Kiel vs Evon ~ We all know who wins.
QQ much? I have seen way more Evon support than Keil.
I see just as much growing support for Kiel in my LA and on Reddit as I did right way for Gnash. Just wait till more people get into over those of us who are just on early and the Kiel support will only swell.
It could be either one. Evon is getting a large amount of support due to nostalgia on his fractal. Kiel is getting support due to her being human, a known NPC from three previous Living World arcs, and waypoints (her fractal should be getting some, but many people don’t think the Thaumanova fractal would be much different than is in game now, so it’s not as big a deal).
Plus it’s the charr vs human animosity all over again.
It could go either way, honestly.

I dont understand this complaint, lets recap. All playable races are represented throughout the storymode Dungeons. No one gets left out really. Lets move on.
Flame and Frost and the Razing. Basicly centered around the story of a Norn (Braham) and the Charr Rox. To the point their gear was specially on the gemstore.
Then we had Trehearne basicly the big commander and chief behind the whole fighting Zaitan and invading Orr thing in the Personal Story.
Then we had an Asura run and maintain the super adventure box. Wintersday was run by Trixx, also an Asura. And the Fractals, also an Asura.
Infact i cannot recall all that many Humans actually taking the spotlight. Marjory comes to mind, but that was a minor side-roll next to Kiel.
So, any accusations that all the big roles are being taken by Human characters is wildly exegerated, and simply not true. Infact i’d say the opposite is true.
@ Terrahero ~ I will clarify the first point for you Terra. While all races might be quote represented in all the story we are focusing in on just these two characters at this time. Now out of these two only one has been here for months assisting players against things such as the Karka. That npc Kiel has been shown in a positive light and is known to a great many players. While Gnashblade hasn’t been here at all and his first showing cast him in a somewhat negative light. That he was trying to underhandedly get the trade agreement under Kiel’s nose.
Now as for others in other stories such as Rox the Charr in Flame and Frost. One has to consider what she was made for and it wasn’t Charr players who already loved playing Charr and thought Charr designed were amazing. Rox was instead designed with bringing people not interested in Charr around to at least looking at their lore and maybe wanting to play one. So her whole design aside from required aesthetics really doesn’t feel teenage warband trained for battle Charr but instead pleasant on the eyes bring in new demographic corny positive story cutesy eyed anime Charr.
So you could argue in some cases some of these other races was more Akin to the Blood Elves in WoW when the first hit. It was to get Alliance to roll Horde. Not to excite Horde who were already Horde.
Either way the first bit was a point about who was known and the simple fact is a majority of all -MMORPG’s- humans are the most played race and actual studies show humans have issues with empathy of those farther away from what they are and you have to impose human traits to get it back. Kiel on both fronts has a massive advantage just from those.
@Vahkris ~ I do not feel that way based on previous experiences from other games where players were given choices between two things like this in different ways. Past experiences in these games has shown people favor humans.
Even you when trying to advocate to me how both sides have a chance you highlight more reasons even unknowningly of why I should vote Kiel. One of the largest you noted even if it only lasts a few months which in elections like these people often jump in without reading everything. The waypoints being cheaper even for a limited time will push a great many at a glance to vote for her even tossing out the human factor.
Sorry I disagree entirely. I am voting for Kiel because cheaper waypoints are much more valuable than cheaper black lion keys. The chests rarely ever give you anything good and in my personal opinion are a waste of money.

Though I do find it interesting that about the time I’ll get 400 free gems as an Achievement award, Gnashblade promises to cut prices…
I agree with KorKor. It is apparent from the Strangers from the Sky cutscene and the recently released I like Evon video that he was made out to be a villain. Granted, there are players who will vote for a candidate based on what they have promised should they win the election but there are also players who are indifferent to either one and would vote out of their ‘conscience’ for the good guys.
I hope Anet would throw in a ‘twist’ whereby the candidate with lower support halfway through the election period would ‘buy’ support through temporary buffs or even gold(!).
> voting for temporary economic benefit
> not for fractal or story
You’re doing it wrong.
Maybe it’s me but I’d probably vote for Kiel cause she’s human, (Ascalon, never forget!), and because she’s offering DISCOUNTED WAYPOINTS for 4 weeks. Screw cheaper black lion keys, I’d rather have the cheaper waypoints.
Also, Thaumanova Reactor…. I wanna see that go boom.
This is great and all but I think in the end Anet will give us both fracts anyways.

