Upgrading a back item, what happens to skin?
I’m pretty sure you lose it, because you destroy the old item and make a new one in the Mystic Forge.
Can you even use the recipe if they have a different skin?

I’m pretty sure you can’t even put transmuted ascended back-pieces into the mystic forge, so no you won’t lose the skin, because you cant upgrade it to infused anyways.
I may be wrong, the only way to check is to open the mystic forge and see if it appears as a forge-able item.

Just checked, and I can still throw my Ascended Plush Quaggan Backpack into the forge with the materials to infuse it with that 5 AR.
I can’t confirm if accepting will lose the skin as I don’t care about the 5 AR, but at least I can tell you it’s possible to upgrade.
Hopefully someone can shed further light on this.

Unless they have changed that recently, I can confirm that you will lose your skin.
A few months back, I had the Quiver of Swift Flight on my mesmer. I applied the Wintersday bag skin to it. Later, I decided to upgrade my back piece to the Infused version. The Mystic Forge accepted the back piece. The resulting quiver did not have the old skin.
So yeah, it creates a new item and thus you lose the skin.

You loose it. I lost my halloween fire book.
