Hi, I want to start crafting but ive only played a couple weeks and have little resources.
My highest lvl character is lvl 15.
The problem is that you have to buy vendor sold materials like cooking supplies, tin ore and jute thread.
These all sell for 80 copper and I only have 12 silver. I dont know if I should be spending the small amount of money I have on vendor crafting materials.
Its too bad that there is this crafting money barrier for new players, I would have liked to level crafting from the start.
Should I wait till im higher level? What level is a good level to start crafting?

12 silver = 1200 copper, and as you level the money from rewards will get better, but not a ton better.
What’s a good level? I say craft whenever you have the mats or when you visit an area that has your crafting table.
Gather everything, whether you’re using it for your tradeskill or not, that way you can sell the stuff you don’t use on the Trading Post.
Break down only what you need for mats, vendor the rest and you shouldn’t have money issues for crafting.
Chef is the exception, that can get expensive to level up.

Edit: It’s also a good source of XP, so do it whenever you can.
Discoveries will give you tons of xp.

Crafting is poorly implemented in GW2.

ATM there is no point in players crafting.

However, if you just like going through the motions of crafting using the existing poor design mechanics then feel free to do so.

I highly doubt you have enough copper at lvl 15 where buying lumps of tin would be too expensive. Lumps of tin come in stacks of 10? i believe and you turn those into bronze ingots. Shouldnt be too expensive. But with that said don’t expect your crafted items to keep pace with your character level.

Depending on what level you are and what you’re trying to do you might be able to buy the parts from other players on the TP cheaper than making them:

IE a Helm is Casing + Padding + Insignia.

The mats for a Casing = 60c the padding 30c and the Insigina 80c.
The price of a Casing on TP 5c, padding 20c insignia 45c

So your true cost of discovery (which is usually best and fastest way to level) is only 70c. The item vendors for 30c so your cost for that skillpoint is 40c.

Where do you get 40c to blow though 50+ skill points? Sell those crafting mats you collected.

I keep enough as an overflow to make anything I couldn’t buy cheaper and then TP the rest. If you aren’t netting out to the + money that way, you need to farm more anyway, but it IS possible to keep up with your level from about lvl 20 on.

I was checking the prices of stuff on the trade house last night while clearing out my crafting bank, and the prices on the uncommon crafting materials have plummeted lately. The first week the game was released you were looking at a silver per item…even on teir 1 stuff…last night they were down to 12-55 copper depending on the item. I wish I was leveling crafts for the first time again. Cheap as all get out.

I think you might have just picked the two most expansive craft to level.

It’s hard to harvest sufficient materials to level crafting…best you can do is to harvest every single node that you see, explore the map you’re in, and complete every event that you can find. Do some calculation to see if it’s better to sell your loot to vendor or to salvage it. Identify farming spots, and go back there to farm from time to time for the mats you want. With the money, put in some buy order at a lower price. It takes planning and research in order to level those two craft in the cheapest way possible.

For tailoring, epaulet, glove, boot and helm cost the least materials. Then look for the cheapest insignia’s in terms of mats, and discover them. Sometimes, the components/insignia could be selling for less than the material cost to make them. You’ll have to make a judgement weather to buy it, or just craft it yourself if the difference is small so that you get experience crafting them. Craft all the components first while you can still gain experience. Plan ahead, drop a bunch of buy orders in TP before you adventure or log off.

Can’t help you much on cooking as I’ve got it maxed before the changes. Best not to touch it until you can find a steady source of income to support it.

I wouldn`t even bother with crafting on your first character. After I got to 80 and played for awhile I decided to make another character and dedicate that one to smithing. I think I have a little over 120 hours invested into that character and have 400weapon and 268armor smithing. I farmed all the mats which took forever since the antifarm sticks it right up your kitten everytime. You will find everything you need on the tp for cheaper gearwise. Just save all the mats you aquire so when you do decide to start crafting seriously you will have a good foundation to start with.
