Why the double Standard on Silk?
ANet guess what! I’m back to deleting Mithril (In this case refining it en masse into Milthrillium that I’m never gonna use), whereas I still need about 300 more silk to my next Ascended Armor piece.
Both Astral and Ayrilana have good points here. Any changes in supply also need some forethought, because what usually happens is that when supply of rare mats goes up, prices fall a bit, and then players go, “Hey, I think I can actually make <rare shiny skin> now!” And then demand goes up, which is why prices for T6 mats have gone up overall. When T6 mats became more plentiful (and with the addition of the Wardrobe), more players started trying to get Legendaries and rare skins, which pushed up demand beyond the increased drop rate from Champ bags and the first Crown Pavillion farming pit.
So if we were to reduce the Silk requirement for Damask (which, as a player, I’d love), it would quite possibly inspire more players to try for Ascended armor, which would put us right back at square one, while increasing prices for Wool/Cotton/Linen.
Now, I do think we could handle this if we also increased the salvage rate for Cloth scraps by 50% at the same time we reduced the requirements from 100 bolts to 50 bolts, thereby increasing supply. We’d probably see prices for cloth largely remain the same, but it WOULD make it easier for a player to farm his own supply, which should at least improve the experience for individual players trying for Ascended armor.
I just did the math real quick for ascended armor.
It’s about 546.21 gold for the light armor set if you do buy orders and craft everything. It’s about 10.5 gold more if you buy all materials outright and still craft everything.
It’s about 492.5 gold for the heavy armor set if you do buy orders and craft everything. It’s about 11 gold more if you buy all materials outright and still craft everything.
This is just only a 54 gold difference between the two sets or 9 gold per piece. The key is to craft the threads yourself

There is one important difference. You CAN harvest for heavy armor relatively easily, without the need for reaching for TP at all. You cannot do that for light armor. And THAT is the reason why one is much, much easier to craft than the other.

Sure, you can grab a pickaxe and hit up rich vein nodes and have what you need in next to no time. But it’s not like that’s any easier than killing mobs…and hoping rng gives you a drop…and hoping rng allows that drop to be either armor or a bag…and hoping rng allows the armor to be light armor…and hoping rng allows the bag to contain cloth scaps. See? That’s just as easy as mining. Right? I mean, sure…you’ve still got to collect three times as much silk as mithril, but what’s 200% here and there?

Yeah and light armor uses leather which is incredibly cheap. I believe all of the components were less than a silver a piece. It’s not that difficult to farm an additional 50 gold.

I only have 100 gold across my account. 50 gold is a lot to me.

Ascended armor/weapons and legendaries are a lot to you as well. These are luxury items so they will be expensive.

I used less than 100 gold total (not sure how much, i think it was way less, but would need o recalculate it now to be sure) to craft my whole set of heavy ascended armor. I managed to do that because i was able to farm for materials for it without too much hassle in the time span set by timegating. If i have tried doing this for a light armor, i’d likely still be gathering resources half a year from now. This is a serious disconnect here, one that cannot be justified by trying to fix silk position on TP. The cure here turned out to be worse than the disease.

Full ascended heavy set needs 25 damask cloth compared to the 36 for light. If all you needed for heavy was under 100 gold then the extra 11 damask should not be an issue for you.
Also, you can farm materials and use those proceeds to fund cloth purchases.

Not without a vicious outcry.
This never made sense to me. There’s no direct way to use Gems to buy more Scraps so there’s no “legal tender” precedent here. Furthermore:
When the game first got rolling and Soft Wood supply was completely over-saturating to the point they added another log required for refining AND temporary forge recipe to eat up as much of the overstock as they could, they didn’t suddenly say “Okay you are all indebted to us 25% more logs (back-Logs… get it?) now for all the Crafting progression you’ve already made”. When courts change a precedent, statutes of limitation on damages apply automatically to all cases that came before the decision was overturned (unless it was a human rights violation which obviously this situation IS NOT). There has to be some direct pre-existing cause for that level of entitlement which assumes that the buyer couldn’t possibly have known all the risks and at the same time proves that the acting company was actively concealing all evidence of said risks.
I’m not talking about courts and definitely not talking about level-headed behavior. ;D But I think you understand that.
Comparing the ascended crafting silk issue to the soft wood plank doesn’t work when you consider scale. To make that one plank, the time required to get one more soft log and the space to hold the other three that make it are a drop in the bucket (specifically “move to the next gummo sapling” and 3/250 of the bucket). To turn silk scraps into a bolt of damask takes more scraps than you can hold in a bank slot and the time requirement for the extra 150 scraps becomes ridiculous. Soft wood planks are used in fair quantities for only a low tier of weapons with little demand; damask is used in large quantities in every piece of ascended armor.
The idea that someone could have saved this time, effort and/or gold if they had waited just a little longer is what will set people off, because the cost is non-trivial. Never mind that ‘a little longer’ translates to 9 months and counting, that many WOULDN’T have waited. ANet took something that was effectively toilet paper and turned it into pennies in a system where anything else comparable was a $20 bill, then demanded you pay your grocery bill in pennies. This carries a double-whammy of “I’ve been throwing away gold for months,” by dumping silk when it was worthless and, “Now I can’t get enough fast enough” by hoisting the requirements through the roof. After almost a year of adjusting to that shock, having the system revert to something easier would be galling.
It’s inefficient to go node farming for ingredients when you can farm for gold or items to sell that will net you enough gold to buy what you need outright. Cloth will always be one of those types that you can’t farm directly like wood and ore. There are no silk wurm nodes, no sheep, no cotton plants, etc.
They should have already put the silk recipes back to match the others. It will still be the most expensive mat since it used in more than everything else. It just won’t be grossly overpriced. The people that defend this are just the guys that are making tons of money off it. Those same people would make money with the cost to make damask equal to leather and mythril counter parts. They just won’t make as much. So they are trying to make it sound like its a bad idea.
don’t give Anet ideas.
If you think complaining about silk will make them nerf it. They won’t.
They’ll just make the other materials cost as much as silk.

I’d look into silk more before making assumptions like you just did. Silk had zero demand and sold at vendor price until ascended armor came out. It is only really used for the creation of thread for damask. I don’t believe you even know about crafting as it’s obvious other components are used more. Just look at ore.
How do you make money off of silk? The margin between the buy and sell orders is too small.
I suggest you look into research demand and supply. It will show you why prices are what they are and why they will never be equal to metal and leather. Also, reducing the quantity of silk required for damask will increase the demand for damask and increase the price of all of the other cloth components. You’re not really putting yourself in a better place. Also, the different between heavy and light armor sets is only 50 gold.

I dont think you understand, its best in slot so everyone that doesnt have it NEEDS it or they will QQ because math too hard. 50 gold difference and we get white knights of silk demands…let them have their QQ because as we all know, ascended armor makes you a better player.
