbers (about 150 of each type item). leather and cloth coats give 3.1 materials, leather and cloth other gives 2.1 materials, metal coat gives 2.45 ore, metal other gievs 1.35 ore.

Alts, new gear/build, alternate gear for specific activities (Soldiers for WvW comes to mind).

These are great. 252 karma per glove. I made like 7/8G investing 40/45k karma on these gloves just now (8x linen scrap / 3x cotton scrap). So, considering the the current value of cotton/linen/silk this allows for a verry nice compensation investing your current karma.
As i still need 3 pieces of ascended light armor this method will surely save me a great ammount of gold. Thanks alot for this thread!
I came across this thread and went to try it myself. I have a stupid question. How do you salvage these karma items? I’ve tried a few of them, and every time, both a Crude and Mystic salvage kits highlight the karma item in red and nothing happens. Am I doing something wrong, or did ANet update it so you can’t do this anymore?

You throw them into the mystic forge first. You only get a quater of the number of items, but depending on how you value karma it is still worthwhile.

Aha, that makes sense! Thanks!
so, this is a legit way to melt Karma? no need to mention it looks like a real pain to make this procedure, but right now only this one and TP seems fast enough.

Lost orrian jewellery boxes are the intended way to melt karma, it just happens that this is currently more effective. As a bonus side effect it doesn’t add to inflation.
As above. Orrian boxes are designed to shed the karma (if you really feel the need to) and convert the stuff inside to gold. A stack of these boxes will turn a very tidy profit in junk alone and have a reasonable rate of lodestone acquisition as well. On top of this you get a karma container in every box, so whatever you’ve spent in karma you’ll get back maybe 1/3rd to half of that karma, maybe even better than that.
That’s if it’s still working the same way as it was about 6 months ago…