Oh wow. So Sky Pirates and Dragon Bash revolved around Kiel (female human), Marjory (female human), Mai Trinn (female human – sensing a trend here?) and had secondary characters of Magnus (male norn), Logan (male human) and Kasmeer (female human). There is a clear bias in the recent story towards humans (and females for that matter) which is very ironic considering the story revolved around Lion’s Arch – the multicultural capital of Tyria.
Since the Living Story started Kiel has been the most frequent protagonist with Rox and Braham sharing the spot light for one release. Living Story so far has been very bias towards female humans.
I’d say Kiel has the advantage here. Cheaper WPs has mass appeal despite how little it may actual mean for players. The fractals may be too intangible to have voting pull (players won’t see them until the end of the year whereas cheaper WPs will arrive right away). There is also a huge bias towards human females in the GW2 audience. It’s also convenient for Kiel that she was the primary antagonist for the last three or four Living Story arcs. Evon was never seen before (and yeah, his first appearance is a cartoon villain one) whereas Kiel has been around for a long time, regardless of how dubious her presence has been, presence is a presence. Sometimes knowing a candidates name is enough and people might not know Evon but most people will know who Kiel is.
The path of least resistance favour Kiel to win this election.
Kiel sucks. She’s by far the less interesting of the two as a character, and the rewards for electing her are worse as well. The rewards thing is somewhat subjective, but as a character, you have to admit she’s spectacularly dull.
Also, if anyone really favors humans, they’d vote Gnashblade. That means getting the Human fractal, rather than the boring Asura one.
(edited by Grimwolf.7163)
I’m voting Evon because he’s portrayed as this mischievous, ’’evil’’ Charr who just plays good to get what he wants.
I’ve seen Kiel in all these Living Stories and she just seems to be this regular hero of justice and happy quaggan candy yum yum with some countrside girl attitude, it’s not interesting to me at all.
I know barely anything about Evon, and that makes me interested in how ArenaNet will build his character in this Living Story and upcoming ones.
I don’t care much about the promises at all, but I take the Abaddon Fractal over any waypoint reduce cost for some weeks.

@Tenclub ~ You prove one of the points I was making. Even though the waypoints and keys are a very temporary thing. It has you sold without a care in the world really about the other things offered.
@Ykfox ~ You as well prove my point caring about a temporary waypoint first and then everything else second even if you care at all. There was never any competition on that front of this debate with most people and anyone looking at it objectively in Anet surely could see that. Ya, nudge the other point I made about caring more for 100% new content over older even if it covers an older story point more for new players to GW. The reactor is unknown except for the boom. While we have all the written accounts and more of what happened to the old god for quite some time now.
@Swiftpaw ~ It is possible considering they’d have to do some work on both in advance to be able to deliver them quickly after the election depending on who wins. However it will still take some time for them to finish it and put it in but it is also more likely they’d wait till it was no longer fresh on peoples minds so it seems like a treat later rather then something you should just get.
It also kinda brings to mind that the election is rigged from the get go so they only have to make one right away anyways. Yet, they will nudge the votes (gerrymandering ~lawl?) to make it look by design as if our votes actually matter on the content. Paranoid to say that but looking at the other things noted and the waypoint bit. It is kinda obvious who is being pushed to win as a known outcome. Course you could also argue that is null and void since the fractal won’t arrive either way till later in the year but the thought is there.
Just seems like one would know in advance the human ~female~ would win even barring this. As Shiren said the player base and story in general is already very biased to human females. Often for the same wrong reasons as people who like to hear a female automated voice over a male one and more.
@Farzo ~ Thing is the generic human hero has been winning the MMORPG for over a decade now. Not to mention that players often for the wrong reasons have a large affinity for female characters/models. This election is so biased it is almost puke worthy. =/
You are not the majority when it comes to these types of games. Most people do not really truly care about intrigue. They might say they do but at best only if it also caters to what they already desire. The average none vocal player in this game will vote Kiel because she is female, human, and the waypoints. The rest of it really doesn’t mean much in the grande scheme them.

