I’ve been playing GW2 since the release, so back then the cap for skills was a mere 400 levels for exotic gear.

It’s no surprise to anyone that the biggest XP boosts are given from discovering new recipes, and in fact it’s literally the ONLY way to level up your crafts later on. With this in mind, anyone who has found all the exotics, or the greater share of them, pre-500 patch is in for a very rough time trying to max out their crafting levels.

Case in point, I’ve come to a bit of an issue with tailoring as I made it one of my goals to master as many recipes as I was able to at the time. Note, that while this isn’t ALL of them, it’s a huge number and greatly reduces my options for capping the skill in its entirety.

So, the real question is… are there options for those who have already discovered almost everything there is to discover. And if not, is the only option to level an alt’s tailoring to make up for it?

They did reset all exotic discoveries when they introduced Lvl 500 crafting. From my experience you can get easily from 400 to 500 with discoveries even if you had all discovered before the patch, so no problem there.

Cheers!

I don’t agree it’s the only way to level, as it seems there is usually one or two things (like insignia/inscriptions, or Ascended item refinement) you can still earn XP on even though this is of course slower than making discoveries.

That’s weird. From 400-425 or so, you should be able to do that just by refining the T6 mats. After that it would only take about 25 or so exotic discoveries to max to 500. That’s how I did my armorsmith, weaponsmith, huntsman. If I could be bothered I’d do it for the remainder of the professions too. It helps if you have the crafting boosters as well as the guild crafting buff.

They’re still listed in my crafting list, and it doesn’t list it as a new discovery when I try to create one in the discoveries tab. Either this is a bug, or they didn’t universally reset. Either way, it’s not looking good for my tailor.

Do you have Rabid, soldiers and magi items discovered? These should be clear as IIRC they only came in with ascended crafting.

400-420 refine gossamer and leather.
420-450 craft exotics and make 20 slot packs for yourself.
450-470 figure out how much ascended material you will need for your end goal and slowly make them all
470-500 craft exotics

Crafting exotics still gets you experience even if you have discovered them already, but it will take you twice as long.

EDIT: I forgot to mention Sentinel and Nomad armour. Sentinel insignias are expensive, but you should be able to sell your product for only a minimal loss (or slight profit if you are lucky)

This could be a bug…but just to ask the obvious: Do you mean that the exotic insignias and various armor stats for your tailor are all already (or still) “known”, making it impossible to advance your Tailoring past level 400? For example, before the big patch your tailor had “learned” to craft a Beserker Exalted Coat through the discovery panel…and post-patch, it had not reset and you cannot re-discover it? Would you mind perhaps posting a screenie or two (for science and bug-head-scratching)? This is the first I’ve heard of someone not having the exotics progress reset….

Might want to try checking a few sites that have guides on leveling post 400. I wasn’t in the same boat at the OP but it might help show some that were missed.

  • Do not forget about discovering T5 RARE items. While their recipes cost karma and their discovery is not that big a boost, the items will salvage for Ectos when no Ectos are used to make them. These are great to do between LVL 420 – 450 or +475.
  • Try NOT to do any Exotic discoveries during the material refinement phases (400-42# and 450-47#) as those are best held for when refinement can get you no advancement. Making Exotics you need to use is an exception but try to limit it.
  • Don’t forget to the un-craftable inscriptions / insignia that can be obtained via other methods (Soldier, Cavalier, Sentinel, Rabid, etc.) If you can use the item, buying the inscription / insignia off the TP does allow you a discovery you cannot get another way (note you STILL have to pony up 5 Ectos for these items).
