Q:
mystic stone and precursors
A:
I’ve heard so from some people. But I guess no one really knows for sure.
We don’t know. I’ve thrown about 30 combines with exotics and forge stone and have come up with nothing – small sample size, take it if you want.

I combined 3 greatswords and a stone.
The result was a pistol.
Protector of righteousness and purger of corruption.
I bought ~40 stones when they went on sale a while back. Every exotic combine resulted in aquatic weapons or junk torches/horns. I stopped about 12 into it and just used the rest on mystic salvage kits. Lesson learned, on the bright side I did get my precursor eventually from rares I crafted.
The mystic forge stone counts as a random item.
When used in forge you get the average rarity (E+E+R+Stone = Exotic)

Wrong. Mystic forge stones count as a random item but not random rarity. 3 exotics+stone=random exotic.
You can never mix rare+exotics. You can, however, put 3 rares and a stone in and get an exotic out but that would be a waste of a stone since rares are much cheaper generally and stones cost more than most people can justify spending for 25% of a lottery ticket.
I once placed 3 rare pistols + mystic stone. Got an exotic mace =/
