Besides all the election fuss, I am wondering about Kiel’s motives running for Council. She is a smart, dedicated, recourceful and proud high-ranking member of the Lionguard. Her report about the Aetherblades was a fantastic read, the best storytelling up to date in GW2, inho.

Why on Earth does such a talented investigator want to jump into the political quagmire and get herself entangled with amoral, reckless egomaniacs?

That’s the thing, Kiel doesn’t really have any motivations to join the Council. Magnus pretty much told her to and served the position up to her on a silver platter. It’s my opinion that she’ll be little more than a puppet for Magnus if she actually wins. I would much rather Evon take the seat since he would have a greater degree of autonomy than Ellen does, and it would balance the council’s racial profile a bit better. Currently the council is made up of three Humans, two Asura, one Norn and one Charr.

It should be made up of humans. Lion’s arch is in human territory.

As said above, if it’s anyone’s motives we should be questioning, it’s Magnus’. He is putting up one of his own supporters for Council. Which almost guarantees him two votes in meetings. A very big power play, on his part, in my opinion. Whether or not that’s true, on the other hand, is up to Kiel. He’s has always been her boss, and we haven’t seen anything of their relationship if they are on an equal footing.

If Kiel does win the election, I wouldn’t mind seeing a future LS about Magnus trying to overthrow the Captain’s Council, to make him something of the “Pirate King”. Maybe if we kill him, Evon can take his spot on the Council, and Kiel takes over the Lionguard.

Win-Win.

Like others have said, it is a power play by Magnus. The council are pirates and they will try to get their way. Magnus is playing it smart.

I think Kiel is part of doing it for Magnus but I think the motivations are much more simple than many people think. From the Short Story about Ellen, it suggests that they may be closer than just commander and officer. Magnus may see Ellen in a.. maybe no child role but neice maybe. Putting her name forward may be his way of trying to help her in life. Likewise Ellen may be trying to make Magnus proud.

Id love to find out more about their relationship. We do know that Ellen is an orphan, was saved by Magnus as a child and that they have known each other for a long time.

As for weither Kiel is Magnus’s pocket, I suspect its hard to say at this point. Ellen has a strong sense of conviction. It might be interesting if something causes them to disagree and end up going against each other.

Also if people want to argue that Kiel is a puppet of Magnus, then people should also remember that Evon set up the BLT company working for the Ash Legion. Evon could quite possibly still serve the Ash Legion which would put Lion’s Arch political power in the hands of another national group.

The theory about Magnus’ powerplay (using her for securing a majority in the council) sounds very convincing, indeed. ^^ Of course, could be that Ellen sees through it all (she is a smart kitten if ever there was one) and might get into big trouble with him … which would make her role alot more exciting that I thought from the beginning. ^^