That.
I think Kiel will win. I don’t expect even half of players to actually go to the website and read about the “Fall of Abbadon” fractal, or to understand how the reduced waypoint cost is only temporary. And I agree with the OP, in that humans are favoured over non human characters, plus Kiel is likely seen as a “girl”, and charrs were mentioned as the least popular race in the game.
Still, I’ll vote for Evon, and I know it’s not going to be simply a matter of “one player = one vote”. Maybe, just maybe, Evon could actually have a chance.

That would be interesting to see at the end. A breakdown of all the votes, not just which side had the most votes, but which side had the most repeated votes from the same people. It would be funny (and fitting) to see Kiel get the most unique votes, but Evon win because his supporters all voted far more often.
I think you’re right about the bias going in. The appeal of Abaddon relies on people reading the website. It’s easier to vote for the character they know and is also the human female.
I have at least one character of each race. While I do spend more time on my human thief, that will change once I have 100% map completion. I plan on voting for Evon even though I’d benefit more from reduced waypoint prices.
I’m a classic GW1 player, I hate the Charr and I hate rng chests, and reducing the price of bl keys for 4 weeks appeals to me in no way whatsoever. Therefore I will be voting Evon.
Keil is boring, her frac will be boring, and if it was perma wp reduction I’d be all for it but choosing a boring npc that will play a big role in the game (presumably) for a months worth of wp reduction isnt worth it. And besides, I dont see any Charr on the captains council, time for that to change. I may hate Charr but I hate boring more.
@Akechi ~ It is always the vocal who like intrigue, story, and will vote for something outside the box even if it disagrees with them.
Sadly the masses in the game see Kiel more and with the WP reduction costs it is a sealed deal.
voting for kiel is difficult when you played the original guild wars
While I want Evon to win, and actually think he likely will, I think ANet really may have been, for whatever reason, encouraging Kiel as the winner.
She’s been the main character in the past few Living Story events, and Evon came completely out of nowhere.
Too bad for ANet they aren’t great at writing important NPCs, and players often end up hating their guts (Kormir, Trahearne, Logan, Varesh etc).

I think it is that people all want to be the giant hero and get all the rewards with none of the responsibilities those positions would entail.
That and Kiel’s permanent offering pales in comparison to Evon’s.
Main: Caeimhe – Sylvari Ranger
Alts: Charr Guardian, Asura Elementalist, Human Thief, Norn Necromancer

idk, there have been a number of well done characters. The Vizier(became the lich), Shiro and a lot of people from factions honestly, and Palawa Joko, and even then Kormir really wasn’t that bad, and yeah everyone knows of Kormir becoming the god, even if she hadn’t, tales of success in Elona wouldn’t have gone very far as Palawa Joko rules it with an iron fist. I liked Kiel, I thought she was very important to the plot lines, but I think I’m more curious about the fall of Abaddon and the temporary contents don’t mean much to me. That and I hope Abaddon uses his concept art form instead
As long as they put the tallied vote results up at the end I’ll be happy. Must be showing my mmorpg age when I laugh to myself at those voting for Evon simply to fight Abaddon though. What’s wrong kiddies? Never killed a god before? :P
(edited by Joseph Skyrim.2470)
@Joseph ~ We still have no way of knowing if those were the actual votes. Oh.. and you killed a weakened god cast out by the others trapped in another realm. You then let Kormir take that power from those more deserving in the party and yourself after doing nothing at all to aid you other then just being there.
I’d much rather see him in modern HD glory at full power. Shame he won’t escape time to kill Kormir though.
We all know Anet wants Kiel to win. Their content is pre-scripted for her to win no doubt.
Aside from really wanting an Abbadon fractal… Am I the only one who wants Evon to win because I think it would just be more interesting? Sure, RP wise my character would vote for Kiel… But that just seems too easy.
You think Kiel is bubbly? Lol…
on most forums I visit Evon seems to be the favorite
People like to forget that Kiel blew up one of the Lionguard’s ships because it was the quickest and easiest way to follow her orders and deal with the Consortium’s troublemaking (that and she was pretty frustrated and kitten ed off at them).
Evon would never be willing to do that, it’d be too much of a loss in profit. :P
I’m still certain the Kiel will win, but I’d vote for Evon just to spite her. I don’t expect Evon to turn out to be an interesting character, though. Anet is good at a lot of things, gameplay, atmosphere, world lore, etc., but they come short on story and character…with a few exceptions.
The way i see it:
Kiel
Pros
War Hero
No nonsense achiever
Ally of Magnus – Would greatly facilitate urgent policies and important decisions that the Captain’s Council would have to make
Friendship with Kasmeer Meade & Majory Delaqua
Reduced Waypoint Costs
Development of Thaumanova Fractal
Cons
Politically naive
Little economical influence
No development of Fall of Abbadon Fractal
Evon
Pros
Well established supporter of the PCs
Economically vary powerful
Reduced cost of black lion keys (disputable con)
Development of fall of Abbadon fractal – Extremely significant part of GW2 history and lore
Cons
Also well established supporter of RNG
The in game representation/manifestation of ANet’s Greed (Remember the last time a RNG box has screwed you over? – disputable)
Lacks political ties with any protagonist-type character
Reduced cost of black lion keys (disputable pro)
This list is slightly biased, but it should give you a pretty good idea of who i’m voting for.
It was stated that work hasn’t yet begun on either fractal which means the winning instance is going to be months in coming anyway. Whether or not ANet has a secret agenda as far as vote tipping is ridiculous but not unheard of.
voting Kiel because she’s a cutie

