For those who don’t know, Kormir is the 6th human god, but she wasn’t always a god. She was once an allied NPC of the player in GW1 who let the player do all the work while she received the ultimate reward. If you’d like to know more, this video explains it all:

Or you could just vote for Gnashblade and see it for yourself when he unlocks it as a fractal.

I don’t think I need to explain to anyone who Trahearne is.

So we run around on Southsun getting barrel rolled by karka and dodging mines in Canache’s layer only for Kiel to arrive once the work is all done and take the credit for all our work and taking praise from Magnus.

Then we run around finding the murder suspects and working with Marjory to solve the mystery of the Dragon Bash to once again see Kiel steal the credit.

Finally we invade the Aetherblade Retreat and take down the pirates and stop their ship from escaping (while Kiel talks nonsense about needing us to jump up a bunch of platforms to unlock a door for her, she is absolutely useless – remember Rox and Braham in the Molten Facility? Those guys were helpful). At the end of it all, pirates we defeated leave behind their ship, but it’s not handed to us. Kiel gets it. Once again, the NPC gets the rewards for the player’s hard earned work. To add insult to injury, based off the foundation of the player’s hard work, Kiel is put in the running for the Captain’s Council while we run around waiting for the next thing she is going to take the credit for.

It’s great that Kiel wants to put a discount on WP costs, that’s really useful for people who don’t have an air ship to fly around in. It’s a real shame the player didn’t just defeat a bunch of pirates who owned an air ship, that could come in real handy as an alternative to WPs.

With Kiel’s track record I don’t care who her opponent is. Anything is better than supporting the legacy of the third coming of Kormir. Well, maybe Trahearne isn’t better.

Haaaaaa, I hadn’t seen that video before x’D Nightfall in a nutshell, hurr.

EDIT: I actually liked Kormir as a character, but there is definitely a neverending habit in GW storytelling where the player character is the main character’s assistant. I know a certain amount of it is unavoidable unless you’re very careful with the storytelling, since there are thousands of ‘main character’ player characters out there in reality. But still . . . Trahearne, rargh!

This argument again? Really?

Why can’t people understand that as players, we do not want what they’re getting!. If we were the ones that attained godhood, the game would be over. Nothing more to do. If we were the ones that led the Pact, the chara would be so busy leading we’d get to do nothing. If we were the ones that were being pushed for Captain’s Council, we’d be embroiled in internal politics and stuff and not get to have fun.

We don’t want that stuff. We want to play the game. Those charas are made to take those roles as, as a player, those rewards are not rewards at all.

I would have been satisfied that my character became a God after Nightfall or the Lord Commander of the Pact forces in GW2. Instead of, like, the best friend of the hero of the movie who gets the girl and you get her ugly cousin.

But if you did, what would you do? You’d be too busy for all that adventuring stuff. Your game would be over. Nothing more to do.

Those charas were created to take those roles to allow us players to keep enjoying the game. This is no single-player RPG where we beat it and the game is over. There is more to do after we win. But taking those roles would prevent that.

This is why my vote is going to Evon, she ain’t going to get what she want (well ok she didn’t asked for be a counsil member since it was Magnus who put her put to be nominated so I guess I don’t want Magnus to get what he want)!

As for the whole Kormir/ Trahearne thing, sure I understand why they get the higher position but that doesn’t mean I liked to be treated like a lap dog (the amount of times I heard Trehearne saying “To me commander”)!

Its simple to solve really. Treat the player like they ARE the main character, since they are. When I play my story, in my eyes my character is the hero, and every other player are just other adventurers. Just as im sure most other players do. It hurts immersion more to try to canonize every player in every other player’s eyes. Elder Scrolls and Fallout give a nickname to the player, so in future things they use that, so if they make GW3, youd hear about “The hero who stopped Zhaitan” and youd know it was you, and each other player would know it was them, etc.

Also I like Kiel. Obviously she steals the spotlight, but atleast she doesnt make you feel bad about it.

