i just started playing the game for a few hours last night, i made a necromancer and picked up tailoring so i can make armor/bags as i level up instead of buying them of the trading post (as i find bags are usually pretty expensive in mmos) im currently level 4 and still learning the ropes and dont really have an idea of what else would be most beneficial to my necro.

also as a tailor what should i be salvaging? and selling?

Some rules of thumb I live by (your mileage may vary)

#1: Salvage whites, sell blues and up. Anything that says ‘salvage item’, salvage it. Later on, lvl 68+ rares can be worth salvaging for Globs of Ectoplasm (rare crafting material) but that’s a ways off for you.

#2: For Necromancer, in addition to tailor I would suggest one of the following: Artificer (make your own Scepters / Staves / Focus), Weaponsmith (Make your own Daggers / Axes) or Jeweler (Make your own trinkets.)

Of the three, Jeweler is the easiest to level and maintain in tandem with Tailor because it does not compete for materials, while Artificer and Weaponsmith will both need the same Fine Crafting materials (venom sacs, blood, and other critter bits.) Also, you will get more weapons from drops that you can use than you will get trinkets (rings, amulets, earrings.)

GL out there, and happy crafting!

I’m in the habit of selling blues…. some people salvage them, but I’ll be honest, when I was going for the 500 salvages for the monthly, and started salvaging blues, I noticed the impact in my cash flow. Your mileage may vary, but I felt it.

As to putting insignias (runes) in what you craft, you can only do that on equipment you have equipped as the process of upgrading soulbinds the item. To use an upgrade, pres ‘h’ to view your character’s equipment, then double click the upgrade and then click the item you want to attach it to.

Do a chef. I have 8 chars. All of them have chef + 1 other craft. Chef is easy to level plus you get the stat + XP bonus whilst doing PvE/WvW.

I personally wouldn’t recommend artificer/jeweller as one of your first few crafts as these two are more expensive than other crafts. If you end up levelling multiple chars, youll have more resources to level these later on.

@Theldrin – glad to hear! i’ve just started a necro as well and it’s been super fun (after playing my Guardian exclusively for who knows how long).

to answer your question, are you talking about runes? or actual insignias (what you can craft from the crafting stations)?

remember general rule of thumb, most gear will have level requirements, including what runes or upgrades you can slot into your gear. for e.g. if the gear you have is lvl 20 and the rune or upgrade you want to use has a level reuirement of 40, you won’t be able to use it.

and insignias are used to craft items with specific stats. and you can do so in the discovery panel (top left tab of crafting panel) if you’ve never created that specific item before. then after you have, you cann always find it in the crafting tab (2nd tab on left iirc). so if you wanted to craft say a pair of gloves with stats a, b, and c. you’d craft the necessary components needed to craft a glove, craft the insignia with stats a, b, and c, then go to the discovery panel and you can put all three together.

hope this makes sense. and was just trying to cover all ground.

yes akamon i was talking about the actual insignias…i looked it up on the wiki and found what items upgrade actual equipment.
i must say tho im digging the crafting alot…i like crafting in mmo’s in general (except EQ 2) its simple enough but with the discovery aspect and the use of insignias it adds for more customization….wich is always good

ah, okay, hope i was able to answer our question then. discovery yields the most exp in terms of leveling up your crafting. and remember if you wanna make the same item again, look under the crafting tab. in the beginning, i thought it was bugged for the longest time, cause i couldn’t “discover” it again. which… makes sense. lol

it’s not too bad! i enjoy crafting too. and you get 10 actual levels for every 1 – 400 craft. and i like being able to make stuff for myself : ))

In terms of money gain, if you’re salvaging things that will give metal, it’s more cost effective to salvage them than sell. Everything else will not be as cost-effective until you factor in the chance of tier 6.