Individual staff members probably have their own interests, anyway. We’re bound to get more information on these two characters during this release anyway, so it’s not like the decision can’t be swayed.

Played GW Prophecies, Factions, Nightfall, EoTN and I’ll still vote for her.

nope it isn’t
(Yeah sure I would gladly kick abaddons kitten once again but I’ll vote rp-likely)
too all “charr-lovers” that are voting for Evon – guys he is GLADIUM and by that If You are aknowledged with charr lore would mean that no self-respecting charr (all PC’s are members of the legion and have their warbands) would vot for him because of that simple fact.
gladium that doesn’t even try to find new warband is most hated in charr legions

Well personally those 4 weeks would help me a lot. I have just gotten to level 80 and don’t have that much gold so every bit I can save helps.
The only other difference is the fractals and tbh it doesn’t matter to me which gets chosen =)
Lastly Kiel to me is a better choice just for who she is if we go by a RP standpoint. She’s someone that has worked with my character and that my character knows/trusts. While Evon is a trader who I first met when he was sneakily standing behind me eavesdropping on a conversation.
So if we go by candidates that is how I feel. If it was the Charr that was in Kiels shoes I would pick him. It’s not a matter of human vs charr to me.
Hope that clarifies some!

The in game representation/manifestation of ANet’s Greed (Remember the last time a RNG box has screwed you over? – disputable)
Actually TNBC (Tyrian National Broadcasting Company) did a recent expose’ in which they discovered that Ellen Keil used her influence with a high ranking politicial in Divinity’s Reach to get lock boxes added to the gem store. Because these boxes can contain revive orbs, rejuvenation boosters, and repair canisters, they are considered part of the supplemental medical program and now Evon is legally required to continue offering these keys for the lock boxes.
Hey, it was on the news so it HAS to be true!

I’m pretty sure Anet expects Kiel to win and this is exactly the reason. This is why the whole election thing is “rigged” (not quite rigged, but HEAVILY biased towards Kiel).
Kiel’s name has been out in the game for much longer than Evon: that’s probably enough to give her the win already (name recognition is a big deal — it’s why real life politicians always say “my opponent” instead of actually saying their opponent’s name).
The only way I see Evon winning is if it’s not 1 person 1 vote (do we know yet?) and the Evon followers are much more dedicated to getting him to win (which seems to be the case).