So should LA have a council with 15,000,000 seats so every “hero” “main” character player gets a seat? How would that work exactly. Everyone beats the personal story, so should the pact have 15,000,000 lord commanders? I’m not sure how people fail to understand that you just cant do that in an mmo. Yeah it works for fallout and skyrim, those are single player, there is only one hero. You have to tell a story different in an mmo. Get over it, you experience the story, you ARE NOT the main character

Holy kitten man… Nightfall has been 7 years ago and you still can’t comprehend that the hero (our characters) was not given the knowledge/blessing to soak up Abaddon’s eternal, godly powers! We would’ve died as well and the energies would’ve still blown up the Realm of Torment and Tyria…

The reason Kormir didn’t do much was purely mechanics. If she became a killable ally, people would probably be still stuck at Gates of Madness, in the final battle with Shiro and the Lich. If she’d been made an invulnerable ally, she could’ve killed all the mobs without players.

And seriously, would you’ve preferred to just hear of what happened to Canach and Mai Trin, rather than witnessed? The devs had to involve the player in those missions, but lore-wise, it was Ellen and a band of volunteers and refugees stopping Canach and Ellen, her crew, and deputized people defeating the Aetherblades – among which we the players were definitely there, but for the sake of epicness our role was enlarged mechanics-wise.

Vote for Ellen. Vote for the future. Vote for Lion’s Arch.

Actually technically speaking the hero from GW1 is mentioned in GW2 in several places, so it’s not just “Elder Scrolls and Fallout” that give a nickname to the player, so does Guild Wars. In-fact, in Divinity’s Reach, there’s an npc conversation between a scholar and a man about the “hero who led the ascalon refugees to kryta, fought the white mantle, and struck down a lich lord” and the man is all amazed and says “I hope one day we meet heroes like that.”

So yeah, the player gets credit in everything in Guild Wars, it’s just that the player isn’t the only person involved in these situations. There are times where Trahearne acknowledges you being there to fight Zhaitan with him, and acknowledges you as a friend and ally, and even a necessary component to the fight. You’re the Commander too, just one level below Trahearne, everybody else is below you and Trahearne. So technically, you’re still pretty high up there, and still quite noteworthy.

Even if we didn’t want the seat on the council, I sure as hell would have loved a flying airship. We wouldn’t need Kiel to discount WP costs – we could fly around in our airship. She wants us to pay our WP costs while she flys around in our airship. Scumbag politician right there.

I distinctly remember Kiel begging us not to leave her behind when we were forced to do some jumping to progress inside the dungeon. She was too lazy to even jump up with us. I also remember Rox and Braham being useful combat allies (and even throwing in some clutch revives) but Kiel was constantly needing a res (was she even present during the final fight?).

I’m not interested in Kiel’s story or being her lackey. It’s the Living Story, not Kiel’s Story. It shouldn’t be all about her.

If you want to see story written well that doesn’t end up being all about the NPC ally, look at Winds of Change from GW1. John Stumme and his team knocked that one out of the park. Frequently in that chapter of Guild Wars: Beyond I felt like I was an impressive hero of Tyria – NPCs actually recognised me and either saw me as a hero or a threat. Since Kiel has been the focos of the story I may as well not even be around (except when something actually needs to be done).

I’m quite the contrary to most people anyways. I like Kormir, Trahearne, Logan, Destiny’s Edge, Ellen Kiel, etc. But that is because I don’t seem to perceive them the same way everybody else does. To me, Logan made up for the death of Snaff by nearly sacrificing his life to save the rest of Destiny’s Edge in Arah. I think Kormir and Trahearne are likeable characters, and I actually LOVE characters that make wrong choices or mistakes, because to me that shows the character is more real. It shows even heroes can make mistakes. In the case of not getting credit for anything, I call that complete and utter kitten. Home Instance shows you reverence. Trahearne calls you a friend and invaluable ally. Destiny’s Edge literally thanks YOU for getting them back together. Just because you’re not Number One doesn’t mean you don’t get credit. There’s multiple heroes in the story, not just you, and I actually LIKE that. So meh.

This is actually a big, recurring issue with ArenaNet.

In Prophecies, our characters ran around like mindless chicken, taking orders first from Rurik (who was our characters’ mentor when they were young and inexperienced) until his death, and later we began following person after person without really making any decision. We eventually learned that just following people blindly led us to joining the bad guys for a while, and we still kept just following people.

In Factions, we spend a long part of the game following Master Togo, who was our characters’ mentor when they were young and inexperienced, until his death. Sounds familiar? We also spent most of the game following Mhenlo around, to the point that people complained it felt like he was the true hero of the game (again, sounds familiar?).

