Maybe I just have incredibly bad luck, but I’ve just spent 2+ hours trying to obtain a small quantity of vanilla beans since they’re used in at least 10+ cooking recipes including the bakers wet ingredients one which is needed for about a dozen items.

After scouring Caledon Forest for herb seedlings (which are supposedly now the only source for the bean) I have about 25 black perppercorns and 0 — zero! nil! natta! — vanilla beans. There aren’t all that many cook-type gathering nodes in the first place (and most are onion, carrots, lettuce, etc) but every single one I harvested failed to yield an item that is needed in a (relatively) large number of recipes. Granted, I could have bought what I needed from the trading market at close to 2 silver per (which is insanely expensive for a material used in making something that requires cooking 75 to make)…

The same is true of chili peppers (requiring a trip to Charr territory and a lot of patience) but at least those are only used in a few recipes. Vanilla beans are considerably more of a stable and shouldn’t be quite so hard to get.

Please consider putting them back in the karma vendors or make them a lot easier to get — perhaps along the lines of the cinnamon stick drop rate from trees (I have 200+ of those and they’re used in only half a dozen recipes) or chocolate/butter from bags (I have more than a full stack of each of those without even trying).

Really, an item needed for more than half a dozen recipes ought to be fairly readily available…

Some ingredients have become way to hard to get after the removed them from karma vendors

In EU thers only 300 up in total on the TP

Some other ingredients that should be put back on the vendor is eggs, black peppercorn or the apples which there are 0 of on the TP

I agree completely.

I have exactly this concern and was about to post a thread as well. I don’t want to sound like a troll-whiner, but I am having a harder and harder time having faith that this is the way Anet wants it to be.

Vanilla is a low level material and it doesn’t seem right that one bean is almost 2 silver on the TP and that there are so few on the TP. Two nights ago there were 2 listed.

I understand taking it off a Karma vendor, but I can add my story to all the rest- I just completed Metrica Province and Caledon Forest and landed 1 vanilla bean node in total with about 35 peppercorns.

I cross my fingers the next set of patch notes will mention someone accidentally set the drop rate to 0 or similar and it is now fixed.

I have never seen Chili Pepper or Green Beans and have only gotten 4 Vanilla Beans ever and those came from bags not from gathering. I have had to level cooking without them and considering how much Vanilla Beans are used it is very difficult. I have only found a handful of Apples as well, all of them from loot bags too. It is frankly absurd that these low level mats are so rare. They definitely went WAY overboard on the nerfbat.

Apples in Bulk can be purchased from Eda in Queensdale for Karma or from Apple Jack in Gendarran for 16c each.

As a general rule, if the ingredient is Account Bound then there is a vendor somewhere selling the item. Just check the wiki for their locations.

The tables for all of the gathering nodes really needs to be looked at. I get nothing but carrots and onions from vegetable nodes in level 35+ areas. If I wanted carrots and onions, I’d go to the zones where they pop specifically. They should NOT be part of higher level crafting nodes.

Here’s my experience – and please, I say all of this with a smile, as I know there are things in game that still need to be tweaked, and perhaps vanilla beans are one of them – I don’t let things like this bother me, as I know all will work out fine in the end, and I’m too old to QQ about stuff

I have a couple of characters in their teens, and a level 80. All of my toons gather whatever herbs are out there – always – as a rule, and without fail.

In all the time I’ve been playing (minimum 4 hours per day, every day, without fail, and 12 hours per day on weekends), I have… 5 vanilla beans.

I used one yesterday to discover a recipe. I’m holding on to the other 4, and have Lionguard posted to defend them <jks>.

Lighthearted humor aside, I can support a call for a more plentiful supply of these

There are a lot of guides on youtube that use copious amounts of these for white frosting et. Same with Chili Peppers, Apples and Garlic.

I agree on the drop rates being completely horrible, but people aren’t creative and that’s driving up the prices too.

I finally found a herb sprout that would sometimes give Vanilla beans. It was very close to the Watchful Scource Waypoint. I would visit it several times a day and get vanilla beans for my chef. Now with the last patch, that plant has been removed and replaced with onions!!!!! . I love a challenge , but there comes a point when this is no longer enjoyable.

I want to add my voice to this as well: I’ve spent hours gathering herbs in search for vanilla beans and got only 2 (and I consider that as being lucky!).

I would agree with the low drop rate if we were talking about some ingredient used in 1-2 recipes but as vanilla is used in so many, including crafting other ingredients, then it makes no sense.