I don’t think it’s reasonable to bring this one down to in-game realities – none of that matters to the people who vote. Having said that I think it’s incredibly naive to say that the head of arguably the largest trading company in Tyria lacks political ties. Trade is a cornerstone of diplomacy, if Tyria were a real world, Evon would be one of the most well connected people in the entire area. It’s surprising that he’s not already on the Captain’s Council.
I also don’t think the RNG tag has anything to do with it. The hatred (I specifically choose that word) or RNG is well documented on these forums. Every content patch comes out with thread after thread of RNG hatred. Even the revelation of the new weapon skins being RNG gated has resulted in a thread before the content even released. I doubt anyone at ArenaNet is naive enough to think that people voting for Evon are voting to support the RNG. The metrics to support or discredit RNG would be firmly rooted in the players spending gems in the store to buy the chests. ArenaNet doesn’t need to use obscure and misleading information from election results, they can check their own hard data on the RNG chests. The RNG argument is just a Kiel supporter attempt at taking down the competition (it started out as in-character bashing but I’m beginning to think some people believe it now).
It’s not clear who will win, but to me it seems clear that Evon will only win if the majority of votes come from people who are informed on a) the limited value of WP cost reductions and b) the difference in fractals. If players don’t read the website and don’t calculate how little money they will save on WP reductions, it’s hard to see how a human female who was is familiar to the player could lose to a new character from the least popular race with almost no in-game development (it was mistake to hold an election at the same time as introducing Evon, he should have been around for a while to make it fairer). The primary appeal of Evon lies beneath the surface, will the average player look that far? Let’s remember forum posters are a tiny portion of the community.
I don’t care who you vote for, but if you’re voting for Kiel only because of waypoint reduction for a pitiful 4 weeks and no other reason, you’re doing it totally wrong and you should be ashamed.

At least those people would have a single reason to. I know tons of people who are going to vote for her just because she’s human.

1. I know about temporary cost reductions. I know about fractal difference.
And I’ll still voting on Kiel
2. Evon Isn’t Introduced now. Actually he is in game from the beginnnig. You were able to talk with him in Black Lion HQ a long before or that “living story” began. and also most of main page news about things in gem storye is “Evon gnashblade about new items in the gem store”
“-and on this occasion I keep mine plate armors”
discussion about offensive/deffensive playstyles
I saw this on the main GW2 page and typed up this reply. Can’t help but say to everyone. I told you so and I wish I’d bet on it. I’d be rich if I did because it was so predictable.
I knew this would be the outcome and even posted so on the forums before the election even began. Anet is putting a well established character in the lore against a character that just hit the market and on top of that they’ve given people a larger incentive to vote for Kiel over Gnashblade in the early part by not making both sides equal.
They know people will vote often without looking into the deeper issues just like real life. They will go with the known and flash in the pan stuff like the waypoints every time. So by putting black lion keys a know HATED item against a well loved item waypoints more or less made the election rigged from the start combined with the other factors. Then there is the whole race factor as people in games tend to ALWAYS vote human even if the character is BORING because they are by and by xenophobic. So they can only truly relate to something that looks the same in the mirror on a personal level.
The truth is though Kiel is an extremely boring character. All her dialogue is very very generic hero and all her actions are the same way. There is no deeper personality there you know everything she will say and do before she does it. Even her animations as a captain of a military unit are bubbly such as using the default human female cheer and laugh. It makes her look even less interesting if that was even possible and childish. Not to mention she is human and
Gnashblade isn’t evil and is a businessmen. He has a fresh snarky quality about him and is even willing to insult his opposition in creative ways such as the mouse fart comment. It would be a Charr on a council for a city that is supposed to be a mix of every race but yet some how even the council is majority human which makes even less sense. We’d get a fresh look on mmorph story that we often do not get and even get a naval battle with Abbadon in a fractal!
A vote for Gnashblade is a vote for a fresh new creative and fun take on the living story and future personal story maybe. Haven’t we all had enough of generic hero’s in these games? Have we not had enough Traehernes that always do the boring right thing in the most boring way possible? Where is your sense of adventure people and desire for new things?!
“Sigh” Well the election was decided before it even began and even more so now. Gnashblade would have to makeup 5% of that vote just to tie and another 1% to pass for victory and lets face it. Unless something like the Goons take an active roll as they are amazing at changing the tide of things. This election is already over and the overall living story just got even more boring.
If Evon will loose it does not mean he will vanish. He may still be around in the living story and pull some strings. Different people have different reasons to vote for their candidates. I always try to ask myself “what my character would do?”. Sort of like RP. And in this regard voting for Evon wouldnt make any sense. So yeah, I vote for Kiel even though I agree that Evon might be more interesting. But the integrrity of my in-game character is more important for me.
a person’s perception of who is going to win is based on 2 things: 1 is who you support and 2 is are you an optimist or a pessamist?
i am an optimist and an evon supporter so i see more evon support in game
i assume you are an evon supporter and a pessamist so you see more kiel supporters
always remember perception and expectation make up 95% of what we humans call reality