In Nightfall, Kormir was our characters’ mentor when they were young and inexperienced, so I was rather sure she would die, but to my surprise she actually didn’t. And while our characters eventually became the leader of the Sunspears, and we actually did not follow THAT many people around, at the end of the game we were just doing what Kormir told us to do.

In GW2, our character is always taking orders. Be it from the racial mentor, later the order mentor, and later Traheanne, our characters never take the initiative.

In other words, ArenaNet is incapable of telling a story in which our characters are actually the ones directing the action. Our characters don’t plan, don’t make strategies, don’t even lead – they react, follow orders, and do as they are told.

I think one of the reasons for this is how our characters would need a personality to actually be that relevant to the story – and some MMORPG players think their characters are themselves, so they would be angry to see our characters having a personality different from their own.

To which I reply with a laugh. The guy who was posting here complaining about how female characters were played by male guys (because he was trying to find a girlfriend while playing the game) forgot what kind of game he was playing – a role playing game. The “role” there isn’t “tank/DPS/healer”, it means playing as something that is not you.

I wish we could have at least one part of the Living Story in which our characters aren’t asked to go find a NPC, and then told exactly how to proceed in order to deal with a given issue. I would love if our characters said “Ah, your idea is nice and all, but I have a plan of my own”, and we, players, were then led to execute our characters’ plan.

The problem is that unless we, as players, make the plan, there will be people complaining that ‘it still isn’t my story/plan’.

As I see it, the players that hate these NPCs will not ever be satisfied, regardless. They want what is impossible to really give in an MMO and still keep it an MMO. They want a single-player storyline. Not a large immersive world where they are not the best at everything.

Isn’t that what the personal storyline was meant to be?

I think it can be done. Instanced content could be used to deliver this kind of content, together with some creative use of open areas (an alternate version of the Cursed Shores, available only to those who have finished the personal storyline, so people could choose in which version of the map they want to play in, for example).

ArenaNet has the right tools. IMO, they simply lack the proper storytelling.

@SynfulChaot I get that it’s an mmo but I’d like to criticize a couple of your statements.

1. As the “Grand Marshall” of the Pact, Trahearne constantly defers to the player characters judgement. He’s a backseat leader that just takes the credit when things go well and expects you to save him when things dont.

2. I would love to have a statue in DR because I ascended to godhood in NF, not constantly be reminded that I was essentially a sidekick in my own story.

I get it, how can you personalize an mmo? It’s something the mmo industry has been asking since infancy. I’m just sick of gloryhogs that do none of the work.

1. As the “Grand Marshall” of the Pact, Trahearne constantly defers to the player characters judgement. He’s a backseat leader that just takes the credit when things go well and expects you to save him when things dont.

He asks for your advice, just as he relies on his other advisors. A good leader listens to his underlings. I see nothing wrong with this.

2. I would love to have a statue in DR because I ascended to godhood in NF, not constantly be reminded that I was essentially a sidekick in my own story.

If you had become a god, the game would be over. There would be nothing left for you to do.

Also, please do remember that it was the other gods that decided to give the gift to Kormir. She didn’t ask for it. They forced it onto her.

I get it, how can you personalize an mmo? It’s something the mmo industry has been asking since infancy. I’m just sick of gloryhogs that do none of the work.

Neither Trahearne nor Kormir are gloryhogs. They didn’t ask for the positions they were given. The gods forced the gift upon Kormir. Us, the players, were the ones that recommended Trahearne to be the Marshal. Neither are/were vainglorious. Both were humble in their taking of the mantles.

Yes, Kormir didn’t do much once she was blinded. But Trahearne was active the entire time working.

So how were they useless gloryhogs again?

This argument again? Really?

Why can’t people understand that as players, we do not want what they’re getting!. If we were the ones that attained godhood, the game would be over. Nothing more to do. If we were the ones that led the Pact, the chara would be so busy leading we’d get to do nothing. If we were the ones that were being pushed for Captain’s Council, we’d be embroiled in internal politics and stuff and not get to have fun.

We don’t want that stuff. We want to play the game. Those charas are made to take those roles as, as a player, those rewards are not rewards at all.

That doesn’t the main character we’re helping has to be useless and continuously worsen the situation. You know what an easy solution would have been? Make them a decent, powerful character that actually does something.

I’ve not seen any of these NPCs be entirely useless and making things worse. Remember that not all they do you see. And if you pay attention to the storylines, they have been busy behind the scenes while we’re out being heroes. Busy doing important stuff.