Not to mention that with this careless move of removing ingredients from karma vendors, ANet made a bunch of people very rich without any effort or skill required – just being lucky that days ago they stockpiled out of laziness.

The solution is very simple: increase the drop rate.

From what type of nodes? Herb seedlings? I ask because I heard a lot of conflicting reports about vanilla. Some were even saying that they got it from some trees, the same way as cinnamon :|

Garlic is what I get every single time from the Herb nodes in Queensdale & Kessex. I think the herb nodes over all need to generate more items. With many of the other nodes you’re usually just getting one item, onions for instance, so it’s easy to run around and grab those.

With the herbs though there’s one of five possible items to get and many of them are critically important, Vanilla is one, and Sage is another. Coriander isn’t as critical to cooking, but is still a rare drop because of it’s inclusion in the Grey Dye recipe and is currently going for over 3 silver each. It would be nice if the supply was increased to match the demand for them.

All the harvest nodes (including ore, wood) change up when servers get restarted. They shuffle around the map. They had a good streak where servers didn’t get restarted for a few days, so you had a few days where node locations were static.

It’s not a very obvious effect unless you start going to exactly the same node very frequently for several days. I imagine it’s anti-bot code, to throw off the bots frequently but irregularly.

This comes right down to an effort vs. reward thing. Unless vanilla beans are used to create a truly epic recipe with eye popping, spin around in your desk chair bonuses and buffs….it needs to be made far more available. lol Pretty please, with vanilla almond cream on top?

I suspect it’s intended, considering vanilla is used in one of the most sought after chef items in the game. I think people need to get out of the mentality that just because a crafting ingredient is ‘low level’ it should be abundant.

Rather than complain, make the most of it considering it’s one of the few ways to make a reliable profit at the moment.

I think the people who are complaining are the ones being gouged by those making the profit…

Personally, I seldom use the TP for crafting materials… too many people see them as a source of easy profit because high level characters with disposible income are always willing to pay more for someone else to do their harvesting.

I’ve got friends and guildies who sent me harvestables and I spend a lot of time running around zones with alts getting completions that I eventually find enough of whatever I need without buying it off TP.

To be honest, go to Sparkfly or Mount Maelstrom. They’re higher level zones, but not only do you get 3 to 5 Vanilla Beans, you also get 1-3 Cloves which are worth about the same amount as Vanilla Beans and there are plenty of nodes. I love crafting but their system is making me hate it. The prices on the market for resource are absolutely ridicules. Then compound that by the resale price for crafted items selling for less than the vendor purchases them its just out of hand. Why am I going to list an item for 1 copper more than the vendor buys for which after fees puts you at a loss.

I’ve spent almost 200 hours on this game with multiple characters and I still can’t craft for more than a few minutes at a time with no profit margins. If I want to craft It’s starting to feel like you are being forced into anets own RMT system to purchase resource from China farm operations that own the trading post.

Vanilla Beans… never EVER got one in the wild. Trading Post only, but I did do a session of buying low and selling high and made a tidy profit from them while keeping 50 for myself.

Chili Peppers… I have 8 character slots, an 80, 65, 46 and the rest lowbies. All the lowbies are parked by herb sprout nodes in the Charr starting area. I log them in once an hour to harvest said node(s). I now have 71 chili peppers and enough black peppercorn to choke an army.

I was lucky in that I stocked up on vanilla beans (somewhat), as well as a few other karma ingredients pre-nerf. But I’m running low now because I do use omnomberry bars – it’s my one magic find boost.

Post-nerf, I’ve found all of five vanilla beans, five oranges (those were in loot bags), and one (count em, one) clove – all in Sparkfly Fen. And I’m a compulsive gatherer.

Have found lots of chili peppers, also had stocked up on those a bit, but even the ones I found in the wild are bound to account.

Green beans are available from a heart vendor in Wayfarer Hills – but his quest seems to be bugged. It’s Albin Chronicler who wants Jotun runestones – you have to trade and barter with the Jotuns to get the runestones, but to start it you need either two rabbits or two loose ores, and I’ve only found one of each in the quest area, plus the items only stay in your inventory for 15 seconds, which makes it more frustrating. So….

Seriously though, I spent a few hours there yesterday and came out with between 20 & 30 Vanilla Beans and a dozen or so Cloves. Well that is part of the problem. Any ingredient that is used at both high level and low level is going to end up being expensive or extremely expensive. Making back the cost shouldn’t be an issue for people making/using Omnomberry Bars but that might not be the case for other people.