Well, except Kormir. But she’s a bit on the blind side. Not much she could do. And her godhood was decided upon by the other gods, so I figure they knew what the heck they were doing.

^My statement was directly almost completely at Kormir, and partially at Rurik (stop rushing into battle!).
Even if they do things on the side (except for Korimir again, who was busy being blind and trapped in the relm of torment) That doesn’t give them an excuse for taking the credit for player accomplishments when all they do is tag along and do nothing while the players fight. I guess in that respect Kiel is better than Kormir, at least Kiel hits things.

As for the gods knowing what they’re doing, lol XD Abaddon was a god, he messed up big time giving out magic and and turning on them. Balthazar said it would be a breeze to take out the other non human races, completely wrong (lore wise, he’s wrong quite often). Grenth nearly lost the underworld and let Dhuum escape again, repeatedly. So they mess up, pick randomly, and have no idea what they’re doing quite often.

Yes, the suicide prince was useless and bad. Absolutely no argument there.

But your argument fails on Kormir. She doesn’t take credit for your chara’s accomplishment. She takes Abbadon’s power as she was the only one gifted, by the other gods no less, with the ability to contain the power

Abbadon didn’t see it as messing up. He simply gave out the power as he felt. And turned on the other gods when they took his gift back. I don’t recall Balthazar saying it would be a breeze, but he did urge Humans to attack non-Humans. Note that both Dwayna and Melandru urged against such a course of action. As for Grenth and the underworld? Just a constant battle. Note that Dhuum never makes it out. Just as Menzies is never successful against Balthazar.

I like the fact that they are gods that have failings just as Humans do. But who are we do doubt or contradict these beings. If they say jump, we kittening jump. They gave that power to Kormir. I’m not gonna argue with that.

I’m not saying Kormir took credit because she took the power. I wouldn’t want to be stuck in that realm, would you? I say because if you look at all the lore, it says that Kormir is the one who defeated abaddon, with help. When she actually did nothing but release him in the first place, and absorb his power when he died.
Balthazar part was from gw2 lore, it’s in an orrian history scroll in game at a pact camp.
Abaddon’s mistake was in giving out to much as he gave magic. While he didn’t make a mistake in his own eyes, it does show that the gods’s actions aren’t necessarily what is best for the people.
For Grenth, yeah, he didn’t really make any mistakes. It just shows that Grenth doesn’t know how to contain Dhuum and he does make it out, many times, that’s why the players get to fight him. He’d be in a very bad spot if it weren’t for all the random heroes :p

And once again, it’s not about Kormir getting the power, it’s about her not doing anything useful.

We don’t know if she’s been doing anything useful since the events of GW1 as the gods went strangely silent. I’m pretty sure she has been, though.

I hear Kiel isn’t even a human, I hear she’s a norn- and her parents are sons of svanir at that. Until I see the birth certificate, I advise everyone against voting for this socialist dragon worshipper.

Yes, I agree. Anet is kitten at storytelling and conveyance. That said Kiel is at least an active participant while the charr just sits in LA selling RNG chests to morons and stupids.

You have gotten what you paid for, all that remains is biweekly gemshop pushing.

And it’s rather silly to have a million gods, a million Pact Marshals, a million Captain’s Council members… As a single player game, that’d work. But as an MMO? Nope.

All hail Konig Deathrazor, the 1839475th Human God of Knowledge!

Dear ANet writers,
Stop treating GW2 as a single story. Each Season and expansion should be their own story.

I like Trahearne better. He sounds WAY humbler than Kiel and he seems more dependent on the player. I don’t know, it just feels that I’m actually important when I talk to him, but it simply doesn’t when I talk to Kiel.
I’m not saying that I want Trahearne back, I’m just saying that I would rather have him than Kiel. However, I would rather have good character (like Tybalt) than either of them, of course.

Useless in game. As in in all the missions the closest thing she does to being helpful is use “Incoming!” on your allies near the beginning. Yet still gets the credit for your missions in lore.

She attained godhood as the gods graced her with the gift to contain Abbadon’s power. Not us.

And last I checked, she did not take sole credit for the defeat of Abbadon. She played a role, but it is not claimed that she did it alone. Nor is she portrayed as stopping Nightfall herself.

Yes, she is useless in-game. 95% or more of NPCs are as NPC AI in all games is kittening bad.
